Double French Braid and Twist | Braid Hairstyles

Over the past few months, we have received so many requests for hairstyles that it is hard to accommodate all of them. We wish we had time to do all of them, but with six children who are my highest priority… it is difficult to find spare time.

What we do find, however, is that there may be a reoccurring theme among the hairstyle requests…

We have had quite few Facebook posts or emails asking for hairstyles from The Game of Thrones TV series on HBO. We do not watch HBO, but many fans have sent in photos and I have to admit some of the hairstyles are super cute!

{Note to readers: This is not a show that we will watch in our home, simply because we do not agree with its content. We also would not advise anyone under the age of 18 to view it either, since it apparently contains mature content and themes.}

From an emailed photo of a hairstyle worn by the character named Sansa, here is what we are calling this the ”Double French Braid & Twist”…

Steps:

To begin, center-part the hair and then section off about a 1.5 inch strip on either side of the part. {These sections will provide the hair for the two French backs.}
Then French Braid the right section until you reach as far back as the crown of the head, then finish of the hair with a simple braid {tying it off loosely with an elastic band}…
Repeat step #2 on the left section of the hair…
Then take the braids and twist them around each other, tying them off together with an hair elastic.
Add hairspray {if desired}.

We added volume to the hair with a curling wand beforehand, simply to add more texture to the hairstyle. It was only on the top layer of the hair, with the underlying hair “as is”.

This would be a perfect 2nd-day hairstyle if you had braids or curls in your hair from the previous day. It is so simple to do, as long as you know how to French Braid, and will certainly have people asking you how you did it!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, two elastic bands, hairspray, and curling iron {if desired, for texture}

I have been trying to convince my husband to apply with me ever since season #1… but he finally gave in and decided to do it this year! Simple Messy Braid | Braided Hairstyles

If you are like me, you’ve noticed that everyone in Hollywood {in TV, movies, etc.} is talking about the comeback of braid hairstyles.

Simply flip through magazines, catalogs, or beauty websites and see them there, too! Everyone is wearing braids and the best thing is that there are a million ways to wear them!

One of my very favorite braided hairstyles uses a small, added flair to a simple braid… what everyone is calling a Simple Messy Braid. This is the perfect second-day hairstyle {after curls the day prior} for a quick rush out the door.

I’ve received so many emails requesting a video for this hairstyle. One of our most loyal fans even asked 10+ friends to all email me within a few hours each asking for this style! I swear we have the best fans! Well, it definitely got my attention and my girls and I decided to make this our next tutorial.

Items Needed: Brush, comb, ponytail holder, hairspray {if desired}

Time Required: 2 minutes

Steps:

Begin with dry slightly messy or curly hair. {You can use a flat iron or wand to add a little curl to the top layer if needed}.
Pull all hair loosely to one side, over your shoulder.
Braid the hair using the regular braiding method.
Tug on the “elbows” of the braid to loosen/flatten and soften the braid. This is called “pancaking” the braid.
Curl any loose pieces of hair to frame your face. Remember, the braid is supposed to be messy!
Bobby pin any problem strands into place, and you are good to go!

Chalk Highlights | Teen Hairstyles

Aside from feather extensions, I am starting to see quite a trend towards color highlights in girls hairstyles. I am not a fan of permanent color in my girls’ hair, for obvious age reasons, but also because it can be damaging and a big commitment to that color.

My girls are coming home stating that many girls in their classes are using highlighters or Sharpies to color strands of hair {I about died hearing this}! That certainly cannot be good for the hair, even if they believe it washes out!

Just a few weeks ago, a Facebook fan commented that she thought we had used chalk highlights on a hairstyle we posted for our #3 daughter. We didn’t… however, intrigued, we looked into what it would take to use chalk as highlights and this tutorial is the end result.

What is great about these highlights is that they are fairly easy to apply, are non-toxic, last for one day and then easy to wash out. I bought our chalk pastels at Michael’s {with a 50% off coupon}, but you may buy similar pastels on Amazon. I, personally, would not use oil pastels as they will be messier and much harder to wash out.

I had my daughter’s hair in a soft braid the day before, to help add some body to the hair, so this is perfect 2nd day hairstyle! Be sure your daughter is wearing a shirt that you do not mind getting a little dirty {or use a plastic cape or towel over the shoulders}. You can create these highlights with minimal mess, if you are very careful.

Next, I take a bright colored pastel chalk and gently wet it with either the spray bottle or faucet. I then take a small strand of hair and, by gently rubbing the wet chalk in a downward motion. I color the bottom 4-5 inches of the strand. {Do not rub the chalk up and down the strand as this will ruin the hair.} I do the same on another 2 strands or so, and then switch to another color, and vary the colored segment lengths a bit.

After I have colored the desired strands, you can {if you wish} gently brush through the strand once with a brush, and then take a curling iron or wand and help set the chalk by curling the highlights. This also allows for the strands to fall beautifully within the rest of the hair. You may also choose to spritz the strand with hairspray to help the chalk highlights stay in longer.

Chalk highlights can work with many different colors of hair, including dark. Obviously, the darker vibrant colors show better on blonde hair with the lighter vibrant colors showing better on dark hair. You can use any number of colors, and it can be fun to experiment!

Fans on YouTube are going nuts over this hairstyle, because it is so easy to do and easy to wash out. As this is a chalk application, when you wash the hair… be sure to use a good conditioner. Chalk has a tendency to remove oils, so it is important to keep the hair conditioned.

This hairstyle tip is perfect for holiday hairstyles, school spirit day, cheerleaders, crazy hair day, or for use in many of our hairstyle combinations. It is a way to have a little color, which is becoming popular, without the committment! Enjoy!
