3 Easy Pencil Bun Ideas | Back-to-School Hairstyles

August 10, 2014

It is Back-to-School season, and on some days you will wear your hair down in the most perfect, gorgeous curls. But, later that afternoon, it will get hot in Math class! What can you do to cool down?

Pencil Buns | Back-to-School Hairstyles

Today we will show you how to create each of these three easy Pencil Buns!

All you need is a pencil, and any one of these bun ideas will work perfectly! This can be done on straight or curly hair, with layers, etc, and it will look equally as cute, too! Some choose to use pens to facilitate the hairstyle, and others use chopsticks… it is all up to you!

Pencil Buns | Back-to-School Hairstyles

I prefer to use curls as the base for these buns, simply because the added texture helps the style hold easier. Today I show you how to create them on straight hair, because I wanted you to see that they can be done.

There is nothing new to these styles, as teachers and secretaries have been wearing them for decades. Asian cultures have been tying up hair with in styles like these for centuries longer.

It’s just that when you are in a pinch, and want to tie your hair up, what do you do? It is nice to have a few pencil bun ideas to choose from.

Then, as an added bonus…when you are done with it, simply pull out the bun, whip your head around a bit, and ejoy a few hours of subtle bouncy curls!

Items Needed: One “No. 2″ pencil

Time Requirement: 30 seconds each

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Bun #1- Simple:
Messy Bun

  1. Begin by gathering all hair to the middle back of the head, like you would for a centered ponytail…
  2. Now begin to twist the hair and form it into a bun shape, as you normally would before placing in a hair elastic…
  3. When you run out of hair to twist around, take your pencil and push it into the right side of the bun, at an angle, towards your head…
  4. Then weave the pencil up and down, up and down, through the bun and out the far left side of the bun {this is what secures the bun in place, much like setting a safety pin}…
  5. Tuck in any loose ends, and you are done!

Bun #2 – Inverted:
Messy Bun

  1. Begin by gathering all the hair to the nape of the neck, like you would a low ponytail…
  2. Place the pencil on the left side of the ponytail…
  3. Wrap the hair over the pencil once {or twice, depending on the length of hair}…
  4. Now, twist the pencil upward until the point is pointing straight up…
  5. Then lift the end of the pencil upward which will force the point downward through the hair between the bun and head {be very careful not to scratch your scalp in this process}…
  6. As the bun is set, be sure the pencil doesn’t pop out in the hair beneath the bun…
  7. Tuck in any loose ends, and you are done!

Bun #3:
Messy Bun

  1. Begin by gathering hair to the middle back of head, like you would in a centered ponytail…
  2. Twist and let it wrap around itself into a bun…
  3. Stick the pencil up through the bottom of the bun, and force it all the way through the bun, in an upward motion…
  4. When the pencil reaches the top of the bun lift up the back of the pencil, which will force  the point downward against your scalp…
  5. Push the pencil all the way down until it nearly comes out the bottom beneath the bun…
  6. Tuck in any loose ends, and you are done!

Happy Hairstyling!

With school coming in just a few weeks, BrooklynAndBailey needed to go school shopping. I agreed that if they could pay for half the clothes, we would pay the other half! They have been working like crazy, babysitting and house sitting for neighbors, and the video below is the end result of their back-to-school shopping! {Several of the items are now sold out!}

Pancaked Bun of Braids | Updo Hairstyles

July 20, 2014

Based upon the number of views, we can tell you’ve all loved our Rope Twisted Bun from a few months back! As lovely as that hairstyle is, it can take awhile to create.

Bun of Braids

So, this week, Kamri and I thought it would be fun to show you another of our adorable textured bun hairstyles, that uses some of the same techniques, only much faster to complete!

Bun of Braids

This style is called the Pancaked Bun of Braids! The updo uses a bun maker/donut over a ponytail, and is exactly what the name states… a bun full of pancaked braids! {If you do not have a bun maker, you can make one simply by cutting the toe off of a long sock, and then rolling up the sock.}

There are a few tricks to getting this bun just right, and in this tutorial {particularly the video} I will show you several tips on how to do this.

Prom Hairstyles Beautiful Updos Bun of Braids

This hairstyle would be perfect for dance, gymnastics, ballet, cheer, weddings, Prom, Homecoming, or for every day wear!  You can dress it up by wearing something formal, or dress it down with a cute t-shirt and jeans.

