Minnie Mouse Buns | Disney Hairstyles

November 19, 2013

By now, everyone here knows that my family has an affinity towards Disney!  It has been a complete honor for us to contribute to DisneysStyle on YouTube for the past two years.

Last month, a representative from Disney Parks approached us about participating in its #DisneySide launch in Disneyland. {Be sure to view my family’s personal photos from the Disney Side Worldwide Campaign Launch last week! I included over 40 adorable shots from the wonderful event!}

Minnie Mouse Buns | Hairstyle TutorialAre you kidding me? How could we turn down an opportunity like that?

One thing they asked us to do as one of their Social Media All-Stars was to produce a video showing our Disney Side.

Last week’s blog post was the first half, giving you a glimpse of the CHG children doing my hair in their own unique personal styles.

They then agreed to give me Minnie Mouse Buns, which is the basis for this tutorial!

Minnie Mouse Buns | Hairstyle TutorialThe Disney Parks team asked me if there was anything I needed to film the tutorial, and we decided to go for it and ask if we could film it in Minnie’s house in Toontown, Disneyland!

We about died when they told us they would give us early-park access to film on location! I mean, who ever gets to do that???

Well, this tutorial is the end result!  We must have had over 500 compliments that day as we bounced between Disneyland and California Adventure! Mothers and daughters were constantly stopping us, requesting photos and to ask how we did it.  {Fortunately, we had this tutorial on the DisneyParks YouTube channel as a place to refer them!}

Enjoy!

Items Needed:  Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 hairbands, 6-8 bobby pins, hair bow clip, and hairspray.

Time Requirement: 10-12 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair down the middle of head…
  2. Create a high ponytail on each side of part line, and secure with an elastic…
  3. Take one of the ponytails and tease it with a comb, to add volume and fullness to the Minnie ear {this is optional, but will make the bun stay more full and in place much better throughout the day}…
  4. Using a smoothing brush, comb only the topmost layer of the teased hair to create a smoothed out look instead of an irregular bumpy look…
  5. Next, pull out a portion of the elastic at the base of the ponytail, and pull the ponytail hair partially through one last time…
  6. You should now have a small fan shaped bun.
  7. Now, spread the fan out until it touches each side of the ponytail base {like a Slinky sitting arched on the table}…
  8. Split the left over hair from the ponytail into two section, and stuff each section of  hair into the tunnel-like hole created by the fanned bun…
  9. Spread the fan out again over the hair  and bobby pin the bases into place {this gives you the Minnie Mouse ear look}…
  10. Add a good holding hairspray {optional}.
  11. Lastly, add a bow at the base of one ear {I prefer to add it to the ear that looks the least perfect}…
  12. Enjoy your Minnie Mouse Buns for a day at a Disney park or Disney-themed party!

Not-So-Hidden-Mickey | Disney Hairstyles

September 06, 2013

Working with the style team at Disney IMG, we decided to give you fun a tutorial today on a cute hairstyle that can be worn to the Disney theme parks!

In every hairstyle video we create for Disney, my girls have been hiding a Mickey Mouse somewhere in the shot that fans can spot and comment when they find it. Our fans are having so much fun with these “Hidden Mickey’s” that we thought it would be fun to do a not-so-hidden Mickey as hairdo!

Mickey Mouse HairThis hairstyle really is not complicated at all. If you can tie a simply ponytail, and wrap it into a bun… that is all you need to know!

Simply follow the step-by-step instructions below, and watch the video tutorial and you are all set!

Mickey Mouse Hairstyle

Mickey Mouse Hair

Mickey Mouse Hair

I guarantee that your daughter will receive compliments all day in the park, and other children are running around trying to spot the Hidden Mickey’s!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 3 hair bands, 3 hair elastics {matching hair}, and 3-6 bobby pins.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by dividing hair down the middle from forehead to crown…
  2. Now part from crown down to each ear {this will give you three sections of hair. The bottom section which should have about ½ the hair in it, and 2 sections on top that contain approximately ¼ of the total hair in each}…
  3. Secure the top two sections into ponytails, both of which need to be gathered as close to the inner corner as possible…
  4. Now gather and secure the bottom ponytail with a hair band as well, as top centered as you can get it {remember we want this to look like Mickey’s head with two ears, so the eventual buns must be touching each other}…
  5. Now take the bottom ponytail and and wet it down {or optionally use pomade}, then twist the ponytail until it wants to turn into itself, and allow it to coil/wrap itself around the rubber band base.  This should create a flat cinnamon bun effect…
  6. Use a hair elastic to secure this bun around the base, being sure your ends are tucked in {feel free to use a bobby pin to tie in any stragglers}…
  7. Repeat Steps #5-6 on the top two ponytails…
  8. Your buns will likely not be touching, becuase of how the hair works with parts, etc, so please use bobby pins to pin the buns together.  Do your best to get them to form the Mickey silhouette, and still hide the pins.
  9. Add hairspray, if desired.
  10. Optional: Add a red-with-white-polka-dots bow between the ears to create a super cute Minnie Mouse bun!

