DIY Faux Waterfall Headband

February 22, 2015

Since Bailey has cheer in the mornings, and early-morning seminary before that, she has to get up at 4:45 am to get ready for school.  As such, she’s become a master at quick and easy hairstyles, and this DIY Faux Waterfall Braid Headband is one she absolutely loves!

Faux Waterfall Braid Headband

This hairstyle is one Bailey has been wearing a lot lately, and it literally only takes 2 minutes to create! In fact, it is so easy that even a daddy can do it! Learn how by clicking the video below…

To see your own photo recreations of this style featured in our app, feel free to tag your photos on IG with: #CGHFauxWaterfall

If you know how to create a simple 3-strand braid, you can do this! This is also a perfect hairstyle if you are growing out your bangs, as the faux braid keeps them out of your face in that in-between growing phase {with your bangs becoming the waterfall-en strands}.

Faux Waterfall Braid Headband Faux Waterfall Braid HeadbandAt the end of the tutorial, Bailey also shares a few tricks to help keep the waterfall strands looking great!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, 2 small bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 2-3 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin with your hair curled {Bailey used a flat iron to get her curls}…
  2. On your preferred side, create a deep side part {it needs to be very deep, we started near the end of one eyebrow}…
  3. Next, create a small section of hair next to the deep part line and begin a regular 3-strand braid…
  4. Braid down about 8 inches and secure the braid with a small hair elastic…
  5. On the side of the braid closest to the crown, you will be working with the backside bumps along the braid, also called the elbows…
  6. Grab the outside edge of the very first stitch and pull it away from the braid a ittle bit, and sticking your pointer finger and thumb through the hole you just created…
  7. Now, grab a small section of hair from the front of your head by your forehead and pull it through the loop and towards the back of your head…
  8. Continue Steps #6-7 for each elbow of the braid, until you have reached the end of your other eyebrow and used up all your bangs {usually 5-6 sections}…
  9. Next, take the end of the braid and tuck it under the hair on the side/back, and secure into place with a bobby pin…
  10. Allow the hair to fall back over the top of the braid…
  11. Lift up the waterfall strands on top, and using a rat-tooth comb, tease the underside of the hair to keep the strands laying straight back and volumized…
  12. Optional: Feel free to pancake the front elbows of the braid to create and added pop and accent to the braid.
  13. Add hairspray.

Pull-Through Braid | Easy Hairstyles

November 17, 2013

My favorite hairstyles over the years happen to be the ones that are so easy to do, but they leave your friends wondering exactly how you did it!

Today’s braid is just like that! This came from Emily, a viewer who emailed me with a photo asking if I could recreate it.

Pull-Through Braid | Cute BraidsThe style looks something like a simple braid, but the elbows are not offset… they are exactly the same, looking like little inverted hearts sitting on top of each other.

Plus, this Pull-Through Braid is so easy, even a daddy can do it! {Although I can imagine dads getting out their Stanley tape measures to make sure that each stitch is exactly two inches long!}

In the video below, I show you how to create a high-braid version on my third daughter.

Then my oldest, Brooklyn, shows you her DIY side braid version that she did herself in about three minutes this morning.

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 hair band, 10+/- small hair elastics, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5-7 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. {Optional} Add any accent twists or braids to the top, before pulling hair into a high ponytail…
  2. Now, begin by pulling hair up into a high ponytail and secure with a hair band…
  3. Separate the ponytail into two sections, a top section and a bottom section…
  4. On the top section, slide down about two inches and add a hair elastic {you can leave it slightly loose}…
  5. Next make a hole in the middle of that two-inch segment, and reach through the hole pulling through the underneath hair section…
  6. Cinch the back elastic upward to create a heart-shaped segment look…
  7. Now move down another two inches on your new top strand…
  8. Add a hair elastic, make another hole in the middle of the new segment, pull through the underneath hair strand, and cinch the back elastic upwards.
  9. Repeat Step #8 until you run out of hair…
  10. Now, secure both sections, at the bottom of the braid, together with one final elastic.
  11. Go back and pancake the hair {tugging on the elbows of each section} to flatten out the braid and give it a fuller, more beautiful look.

Please feel free to leave me a comment below letting us know what you think of the Pull-Through Braid!  As always, if you loved this hairstyle, please feel free to share it!

Happy Hairdoing!

Faux Fishtail Braid | Easy Braid Hairstyles

February 17, 2013

Today’s video features CGH#1 filming her very first tutorial!

If you are like me and my girls, you love fishtail braids… but fishtails can take “soooo looooong” to style! We have shown you before how to create fake fishtail braids, but this technique is so easy and super fast!

Faux Fishtail Braid | Easy Braid HairstylesMy twins love this style because it’s so fast and easy, but looks so much like a fishtail that sometimes people cannot even tell a difference!

CGH #1 wanted to show all of you this braid because it is a morning go-to style when you are in a hurry because it can be done in “2 minutes or less”!