The best thing about this beautiful bun, is that it can last you for two days!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bun maker, 1 small hair elastic, 6-8 hair pins, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 10-12 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin with your hair in a high ponytail…
  2. Put the ponytail of hair through the middle of a bun maker, and let the hair natural separate and fall until it covers the entire bun maker…
  3. Now create a little separation in one spot on the bun maker {this is where you will begin your first braid}…
  4. Gather about one inch of hair, and begin a simple braid {the braid needs to be somewhat loose, don’t pull it too tight as you braid}…
  5. Braid down this length of hair about 6-8 inches, enough to wrap around the bun maker once, and that’s it…
  6. Now, stick your fingers down through the middle of the bun maker, and underneath it, grabbing the end of the braid and pulling it through {this wraps the braid once around the bun maker}…
  7. Next, taking that same braid, separate any still braided hair so that all the hair in the strand is loose again…
  8. Add in about ½ inch of new hair to your first strand, making sure to mix the hair thoroughly by running your fingers through it {ensuring that the short strand is now evenly mixed with the longer new strand}…
  9. Now, divide your newly-created section of hair into three even strands and begin a regular a new three strand braid {again, only braid down about 6-8 inches}…
  10. Reach your fingers down through the bun maker, and underneath it, and pull through this braid, making another braid wrap around the bun.
  11. Next, take a hair pin, and pin together the very outside edges of the two braids, on the underside of the bun {helping to cover the bun maker}…
  12. Now loosen any left over braiding to the strand, and add in a new 1/2 inch section of hair once again…
  13. Complete Steps #8-12 until you have used up all remaining hair…
  14. One your last braid, continue with a simple braid all the way down the strand, and secure with an elastic…
  15. Wrap this braid around the bun maker as many times as you can, keeping in mind that it needs to be loose enough to pancake it {the number of wraps depends on your hair length, for Kamri’s I wrapped it twice around and pinned the end inside the bun} …
  16. Now go back and pancake the braids by tugging on the elbows of the braids, to create a full textured effect to the bun {you really want the braids to be nice and flat, which will very much help hide the bun maker}…
  17. Use hair pins, to help make the bun have a perfect look…
  18. Add an accessory and hairspray {as desired}.

Please feel free to leave a comment below letting us know what you think updo! To where would you wear this style?

Happy Hairstyling!

We’ve been traveling a lot this summer, and our twins are now in Utah for two weeks without us! {Yes, I miss them terribly!} So, in preparation for the trip, the girls filmed a teen “Airplane Essentials” and uploaded it on Wednesday to their BrooklynAndBailey YouTube channel! How to create a Lace-Rolled Updo

July 06, 2014

Time for another beautiful updo hairstyle! It is Summer, and it is hot, and we are always looking for ways to pull the hair off of our necks!

Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle

Today we are going to show you how to create a Lace-Rolled Updo! Yes, this hairstyle has an elegant look, with Lace Braids being used as the basis for the combination!

Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle

{To learn how to create a simple Lace Braid, feel free to this beginner look at the braid.}

Bailey volunteered to be my model today, as she is a huge fan of up do’s {if you couldn’t already tell}! To see your own recreations of this style featured in our CGH App, feel free to tag your own photos of this hairstyle with: #CGHLaceRolledUpdo

Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle

This hairstyle would be perfect for prom, homecoming, weddings, any formal occasion, or just that day when your feeling like wearing something a little more fancy with your hair up!

Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle Lace-Rolled Updo Hairstyle

You can keep it crisp and clean, or feel free to pancake the braid edges to give it a more boho look!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, 6-8 bobby pins, and hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 15 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair off to one side {you can also do it in the middle, if you would like}…
  2. Start near the temple, and create a Lace Braid {meaning you will only pick up hair and add it into the braid from one side, for this style I added hair on the side closest to the ears}…
  3. Continue braiding your way down the hair line, and above the ear, adding in hair as you go…
  4. Once you get to just behind the ear, stop adding in hair and finish of the strand in a simple braid.
  5. Secure the lace braid with an elastic.
  6. Now go back and pancake the braid, by tugging outward on the braid elbows {I pulled the top edge of the lace braid closest to the part line for added effect}, and then pancake both sides of the regular braid…
  7. Repeat Steps #2-6 on the other side of the head.
  8. TIME SAVER TIP: Once both braids are completed, take a bendable straight bun maker, with a slit in the middle, and pull the remaining hair through the middle slit…
  9. Then carefully roll the hair up into the bun maker.
  10. Once the hair is rolled to the scalp, you can fold the ends down under the roll to secure it {this will give the effect that the hair is rolled and bobby-pinned into place, when it is, in fact, not}.
  11. Now take the lace braids and cross them in the back on top of the rolled hair {if hair is extra long, feel free to fold the braid and pin it under itself, as I have done}…
  12. You should now have a layered braid effect on top of the rolled hair, which looks quite dramatic and pretty.
  13. Add any bobby pins to secure the braids down, or any remaining hair into place {you can also add a bobby pin to the edge of the lace braid if it is curling forward}.
  14. Add hairspray, or accessory {as desired}.

