Braid-Wrapped Chignon | Cute Updo’s

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

It is time for another updo hairstyle!  This one is actually a very quick and easy ‘do… and it looks beautiful!

You can see that my daughter’s hair is fairly straight this day, so it really made the style look sleek and crisp.  {If you or your daughter have waves and will be straightening your hair, please use a good heat protectant first… although I think this would look cute even with wavy hair!}  I then created a microbraid right behind each ear {not shown in video} that will be used for the chignon wraparound.

For the next step, I then brought two sections of the hair from the front/sides to the back and secured them with an elastic hair band.  Then, with my rat-tail comb, I gently ratted the remaining section of that ponytail pullback to help create my stuffing for the chignon bun.

Then I secured the remaining hair with another elastic hairband at the ends, and gently rolled it up over the ratted ponytail and tucked it behind the tieback.  Feel free to secure the hair to your desired look by using bobby pins {as I did in the tutorial, since my roll-up was not exactly how I wanted it}.

I then brought each of the microbraids from just behind the ears and wrapped them around the chignon, securing them with bobby pins.

This is a gorgeous style, and perfect for girls of all ages.! Of course, it is meant more for formal occasions/holidays so if you do this on your daughter on a day when she will be active… it will likley fall out.  We would recommend this chignon hairstyle for church, weddings, flower girls, award banquets, communions, Prom, Homecoming, or any other formal occasions.  Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 4elastic hair bands, 4-6 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}

Time Requirement: Approximately 5 minutes

Double Waterfall Braid | Cute Hairstyles

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

I promise to keep bringing you updated Waterfall Braid hairstyles from time to time, since this braid is so popular.

This tutorial incorporates a very beautiful double-version of the braid…

Double Waterfall Braid Hairstyle {Back Close-up}

To just prep the style, I had her hair in simple braids the day before.  Taking them out left a very subtle curl with waves that really accented well the waterfall braids.  {This style will look just as cute on straight hair, but I wanted those of you with curly hair to see that the Waterfall Braid looks great on you, too!}

I started by joining two waterfall braids from the front going backward, and secured them together with one clear hair elastic. {If you do not know how to Waterfall Braid, please see the links below the video.}

Now, for the lower waterfall braids I repeated the exact same process… however the hair I pick up from the top is actually a cascaded strand from the upper waterfall braid.  I then finished it off into a hair-wrapped ponytail, to hide the elastic.

One of the best parts of this hairstyle is that it can be incorporated in any number of combos.

For example, yesterday I did this on myself {I have shoulder-length hair} and finished it off into a low messy bun.  Yesterday was my shopping day and I must have had 1o comments or so on just my hairstyle, with a few of the girls really wanting to know how to do it. You could also finish it off by separating the remaining hair into messy/loose side braids, or pull it all back up into a fun and curly updo.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 clear elastic bands, hairspray and accesory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes

Braided Crown | Updo Hairstyles

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

I have been wanting to upload this Braided Crown hairstyle for along time, having been asked for it a ton, but I wanted it to be perfect just for you!

Crown Braid {Side}

There are so many tutorials out there that teach you how to do the crown braid, but ours was intended to be one of the most clean and crisp variations of the style. What I mean is that some variations use a ponytail on top from which you pull strands down into the crown braid. I do not particularly like that version as it leaves a bump and hole on the top of the head. {It also makes the crown appear more like a braided wheel with spokes.} Our version is intended to look like a braided halo was simply placed on the head.

The Crown Braid uses the Dutch Braiding technique, but you simply pull the hair in on top only from the front. This is what makes the hairstyle to look so simple and clean, and allows for the braid to pop out.

This braid style is perfect for so many occasions such as Renaissance festivals, Oktoberfest, Halloween princess hair, weddings, flower girls, prom, homecoming, graduation, baptism/communion, etc. It is particularly great for cheer, gymnastics, ballet, and other sports due to its tight braiding.   The style even makes for very pretty skirt curls in a second-day ‘do!  Enjoy!