Items Needed: Brush, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 1-2 minutes

Skill Level: Very Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by sweeping the hair over to one side and over the shoulder {your hair can be curly or straight to begin with… either one looks great}…
  2. Take you thumb and forefinger and push them through the back of your hair to the front of the hair…
  3. Then, using those two fingers… grab the bottom of the ponytail and flip it through the hole created by your fingers…
  4. Make sure and hold the hair securely after the first flip, so that the twist generated by the flip does not unravel {This one can easily come undone if you don’t hold it tight. Also, don’t worry if the flip is down away from your head a bit}…
  5. If you feel that the flip is down too low simply reinsert your thumb and forefinger again through the hair {make sure you don’t go through the exact same spot!} and pull the bottom of the ponytail through once more {you want the new flip to be slightly off from the original one}…
  6. Give the hair a slight tug downward to help straighten out any excess bumps or thickness in flips {you will notice that once you have created a flip or two, your hair will likely hold its shape and often won’t even come undone if you let go}…
  7. Continue down the ponytail, adding as many flips as you wish by using the same method as above. {Please make sure each time you are instering your fingers through the ponytail, that you do so in a slightly different spot. This help the hair hold, and creates the fishtail braid-like look.
  8. When you run out of hair, secure the the bottom with an elastic.
  9. Feel free to loosen any pieces or tug on the edges of the fishtail to create a messier more romantic look.

Also, we present to you our four favorite names for our new family puppy… from the over 16,000 fan suggestions you left in our last video. Our four favorites are Chewy {from Chewbacca in Star Wars}, Thor {because this little guy is so tough}, Mousse {play on words for a tough Moose and the mousse foam used in hair, and Braidy {play on words for Brady, the boy’s name, and “Braid”y, since we are huge fans of braids!

For the next week, are allowing our fans to vote for their favorite from among those four names, and we will announce the new puppy’s name in our next video! Be sure to comment on YouTube below the video with your vote!

CuteGirlsHairstyles on Disney Junior

February 06, 2013

Several months ago we were contacted by a producer from Disney Online who asked if we would be interested in helping out with one of their online episodes…

Ironically, we were already in LA meeting with another division within Mickey-ville responsible for the DisneyStyle YouTube channel… and neither division knew about the other’s interest in us! Since we were already in town, we agreed to help.

Dads | CuteGirlsHairstyles on DisneyJr

We filmed this webisode with Mark and his beautiful 2-yr old daughter. Mark is a stay-at-home dad who is doing his absolute best to cover for mom while she works. {There is something so cute about a daddy “trying” that endears them to us, right???}

Here we introduce Mark to the Topsy Tail tool, and how to use it. In fact, Shaun, my hubby demonstrates it for him… and Mark learned it perfectly!

Interestingly enough, this Dads short was only supposed to be viewed on Disney Online, however all throughout these past two months, it has been airing on Disney Jr at night! {That came as a HUGE surprise to us!}

How did we know??? Several hundred of our fans throughout the US have been commenting on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, or emailing us to state that they had just seen us on Disney Junior!

Well, we contacted Disney and the responsible team authorized us {thanks, Disney!} to show you our Dads episode here on Cute Girls Hairstyles…

Enjoy!

If you loved this video, please go here and leave a comment for Mark {the dad} about how awesome he did!  We certainly need more involved daddies like Mark in this world!

And… as always, feel free to share! Happy Hairdoing!

In this hairstyle tutorial we have an exciting surprise for you all!

CGH#2 asked me if she could film a tutorial, so we decided to mix it up a bit by allowing her to teach you one of her go-to hairstyles on herself! She was so nervous to be teaching the tutorial… but you can see her courage as you watch the video! Her fans were so good to her in the comment box on YouTube… it was quite sweet!

Simple Braided Bun | Cute Girls Hairstyles

This simple braided bun is a cute, quick style designed for young teenagers learning to do their own hair or people who need a great style in a hurry!

We especially thought of this one with swimmers {wet hair} as well as for other athletics or cheer/dance! The hairstyle is also great for “day-three” hair, which is best worn up so you can pull it back and still look good.

Simple Braided Bun Hairstyle

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 2 hair elastics, 1 rubber band, hairspray, and a few bobby pins or spin pins {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level:  Easy

Simple Braided Bun Hairstyle

Hairstyle Steps:

  1. Comb all of the hair up into a high ponytail… {You will want it to sit high on the head, not on the back of your head.}
  2. Secure the high ponytail with a hair elastic…
  3. Divide the ponytail into three sections and create a simple, basic braid down to the ends of the hair…
  4. Secure this braid with a small elastic {preferably the same color as your hair}…
  5. Then twist the braid around the front of the ponytail holder to create the bun effect. {You really want the braid to lay flat against the rubberband so that the braid is featured well}…
  6. Once the hair is all twisted around into a bun, secure it with another hair elastic or bobbypins/spin pins. {Either way will work fine, so simply pick whatever is most comfortable for you.}…
  7. Add a little pop to the hairstyle by throwing on a cute headband as an accessory.
Enjoy!

Happy Hairdoing!