Please feel free to leave me a comment below letting us know what you think of this new hairstyle!  Are there any other Disney-inspired hairstyles you would like to see?

As always, if you loved this hairstyle, please feel free to share it!

Want to become CGH braid certified??? Simply tag your own photo of this braid with #CGHBoxFishtail on Instagram! Don’t forget that you can follow us on Instagram, too!

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

I do get a ton of emails every day, and although it is impossible to respond to them all… I want you to know that I read each and every one!

Just a few weeks ago, a fan, Kendra from Canada, submitted a hairstyle photo of her own creation and it BLEW my mind!

Box {4-Sided} Fishtail Braid | Cute BraidsWe think this braided hairstyle will be a big hit with our fans, because it is so unique and you can do so much with it!  We wanted to be sure to credit Kendra here!

Yes, this is a fishtail braid… however it is a fishtail braid on FOUR sides of the ponytail!

The front and back of the braid have a regular fishtail pattern, while the right and left sides have a reverse fishtail pattern!  {Watch the braid closely when I spin Brooklyn around in the chair at the end to see the cool effect!}

Here you can learn how to fishtail braid.
Here you can learn how to reverse fishtail braid.

To recreate this look, you combine alternating double stitches of a fishtail braid with a reverse fishtail.  The step-by-step directions are below.

You can also use this Box Fishtail braid hairstyle in a beautiful updo by simply twisting the braid up into itself.  This will create a magnificent-looking bun that your friends will be seriously fawning over!

Box {4-Sided} Fishtail Braid | Cute Braids Box {4-Sided} Fishtail Braid | Cute Braids Box {4-Sided} Fishtail Braid | Cute Braids

The ponytail version of this braid is perfect for sports, cheer, or every day wearing.  The bun version of this hairstyle would be perfect for ballet, a wedding, Homecoming, Prom, or any other occasion!

You’ll LOVE this braid hairstyle as you receive compliments all day long!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1-2 hair band/ponytail holders, 1 small hair elastic, 1 bobby pin, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 8-12 minutes

Skill Level: Medium {only because it is time consuming and your arms get tired!}

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by brushing the hair and securing it into a high ponytail with a hair band…
  2. Now, divide the ponytail into two large strands…
  3. Take a small piece of hair from the outside-left edge of the left strand, cross it over that strand and add it to the inside of the right strand…
  4. Next, take a small piece of hair from the outside-right edge of the right strand, cross it over the that strand and add it to the inside of the left strand {this completes the first full stitch of a regular fishtail braid}…
  5. Repeat Steps #3 & 4 to create a second complete stitch of a fishtail braid…
  6. Now, take a small piece of hair from the outside-left edge of the left strand, cross it under the that strand, and add it to the inside of the right section…
  7. Take a small piece of hair from the outside-right edge of the right strand, cross it under that strand, and add it to the inside of the left section {you have just created one complete stitch of a reverse fishtail braid}…
  8. Repeat Steps #6 & 7 to create a second complete stitch of a reverse fishtail braid. {Please make sure that when you add the pieces to the middle, that they stay in the middle. You do not want these pieces migrating to the outside and being used too soon or the fishtail pattern will not look correct.}
  9. Repeat Steps #3-8 by creating alternating two regular fishtail stitches, and then two reverse fishtail stitches, over and over again until you run out of hair…
  10. When you reach the end of the braid, secure the hair ends with an elastic.
  11. You may choose to wrap a small strand of hair around the elastic to hide it, by using a bobby pin.
  12. {Optional: Gently twist the braid until it wraps around itself to create a very beautiful and intriguing braided bun.}
  13. Add hairspray and accessories as needed.

Double-Twist Bun Updo | Homecoming Hairstyles

August 29, 2013

Note from Mindy: Now all of the images on this site are “pin-able” on Pinterest!  All you have to do is hover your pointer over the photo and you will see a red-and-white “Pin It” button on the top left corner of it!  If you click that button, you can  immediately pin that hairstyle photo onto your Pinterest boards!  Now you have an easier reference spot for all your favorite CGH styles!

Yes, it is football season again and many teen girls are already planning their Homecoming Dance hairstyles and dresses!

Some of my twins’ older friends are already asking them for hairstyle ideas!  Bailey in particular has loved wearing her hair up lately, and she is so loving this specific twisted updo hairstyle that we created years ago, but never filmed a tutorial for it.

