The Nested Braid | Easy Hairstyles

For those of you who do not know, my twins, Brooklyn and Bailey, launched their YouTube channel three weeks ago! They have a handful of videos up that show a little more about their personalities and interests! If you like their channel and videos, please feel free to SUBSCRIBE!

Today, Brooklyn wanted to show all of you an easy hairstyles that she has been using lately.
I asked her if she wanted me to do the style on her, and she replied with a smile, “No, I can do it!” {That teenager independence, or twindependence, is already making its appearance!}
Brooklyn was still a little nervous to do this tutorial on her own, but keep in mind that she just turned 13 a few months ago. If you feel she did a great job, feel free to leave a comment below!
This “Nested” Braid uses a simple braid from the bang area, down the right side of the forehead, and then incorporated along with the middle strand of a simple side braid.
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, 1 hair band, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 3-4 minutes
Skill Level: Easy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin with a deep part, allowing most of the hair to fall to one side of the head {middle parts will not look as good with this hairstyle}…
- Pick up a medium section of hair near the forehead on the front side of the hair, where the majority of the hair lies…
- Begin a simple three-stranded braid with this section {this is a great way to incorporate bangs to keep them out of your face}…
- After finishing the braid, secure the end of the braid with an elastic matching your hair color…
- Now swoop the rest of your hair loosely over to the right shoulder, and divide it into three strands to create a simple side braid…
- Add the original braid from the forehead into the middle strand of this side braid….
- Once the small braid is added, make a simple side braid with all the remaining hair…
- After finishing the side braid, secure with a hair band (feel free to remove the small elastic from the original small braid, if it shows at the ends of hair}…
- Gently tug on the elbows of the braid to broaden it, and you are finished!

Faux Fishtail Braid | Easy Braid Hairstyles

Today’s video features CGH#1 filming her very first tutorial!
If you are like me and my girls, you love fishtail braids… but fishtails can take “soooo looooong” to style! We have shown you before how to create fake fishtail braids, but this technique is so easy and super fast!
My twins love this style because it’s so fast and easy, but looks so much like a fishtail that sometimes people cannot even tell a difference!
CGH #1 wanted to show all of you this braid because it is a morning go-to style when you are in a hurry because it can be done in “2 minutes or less”!
Items Needed: Brush, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 1-2 minutes
Skill Level: Very Easy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by sweeping the hair over to one side and over the shoulder {your hair can be curly or straight to begin with… either one looks great}…
- Take you thumb and forefinger and push them through the back of your hair to the front of the hair…
- Then, using those two fingers… grab the bottom of the ponytail and flip it through the hole created by your fingers…
- Make sure and hold the hair securely after the first flip, so that the twist generated by the flip does not unravel {This one can easily come undone if you don’t hold it tight. Also, don’t worry if the flip is down away from your head a bit}…
- If you feel that the flip is down too low simply reinsert your thumb and forefinger again through the hair {make sure you don’t go through the exact same spot!} and pull the bottom of the ponytail through once more {you want the new flip to be slightly off from the original one}…
- Give the hair a slight tug downward to help straighten out any excess bumps or thickness in flips {you will notice that once you have created a flip or two, your hair will likely hold its shape and often won’t even come undone if you let go}…
- Continue down the ponytail, adding as many flips as you wish by using the same method as above. {Please make sure each time you are instering your fingers through the ponytail, that you do so in a slightly different spot. This help the hair hold, and creates the fishtail braid-like look.
- When you run out of hair, secure the the bottom with an elastic.
- Feel free to loosen any pieces or tug on the edges of the fishtail to create a messier more romantic look.
Also, we present to you our four favorite names for our new family puppy… from the over 16,000 fan suggestions you left in our last video. Our four favorites are Chewy {from Chewbacca in Star Wars}, Thor {because this little guy is so tough}, Mousse {play on words for a tough Moose and the mousse foam used in hair, and Braidy {play on words for Brady, the boy’s name, and “Braid”y, since we are huge fans of braids!

