The Bow Braid | Cute Braided Hairstyles

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

I am always on the lookout for the next Waterfall Braid-type hairstyle!

About two weeks ago, a Twitter fan tweeted us a photo of a very intricately-laced bow braid hairstyle, and I thought the idea was so fun and unique! In fact, it was likely the most creative and cute hairstyle I have seen since the Waterfall Braid! So… I sat down to figure it out, but after many attempts I wasn’t having much luck at all.  Close, but nothing worth posting…

Another fan, Katrina on Facebook, posted her version along with a link to a low resolution Russian YouTube video showing the exact technique.  The video was at times hard to follow, and it does not show a finished hairstyle, but it provided me with just enough info to be able to master the braid! With that, I am now ready to teach you all!

The Bow Braid | Cute Girls Hairstyles

You can use The Bow Braid in pretty much any hairstyle as long as there is a three-stranded French or Lace Braid involved.  It will work on short hair, medium hair, long hair, layered hair, hair with bangs, combos, etc.

In the tutorial, I show you how to do Bow Braid Ponytails, but I also show you on myself and the other daughters some finished looks for a braided headband, diagonal braid, and lace braid.

Items Needed: A brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, hairspray or pomade, a hairpin (not a bobby pin), and a few hair elastics.

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes, depending on the hairstyle you choose.

Steps:

  1. Begin by braiding a section of your hair. You can use a lace braid or a 3 strand French braid. Remember you will need another ½ inch section of hair parted next to your braid to create the bows.
  2. Thread the hairpin, loop end first, through a section of your braid to prepare it to pull through hair for the bow.
  3. Take a small section of hair from the ½ inch parted section and create a loop with your fingers.
  4. Thread the loop of hair through the hairpin and grab loop of hair with left hand while gently tugging the hairpin back through your hair with your right hand.
  5. As you pull the hairpin out of the braid it will begin to form the other half of the bow. Gently tug the hairpin until you like the look of the second loop and then remove it from hair. You should now have one competed bow that runs through the braid.
  6. Repeat Steps 1-5 all the way down the braid until you run out of hair.

{You can see in the video that I mixed in the remaining tails of the bows back into the next strand. It may be easier and less “messy” to simply lay the tails alongside the French Braid and then bring down the next section of hair over the top for the next loop. As you finish the braid, most of the tails will be covered by the hair from the top. It all depends on how you want the bow braid to look.}

Spiral Twists | Updo Hairstyles

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

This is a viewer-inspired hairstyle! Cristina emailed me with a link to a YouTube video where she wanted to show me a hairdo that she loves to do on her daughter. We viewed it, liked it, and filmed our own take on it with an added “spin” {literally}!  Thanks, Cristina!

Spiral Twisty Bun Hairstyle

This style is different than our Rosette Bun hairstyle, as the spirals set right against the head.  The Rosette Buns were essentially bantu knots, or twisty buns.

To begin this hairstyle, we decided to incorporate our Double French Twistbacks from the front that we added into a high ponytail. {We are a big fan of hairstyle combinations whenever it makes sense!} Then you simply divide the ponytail into three sections.

Take each section individually and twist them, and then roll it up into a spiral wheel {like a cinnamon roll}. Then simply bobby pin the spiral securely, and repeat the same with the other two sections.

Now, I apologize on the photos for being taken 8 hours after we did the hairstyle {we forgot}, but what you see is that this style held up quite nicely after a fairly active day for an eight-year old! To help control the flyaways, you can use hairspray (which I also forgot to do).

This hairstyle is great for girls and women of all ages, and especially perfect for weddings, communions, baptisms, flower girls, ballet, Prom, Homecoming, etc. You will also find that by sleeping on the spirals… you will have a gorgeous curled ponytail as a “2nd Day ‘Do”! Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 ponytail holder, 6-7 large bobby pins, hairspray.

Time Requirement:5 minutes (15 minutes if you do the Double French Twistbacks)

Lady Gaga Hair Bow | Video Hairstyles

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Lady Gaga first introduced the “Hair Bow” hairstyle to the masses back in 2009, and it has gained steady popularity every since. Aside from her Grade-A meat dress, or being carried to an awards show in an UFO-looking egg, this is another of her popular fashion moments and certainly the most duplicated.

Lady Gaga Bow Hairstyle

We have received hundreds of requests for our own version of the bow hair style over the past few months. It has been perhaps the most asked-for style we have ever had!

Just last weekend, we finally found some time to film the bow hairstyle version that my girls have been wearing. We get compliments all the time on how cute it is, so we are sure you are going to like it!

Hairstyle - Lady Gaga Hair Bow

This is a perfect hairstyle for your daughter if she decides to dress up as Minnie Mouse {along with a set of Disney mouse ears), also good for Crazy Hair Day, or used in a variety of hairstyle combos {we plan to show some in later tutorials}.

Hairstyles - Lady Gaga Hair Bow (Back)

If you have seen the pictures of Lady Gaga’s bow, you will notice that it is a half-up/half-down hairstyle. We opted for a full on updo for our tutorial, but you can do it either way. You may also choose to angle the ponytail to either side so that the bow if offset. The great thing about this hairstyle is that it is completely up to you! Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 hair band, 6-7 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}

Time Requirement: 5 minutes
