Loony Braids | Crazy Hairstyles

September 01, 2010

This is a fun braided hairstyle we have used for a few years now, a hairdo which my girls creatively call Loony Braids. This particular one uses a 3-strand technique, but there is also a 4-strand version which is very cute (posted on our  Facebook Page by a fun mom name Julie about a month ago).  I am hoping to post a video tutorial of that braid very soon…

Loony Braids (side)

This is one of those braided hairstyles that is perfect for a teenager as well because the style is unique enough not be seen as little Laura Ingalls-ish.  The braid needs to be done fairly tight (although popular braid styles today are worn fairly loose) because if it is not, the smaller strands cannot grip the larger one… causing you to lose the creative bends throughout the day.

Loony Braids (Front)

Items Needed: Spray bottle, rat-tail comb, 2 hairbands, accessories (as desired).

Time Requirement: 5-10 Minutes

Skill Level: Medium

4th of July Hairstyle: Star Twists

July 03, 2010

I had promised a few 4th of July hairstyles, but I just have not had as much time as I need to get them filmed. I did get this one on today.

Star Twists Back

Star Twist Front

Many of you will recognize the base hairstyle as one featured on Good Things Utah in June. The base hairstyle is called Holiday Twists, but the variation I demonstrate below uses about 1/3 of each ponytail to draw the lines of a star on top of the head.

4th of July Hairstyles

Items Needed: Rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 10 hairbands, pomade, ribbon or pipe cleaners (if desired as accents).

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Easter Hairstyles: Bunny-Ear Pigtails

April 02, 2010

* Note from Mindy: Don’t forget to check our Easter Hairstyles post for some cute styles for this weekend!

We received a request for “Bunny Ears” on Facebook after we posted the Egg Tails Hairstyle the other day.  I laughed it off for a second, but this morning decided to give it an honest try!  I have seen people do this hair style with braids, so I decided to more for a pixie-like bunny look (smaller ears)…

Items Needed: 4 ponytail rubber bands, two small rubber bands, 4 “large” bobby pins, Got2be blasting freeze spray, 2 Easter colored ribbons.

Time Requirement: 5-7 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

You can make the ears longer so that they flop down more, as desired, so that there is not much loose hair hanging down.  If you do this, you will certainly want to braid the hair so that the loop will hold.  Here is the video tutorial.

Happy Easter!

Our Crazy Hair Day…

March 26, 2010

This past Monday was Crazy Hair Day at the kids’ charter school. You can see a picture of the hairstyles we came up with above. I have some pretty good ones on this site, but wanted to try some new hair styles.  They were pretty CRAZY, alright! One DD even won first place in her grade!   (Warning:  Crazy Hair Day always requires the use of tons of gel and hairspray!!!)

Our oldest daughter wanted a hairdo like a Who from Whoville.  I saw this style at a community play of “Horton Hears a Who” and recently received a photo from a loyal follower, Julie, with a very similar look.  Here is what we came up with…

Our second daughter found this crazy picture online and wanted something similar. It was impossible to recreate, so here’s what we came up with…

Our daughter #3, my little one who loves the “Bun Hawk” so much, wanted a mohawk with spikes!  Here is what her hairstyle looked like…

So there you have this year’s versions for Crazy Hair Day!  Please click Crazy Hair Day to see hairdo’s from past years.

Happy Hairdoing!

XO Valentine's Day Hairstyle

February 13, 2010

Here is my last Valentine’s Day hairstyle for 2010, and it requires a little bit of “creativity” to see it! It is a little out there… so I did this on my #3 daughter last week as a test to see if people at school could figure it out, and everyone did.  In fact, some of her teachers took pictures.  It took a bit of practice to get it, so I explain some of what I learned in the video tutorial below.  Here it is…

XO (Hug & Kiss) Hairstyle

Items Needed:  Brush, comb, spray bottle, 5 elastic bands, and 3 ribbons

Time Requirement:  20 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Also, don’t forget our other Valentine’s Day Hairdo’s!  Be sure to email photos of your V-Day do’s or simply post them to our Facebook page!

Enjoy, and Happy Hairdoing!