Double Twist Bun Updo | Homecoming HairstylesThis updo hairstyle really is not complicated at all, and I only classify it at a medium skill level because getting the bun in the back to secure can be a little tricky.  I have found that Goody Spin Pins work well, and then I use a few extra bobby pins to take care of any of the loosies!  You can find Spin Pins at your local Walmart or Target.

This updo hairstyle can be worn by women and girls of all ages, for pretty much any occasion other than sports.  The style looks very beautiful for more formal events like dances, weddings, or church, especially when accessorized with hair jewelry or flowers!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, 2-3 Goody Spin Pins, 2-3 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5-7 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair {either wet or dry, depending on the look you want} straight down the middle of head, and secure one section out of the way…
  2. On your first side, the very front of the hair, separate a small section of hair into two strands and begin a basic twist…
  3. After twisting the pieces together once, add in some hair from the bottom into the bottom strand, and twist again…
  4. Then add in more hair into the bottom strand, and twist again…
  5. Continue this process along the hairline until you run out of hair near the nape of the neck…
  6. When you reach the nape of the neck, begin a rope twist {see next step for explanation} with the two strands…
  7. To Rope Twist:  Twist both strands in the same direction.  When the hair is nice and tight, twist the two strands together in the opposite direction.
  8. When you are done with the rope twist, secure it with an elastic…
  9. Repeat Steps #2-7 on the other side of the head…
  10. Now take one of the rope braids and twist it up like a cinnamon roll onto itself…
  11. Using Goody Spin Pins, and/or bobby pins, secure the bun in place…
  12. Repeat Steps #10-11 with the second rope twist, and adjust the bun with bobby pins as necessary.
  13. Add hairspray or hair accessories as desired.

Lace Braided Bun | Cute Updo Hairstyles

July 28, 2013

For VidCon Attendees: Saturday from 3-3:30pm in YouTube’s Fan Booth at the Anaheim Convention Center.

For Non-Vidcon Attendees: Outside of Tortilla Joe’s {at Downtown Disney in Anaheim} on Saturday from 5-6:00pm. Come meet us, take pictures, and the first 20 fans will receive a free CGH vintage t-shirt! Who knows, maybe the twins will sign them!

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

I have been trying so hard to perfect this braided bun for two months now! I never could get it secured the way I wanted it, and this week I finally figured out a trick to getting the braid and bun to look perfect!

Lace Braid Bun | Cute UpdosIf you have practiced our Lace Braid tutorials, this updo will be a so easy for you!

The trick for me was to isolate out a small strand of hair before placing the bun maker into the hair. This strand is very important, and serves as your base to anchor the lace braid.

The style holds up nicely throughout the day, and is a perfect updo for Prom or Homecoming, or to be worn casually on any other day! I love hairstyles like that!  It is one I would wear to work, and even the gym!

CGH#3 volunteered to be my model, and isn’t she adorable? She wore it to church today, and I noticed several of the young women commenting on it!

I guarantee this one will get you compliments, as well!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 bun maker, 1 large hair band, 1 small hair elastic, 2-3 Goody Spin Pins, 2-3 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by pulling hair up into a high ponytail, and secure with a hair band…
  2. Separate a small section of a hair {about ½ inch} out of the ponytail, in the back behind the right ear, and let it fall while you hold onto the rest of the ponytail….
  3. Slip the ponytail hair through the bun maker, and snug it down against the head, making sure the sectioned piece stays out of the bun maker {actually, the bun maker should sit right on top of it}…
  4. Now, let go of the ponytail, an let the hair fall evenly over the bun maker {try to make sure it is all even all the way around, and that hair evenly covers all of the bun maker}…
  5. Comb out any tangles or fly-aways around the bun, to help make the bun look perfect and silky…
  6. Now gently part the back hair and find the strand that you intentionally left out…
  7. With this strand, begin to create a 3-strand Dutch braid with it {as you braid, add fallen hair from the bun maker into the top strand only… this creates the Lace Braid}…
  8. As you continue braiding, make your way around the base of the bun, adding hair into only the top strand, and keeping the braid tight near the base of the bun maker…
  9. When you have braided all the way around the bun, meeting where you began, continue a simple 3-strand braid down the remainer of hair, and secure with a small hair elastic…
  10. Now, take the tail portion of the braid and tuck it around and under the main braid. It should all fit fairly well under the main braid.  {If you do have a few problem areas, where the braid doesn’t fit well, feel free to tug the top braid down a bit and secure with a bobby pin}. Do you best to make it look like one continuous braid around the bun…
  11. You will want to use bobby pins to secure the main braid against the head.

Please feel free to leave me a comment below letting us know what you think!  As always, if you loved this hairstyle, please feel free to share it!

Happy Hairdoing!

Also, don’t forget my twins’ video this week on their YouTube channel! Bailey was sick, so Brooklyn asked me to step in for her to show you some cute, coming trends for this school year!
