Pancake Braids | Bohemian Hairstyles

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Many of you noticed the cute braids that we included in the photos of the No-Heat Sock Curls Hairstyle tutorial, and asked if we could do a tutorial on it…

Great news, we actually filmed those braids on the sock curls that very day! I think you will admit that these braids are so super easy to do!

Pancake Braid | Bohemian Hairstyles

Now, I know you are going to ask… but my twins started calling this style of braiding “Pancake Braids” since they were little, because the braids are flattened like pancakes. {I thought it was cute… so the name stuck!}

Pancake Braid | Long Hairstyles

In order to flatten a braid, you simply make a normal three-strand braid and then tug on the elbows while holding the end of the braid loosely. Once you like the way the braid looks, you simply tie it off with a clear elastic band.

In this hairstyle, we used two pancake braids, one on either side of the top/front of the hair, and then pinned them up around the back of the head. This is what actually gives the hairstyle a beachy-Bohemian look that is so popular today.

Just imagine the compliments you will receive on this hairstyle with such gorgeous curls {using no heat, of course) and these cute braids as an combo!  I promise you that I will be the first to compliment you!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: 2 clear elastic bands, 2-4 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Katniss’ Diagonal-Dutch Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

From time to time, we like to film super-fun hairstyles that we know that many of our fans will love. Today is one of those days!

My girls and I have read The Hunger Games series, were quickly drawn in to the story lines, and we absolutely love them! With the movie coming out on March 23, 2011, we have received quite a few requests from fans asking us to show some of the styles used in the movie.

Luckily for us, there are trailers and movie posters already available online that give us a tiny glimpse of a few scenes, in anticipation of the movie.

Today we are going to demonstrate Katniss’ Diagonal Dutch Braid hairstyle. {We also want to give a huge thanks to Lindsey, an extremely loyal fan, for emailing us the best shot of the hairstyle in the movie poster below!

Katniss' Braid Hairstyle | Hunger Games

This style uses an exact Dutch Braid starting on the front of the right side of the head and braiding back across the head in a diagonal direction until you can finish off the hair in a simple braid over the left shoulder.  This hairstyle reminds me of a style that Angelina Jolie would wear!

{In the tutorial below, I show you the Katniss style but do not actually go into the details how to do the braiding. If you want to see exactly how to do this, please click our Same-Side Dutch Braid Hairstyle link.}

It is important to note that this braid is intended to look messy, as Katniss was wearing this hairstyle in the arena during the games.

You will also note that I used a few hair extensions to add length to the braid, since my hair is short.  It worked well because my own hair acted as layers, which were perfect as some fell out in the hairstyle… just like in Katniss’ braid!

I know this will be a very popular braid, especially once the movie comes out on March 23, so you can help make this braid a viral sensation by referring it to all your girl friends on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc! That way millions of girls everywhere will wear this hairstyle to the theaters to see the movie! I know for sure that we will!

Please a comment and let me know if you plan to go see the movie, and don’t forget to share!

Big hugs!

Cage Braid Ponytail | 5-Minute Hairstyles

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

This unique braided hairstyle is lesser known, but it is making the rounds on Pinterest from a few wonderful sites.

What I love most about this braid is how easy it is to do, however the finished product looks so complicated {like you spent an hour on it}! If you know how to French Braid, you can do this hairstyle easily with only a small tweak to the stranding!

When you are finished braiding, you simply grab the center part of the braid about 1-2 inches below the ponytail holder. Then, gently pull that part of the braid up over top of the ponytail holder {secure it there} and the whole braid literally “pops” out into a super-cute 3D braid!

After watching the video, you can clearly see why this hairstyle is called a “cage braid” because the style effect looks very much like a ribcage. My girls and I fully plan on using this braid in a Halloween hairstyle using a red-heart bobby pin stuck in the right side of the cage.

It would also make for a fun Christmas party hairstyle because the braid could easily be decorated as a tree! Many fans will likely use it for Crazy Hair Day because it does have a very unique look to it!

Although I know this hairstyle may not be for everyone, I promise you will receive many compliments from people on it, with most wondering how in the world you were able to do it! Our secret is… that it only took 5 minutes! How neat is that???

Enjoy!
