April 21, 2013

BONUS: Be sure to see our Disney-exclusive “Tinker Bell Hair Bun” tutorial on the DisneysStyle YT channel!

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

This is not a new hairstyle by any means, and it can be seen all over Pinterest, but we wanted to show you how we create it in our household!

Yarn Fishtail Braid | Temporary Color Highlights | Cute Hairstyles

We were simply feeling the urge to help bring out the “Spring” feeling by filming this tutorial!  It definitely helped!

Yarn Fishtail Braid | Temporary Color Highlights | Cute Hairstyles

This fishtail braid with blended yarn highlights is perfect for cheerleaders and dancers, but also great for girls during Spirit Week {using school colors} or Crazy Hair Day!  My twins wore this out last week and had lots of people intrigued and taking photos!

Now, you all know that I am not a fan of highlights or permanent coloring in my young girls’ hair.

What I love about our Chalk Highlights tutorial and this Yarn Extension Braid, is that there are ways to get a cute color accents in the hair without a long-term commitment and potential chemical damage!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 1 hair elastic, 12-14 yarn strands {from 3 or 4 colors} each measuring twice as long as your hair.

Time Requirement: 10 minutes, including tying in the yarn.

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by sectioning off the top part of the hair and securing with a rubber band to keep it out of the way, leaving the rest of the hair down…
  2. Now, take a yarn strand and tie it onto the base of a sectioned strand of hanging hair {you do this by placing the yarn perpendicular behind the hair and at the base, and tying a simple square knot in the yarn around the hair. To keep the knot from slipping, you can teaze the hair a little below the knot}…
  3. Next, grab another piece of yarn {different color} and tie it on the next strand of hair {try to place different colors of yarn next to each other, so their is a variety}…
  4. Once you have placed all your yarn strands {we used about 13 strands}. drop the remaining top hair down over the top to hide the knots…
  5. Now, sweep all hair over one shoulder, gather it, and separate it into two sections…
  6. Begin a regular Fishtail Braid by taking one outside tiny piece of hair, cross it over and into the other section of hair. Be sure to include a yarn strand in each section…
  7. Now repeat on the other side.
  8. Repeat Steps #6 and #7 all the way down {remember, try to get a strand or two of yarn in each piece you cross over}…
  9. Once you have completed your fishtail braid, secure it with a hair elastic. You can also take some of the extra length of the yarn and wrap it around the elastic to hide it.  We show you how to do this in the video…
  10. Lastly, go back and tug/pop out any hidden strands of yarn so that you can see them better. You can also pancake the fishtail a little to broaden the braid, soften the look, and help the colors show through.
  11. Prepare for compliments!

Vanellope von Schweetz | Wreck-It Ralph Hairstyles

November 25, 2012

Vanellope von Schweetz, the sweet, but very spunky character from Disney’s new movie Wreck-It Ralph is sure to inspire you or your daughter next Halloween or Crazy Hair Day!

Vanellope von Schweetz Hairstyle

When Disney first provided us with photos, long before the movie came out, we knew it would be a challenge that my daughters and I could meet!  We tried hard to keep the style true to form, and you can now see this style on Disney.com and the DisneysStyle YouTube channel.

Here’s how to get Vanellope’s deliciously-edible hairstyle…

You may need some bobby pins with a flat head and mini jaw clips.  You then can hot glue the candies and fake peppermints onto the flat heads, so they stay firmly in place in the hair.

Hairstyle Steps:

  1. If you have bangs, part them to one side and straighten them to frame the face. {If you don’t have bangs simply pull all your hair back into the ponytail.}
  2. Create a high ponytail.  You simply comb all the hair up to the top of the head and secure with an elastic…
  3. Tease the top of the ponytail to add volume and fullness…
  4. I tied the licorice around the ponytail holder and cut the ends short enough they stuck up a little, as seen in the movie and photos.  Also you may want to use some red fluffy yarn instead of licorice, depending on whether you want to use real licorice in your hair and humidity…
  5. Now… have fun accessorizing the hair with an assortment of your real and/or fake treats!

