DIY Woven Faux Hawk | Edgy Hairstyles

This week’s hairstyle is a mashup inspired by a style created for Bailey during one of her photo shoots a few months back. The hair stylist was Charise Miller, a friend of mine from Utah, who I love to watch work her magic.

Blending the look of a fishtail, with what I had already learned using a simple French Braid for the style from Charise, we mashed things up to get this beautiful hairstyle!

This faux braid is so easy, anyone can follow, and it only involves crossing a strand and then dropping the previous crossed strands. Easy as that!

This hairstyle looks perfect with a pair of ripped jeans and a cute blouse or t-shirt. Feel free to accessorize it as you wish, and add curls. You can see that I also added a cute red bow to help cover the elastic.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Video Tutorial:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Optional: Begin with a base of curls…
  2. Then comb the hair away from the face, towards the back of the head…
  3. Now, pick up a small section of hair right at the middle forehead, and divide it into two equal sections…
  4. Then cross these two strands {at this point you’ll have one piece that lays on top of the other}…
  5. Now to the other side, pick up another small strand about 1.5 to 2 inches from center, and cross it over the top {this will begin to form a criss-cross woven pattern}…
  6. Then, on the other side, pick up a new strand of hair about 1.5 to 2 inches from center and cross it over the top {as you cross, you should be able to release both other strands, except the new strand you just crossed over the top…
  7. With each new strand, try to pick up hair in front of the last piece you just played down {however, farther back into the braid, you’ll notice that you have to pick up hair a second time and that’s perfectly fine}…
  8. Continue Steps #5-6, keeping the braid directly down the middle of your head, and also ensuring that the faux hawk maintains a width of about 3-4 inches…
  9. Continue the braid down the back of the head about 4 inches past the crown, and then tie it off with an elastic…
  10. Add a hair bow for an added pop, and hairspray {if desired}.

  1. Thanks for the great videos Mindy!!! If you could do a video on how to use hair combs, that would be awesome. Mine are big and heavy, and don’t work with the normal comb ideas. Just a thought. Thanks again, keep up the great work. Also what kinds of shampoo do your girls use? It seems to work really well.