A few weeks ago, we posted a video called the Ladder Braid Side Ponytail, and it received a lot of positive feedback!
In fact, one of our fans, Ceridwin, adapted the feather braid technique to create a new, beautiful “stacked” braid look, and sent us a photo on Twitter!
I loved it so much that asked her to tell me exactly how she did it so that I could teach you! She agreed, emailed me her instructions, and here you go!
You simply create a large feather braid, with tiny strands coming off each stitch from both sides of the braid. You then go back and Dutch braid the feathered strands on top of the regular braid, and then pancake the latter. Further instructions are below…
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5-8 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by brushing the hair and pulling it to wherever you want the braid to lay. {In the video, I did the hair straight down the back, but a side braid would also be very cute.}
- Using all of your hair, section it into three strands and create the first “stitch” of a simple braid…
- After the first stitch, on every outside edge, you will begin creating a Feather Braid… {On the left-most strand of hair, pull out a sliver of hair off the top and lay it to the side. For a DIY, you can use a clip, teeth, or extra hands to hold the strands out of the way.} Also, for this braid, I chose to feather off larger strands at the top and smaller feathers as we worked our way down…
- Now cross that outside strand over the middle to become the middle strand….
- Then, go to the right-most section of hair and pull out a sliver of hair off the top and lay it to the side, and cross the remaining strand over into the middle…
- Repeat these alternating steps until you run out of hair.
- Secure with an elastic. You should have a normal-looking braid with feather strands of hair coming off both sides of the braid all the way down. {Kind of looks like a feather, huh? LOL! That’s why we call it a Feather Braid!}
- Now, pick up the top two feather strands of the left and the top feather strand on the right.
- Begin a Dutch braid using those strands. {When you need to add hair into the braid, use ONLY the other feather strands of hair on both sides of the braid.}
- When you run out of feather strands, finish off with 2-3 stitches of a regular braid….
- Then, undo the original hair elastic and secure both braids together with that same elastic.
- You should now have two braids right on top of each other, the Stacked Braids.
- To help the Dutch braid stand out just a bit more, you may choose to “pancake” the bottom braid edges, as I did, by gently tugging on the elbows to make them a little more puffy. {This helps add to the overall illusion of braid awesomeness!}

This hairstyle is so fast and simple!
I love a good rope braid {or plait} for those “Running-Behind Mornings” when I do not have much time to get myself or my girls ready before school.
My niece Aniston spent the night last weekend at my house with the twins and she has been begging me for months to film a hairstyle tutorial on her! How can I resist all of that beautiful blonde hair???
{Aniston is just beginning to learn styles on her own hair, so we agreed to teach her a hairstyle that she can recreate easily in on school mornings.}
What I love about a rope braid is that it is not really a braid at all… the only skill needed is to know is how to twist a hair strand. Simple as that! With two 13-year olds myself, helping them learn a few easy hairstyles like this is a simple way to keep them interested in doing their own hair rather than relying on only a ponytail or a headband!
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 large hairband, 1 small hair elastic,1-2 bobby pins, leather strand and hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 3 minutes
Degree of Difficulty: Easy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- To start, begin with straight or curly hair {Either will work fine. Bangs will also work by pulling them into the braid or simply leaving them out and styling as usual}…
- Gather all hair over to one side directly behind the earlobe, and secure into a nice side ponytail with a large hair elastic…
- Section off a small strand of hair {to be used later} from the ponytail and leave it out of the twists…
- Divide the remaining ponytail hair into into two large strands…
- Now, twist those two strands {separately} in the same direction. I twist mine clockwise…
- Once those pieces are fully twisted, now begin winding the twists around each other in “counter-clockwise” direction {going in the opposite direction will keep the hair twists and form secure and tight when you let go of the braid}…
- Continue winding the hair around each other, counter-clockwise, all the way down while adding another twist or two to the original strands just to keep things tight…
- Secure the braid with a tiny elastic that matches the hair.
- Now, take the small section of hair we separated off at the beginning and wrap it around the top hair elastic, to hide it. Secure the hair wrap with a bobby pin, and tuck in any extra hair that remains.
- Feel free to add any cute accessories to the end of the twist.