Items Needed: Brush, comb, hairspray, rubberbands, and lots of treats or craft items.  Some of the items we used included a 2-foot Pull-n Peel Twizzlers licorice rope, for the signature hair tie.  We also used Spree candy, scrapbook pop-up dots, peppermint candies {fake}, candy buttons, etc. Flat-head bobby pins, hot glue gun.

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Enjoy!

Happy Hairdoing!

Braided {Kitty} Cat Ears | Halloween Hairstyles

October 30, 2012

It is always fun to create new Halloween Hairstyles!

Many fans have asked if there is any way to make cat ears using your own hair, so that you do not have to pay for those expensive pre-made cat ear headbands.

Well… yes, there is!!!

Braided Kitty Cat Ears | Halloween Hairstyles

I have to give a special thanks to our CGH#4 who happily volunteered to be our model {although she doesn’t volunteer often for our tutorials}!

Braided Kitty Cat Ears | Halloween Hairstyles

Steps:

  1. I began by sectioning off two small square sections of hair on either side of the middle part line, and secured them with an elastic band.
  2. For the first ear, I then took two black pipe cleaners, twisting them together, and then braided the two pipe cleaners as the “third” strand of a 3-strand braid.  Secure with another elastic band.
  3. Then, take the finished braid and bend it into a point in a spot that looks good to you, and continue on to fashion the kitty cat ear. Finish the ear by wrapping the end of the braid around the original base, which secures itself because of the pipe cleaners.
  4. Repeat the same step on the other side.

While finishing this style, we also suggest that you can use red pipe cleaners to create devil horns if you wish to be a Little Red Devil for Halloween!  Similar braiding with different colored pipe cleaners can help you create Minnie Mouse ears, puppy ears, bunny ears, piglet ears, and on and on!!!

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and I think that it turned out very cute!

By the way, this was my absolute photo out of all the shoot!  Little CGH#4 certainly has her own personality, and as this photo and the video point out… she does what she wants to do!  And, we are OK with that!!!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 4 hair elastics, 4 long black pipe cleaners, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5-7 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Leather Accent Loony Braids | Cute Braids

October 28, 2012

Since Halloween is only a few days away, we decided to show you what CGH#3 wants to be for Halloween! She did not want to be a fairy, or something scary… she wanted to be someone from history. The challenge is to come up with cute Halloween hairstyles!

We, of course, were going for Pocahontas, but are very careful not use the character name in the tutorial due to our contract with Disney, so we are calling this a “Native American Princess” hairstyle.

Loony Braid with Leather Accents

{* Note from Mindy:  Please note, my daughter’s choice in dress this year is not in any way mocking an indigenous culture and is nothing more than an honor and celebration of it.  She has been studying early American history in school this first semester, talks about Native American culture every day, and has been checking out books at the library and reading them on her own. She loves the stories of Pocahontas and Sacagawea. Not sure if any of our fans, know this, but our youngest daughter is 1/16th Native American {from her great-great grandmother}.  We honor and celebrate all cultures in our home.}

Given all of our braided hairstyles to choose from, we simply could not settle for a 3-strand braid. We wanted something a little different, so decided to accent an idea from one of our old videos called Loony Braids.

  1. We began by parting the hair down the middle of the head, and into two side ponytails. We then took a basic strand of crafting leather, doubled it over, and secured it around the ponytail.
  2. The next step is to grab the whole ponytail and use it as one of the three braiding strands along with the two remaining strands of leather. {Yes, the hair actually becomes the 3rd strand!}
  3. Once I braided to the end of the ponytail, I secured it with a clear hair elastic and cut of any excess leather. You could also simply take the remaining strands of leather and create a bow at the end.
  4. Repeat the same steps as above on the other ponytail…

Loony Braids with Leather Accents | Cute Braid Ideas

You can see that by braiding the two small strands of leather along with the ponytail acting as the 3rd strand, that the resulting braid has a very fun zig-zag look to it!  You can pull out the elbows of the braid to make the braid look more “jagged”, but we left the braid as is for this style.

This can be an everyday braid, and you can substitute pretty much anything in place of the leather for a different accented look.  You can use ribbon, colored yarn/string, strips of fabric, old necklace chains, etc.

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, leather strands, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Medium