Please feel free to leave a comment below letting us know what you think of this Lace-Rolled Updo hairstyle! For what occasions would you wear this?

Happy Hairstyling!

How to Create a 3D Flower Braid | Cute Updos

May 04, 2014

As Spring is fully upon us, with lots of Proms and formal school dances going on, Kamri and I wanted to teach you a variation of a hairstyle we showed you all last year.

This particular variation we call a 3D Flower Bun.

3D Flower Bun

Feel free to click here to see our original 3D Round Braid.

3D Flower Bun Hairstyle

We used that exact 3D Round Braid as the base for this hairstyle, however my good friend Abby Smith suggested that we pancake the edge of the braid to give the petals a more profound look. We LOVED it!

Feel free to tag your own photos of this hairstyle with: #CGH3DFlowerBun

This updo hairstyle holds up very well, and is perfect for those formal dances, weddings, flower girl styles, gymnastics, ballet, or just a day out!

Yes, you will get lots of compliments on this one… GUARANTEED! Special thanks to Kamri for volunteering to be our model today!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 ponytail holder, 1 small hair elastic, 4-6 bobby pins, pomade or hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin creating a 3d round braid by pulling the hair into a high ponytail, and secure it with a hair band…
  2. Now divide hair into 4 equal sections, laying each section between one of your fingers on your right hand….
  3. The hair should lay like this: Strand #1 {outside pinky finger}, Strand #2 {between pinky and ring finger}, Strand #3 {between ring finger and middle finger}, strand #4 {between middle and index finger}…
  4. Now, take the index finger on your left hand and use it to hook Strand #3. It should now lay between your pointer finger and your middle finger.
  5. Take your middle finger and hook Strand #1. This will now lay between your middle and ring finger…
  6. Take the last two pieces and twist them once {so they cross over each other} and place them so Strand #4 lays between your ring finger and pinky and Strand #2 lays outside your pinky…
  7. All strands should now be sitting in your left hand and will be numbered 1-4 from left to right…
  8. Take your right index finger and hook Strand #2. This will now lay between your index and middle finger…
  9. Next, take your middle finger and hook Strand #4. This will now lay between your middle and ring finger…
  10. With the last two remaining strands, do a half twist so they cross, and then place them so Strand #1 now lays between your rink finger and pinky, with Strand #3 laying outside your pinky…
  11. Repeat Steps #4-10 until you run out of hair, and secure with an elastic…
  12. Now go back and pancake the braid {all four sides] by tugging on the elbows of the braid, without pulling the hair out of the braid…
  13. When finished pancaking the braid, begin to twist the braid up around itself into a bun {you will want to bobby pin the bun as you go}.
  14. Continue wrapping the braid around, and tuck the ends under the bun, securely pinning them out of sight, and securing the rest of the bun with pins…
  15. Then, tug the edges of the bun again to create the defined petals of the beautiful flower bun.
  16. Add hairspray {as desired}.

Hope you enjoy the app, and more importantly, continue to enjoy our family!

Happy Hairstyling!

Today’s tutorial is inspired by the upcoming Prom season, and multiple reader requests for hairstyles that can be used at the dance.

We are loving Fishtail Braids right now, and Brooklyn and I wanted to show you an updo that is very unique using the fishtail as the focal point.

Flipped Fishtail Updo | Prom Hairstyles

If you do not know how to fishtail braid, here is my first fishtail tutorial showing you how to create one.

_N0A0613 _N0A0649 _N0A0634

Want to learn how to create a Flipped-Fishtail Braid Updo? Here is your chance…

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 ponytail holder, 1 small hair elastic, Topsy Tail Tool {optional}, 4-5 bobby pins, decorative hair comb, spray wax or hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 6-8 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by pulling the hair back and secure it a low ponytail with a ponytail holder {make sure to leave a few strands of hair out near the front, and curl them, to frame the face}…
  2. Loosen the ponytail elastic away from the head a little. Using a topsy tail tool, or your fingers, flip the ponytail down though the loosened section to create a flipped ponytail…
  3. Now tighten the elastic again against the head…
  4. Next, fishtail braid the remaining ponytail hair and secure with an elastic when you run out of hair…
  5. Take the end of the fishtail and tuck it back up and down through the same hole {this creates a nice bun-like updo}…
  6. Using bobby pins, secure the fishtail against the head so it won’t fall out or droop down through the day.
  7. Add an glam accessory on top of the fishtail flip to accent the updo…
  8. Add hairspray or spray wax {as desired}.

Please feel free to leave me a comment below letting us know what you think of this Flipped-Fishtail Updo! As always, if you loved the tutorial, please feel free to share it!
