Romantic and Edgy 2-in-1 Side Swept Look | with Kandee Johnson

February 24, 2013

We are so happy to introduce you to a YouTube icon, and a good friend of mine, KandeeJohnson!  {You can also find more of her on Kandee’s blog.} She is one of the most influential makeup gurus on YouTube, and a fellow mommy, too {four children}!

Romantic or Edgy Side Swept Hairstyles with Kandee JohnsonWe want to give our sincere thanks to Kandee for helping us with this collaboration and for being such a wonderful friend!

For this hairstyle tutorial, we wanted to show you two different side-swept looks, romantic and edgy, that are equally beautiful using my twins as models.

The first look on CGH#2 is more like something you would see on Taylor Swift, and the second on CGH#1 like something Rihanna would wear.

Over on Kandee’s channel, she shows us how to complete the looks by applying each girls’ makeup to match the hairstyle. You can watch her video here

Here’s how to get each hairstyle:

Romantic Side-Swept Hairstyle

Items Needed: Curling wand, brush, 3-5 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}, and a headband, if you want to accessorize.

Time Requirement: 10 minutes (curl time included)

Skill Level: Easy

Taylor Swift Side-Swept Hairstyle

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by curling your hair to your liking {You can use a wand, curling iron, rollers, or a no-heat curling method.  I did tighter curls for this look, think Taylor Swift curls, to give it more of a romantic and girly feel}…
  2. Do a deep, side part and sweep your hair behind your head to the other side and let lay over your shoulder {we left her bangs down on her forehead and swooped them to the side as well.  We also left a few bangs out on the opposite side of her face.  Leaving the bangs on the face softens the look and adds to the romantic feel}…
  3. Using bobby pins, begin to pin the hair so that is stays sitting over your shoulder {it took about 4 bobby pins for me.  Make sure you cross your bobby pins for extra security, and don’t panic if you cannot hide the bobby pins perfectly.  On this style you will likely see the bobby pins, so make sure you use bobby pins that match your hair color}…
  4. Add hairspray the hair to give it a little more structure and hold…
  5. To finish the look, I added a flower headband on CGH#2 that is super cute and something that Taylor Swift would likely wear with this hairstyle. {You can find the headband on Etsy.}

Don’t you agree that this hairstyle would look adorable with a cute summer sun dress?  Side-swept hairstyles are “in” right now, so I expect to see a lot of these when the weather gets warmer!

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

Edgy Side Swept Hairstyle

Items Needed: Curling wand, brush, teasing brush or comb, 3-4 bobby pins, and 1 hair elastic.

Time Requirement:  10 minutes (with curl time)

Skill Level: Easy

Rihanna Side-Swept Hairstyle

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by curling your hair to your liking {you can use a wand, curling iron, rollers, or a no-heat curling method.  I used a curling wand, but I made very loose, soft curls so that it looked a little more natural and less styled}…
  2. Do a deep side part and begin to tease your hair to add volume and fullness on the top and side.  Remember this is an edgy look so you want lots of volume.  We even teased her bangs up and over to give a more dramatic look…
  3. Once you have teased the hair, sweep it all behind the head and over the opposite shoulder…
  4. Then, pick up a section of hair behind the ear {the side without the hair} and begin a small simple braid…
  5. Braid it downward around the back of the head and let it fall near the nape of your neck…
  6. Secure the end of the braidwith an elastic for added security.
  7. Now, using bobby pins, begin to pin the hair so that is stays sitting over your shoulder.  It took about 4-6 bobby pins for me.  {This may be  a little harder to pin because you are also pinning the braid.  Make sure you cross your bobby pins for extra security and do not panic if you cannot hide the bobby pins perfecty.  On this style, you will also still likely see the bobby pins so make sure you use bobby pins that match your hair color.}
  8. Add hairspray the hair to give it a little more structure and hold.

Don’t you agree that this look would be great with some jeans or cut-off shorts, a cute skeleton or print t-shirt, and red nails?

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

October 21, 2012

The hairstyle for this week is sure to be a popular one, since so many women are reluctant to use too much heat in their hair. The golden question with using no heat is… how do you obtain gorgeous curls without it???

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

First, I want to give a huge shout-out to Intermountain Moms on Facebook! They have a program similar to Dial-a-Nurse, only they use pure social media to help us moms!

Nurse Dani at IntermountainMoms was able to help me this last week know when we should take CGH#1 to the doctor after she fractured her wrist during gymnastics… she saved me approx $150 for an x-ray that would have been too early to tell! {It is fractured, BTW. *sad*} They also have daily giveaways there, so be sure to enter! {My friend won a 1-month supply of diapers in August!}

Well, we have already shown you how to create No-Heat Headband Curls, and we have shown you how to make No-Heat Sock Curls.

How about another cute no-heat curling technique???

This version uses a technique we call Cocooning, yes, cocooning as in a caterpillar turning into a butterfly!

Since it uses a knot to, they style only provides curl on the bottom 2/3 of the hair, so I find that a headband or hat is the perfect accessory for this hairstyle! {You might also pull the hair up into a hair-wrapped ponytail, which will wonderfully show off those gorgeous curls!}

These cocoon curls also last for a few days, so you can combine these curls as a 2nd or 3rd day ‘do using any of our accent braids, twists, etc!

Rather than try an explain the steps here, it is better for you to watch the video tutorial below… it will be much easier to follow that way…

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bandana, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 15-20 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Happy Hairdoing!

Money Curls | With Guests Michelle Money & Laura Armstrong

September 02, 2012

I know you are going to love this week’s tutorial!

We are so happy to introduce two special guests for this video with Michelle Money (from ABC’s “The Bachelor” and runner up on “Bachelor Pad”) and her best friend/YouTube partner Laura Armstrong.

Michelle Money Curls | Cute Hairstyles

Many of you will recognize Michelle as a reality star, but did you also know that Michelle is a licensed cosmetologist?  She has even offered to do a new cut and color on me soon!  Laura is also a professional esthetician, and has a great knowledge of all things skin and beauty!

Some of you may be wondering how I came to know these two lovely ladies, so I will tell you the story…

I was sitting in my car waiting for gymnastics to end with CGH#4 and looked over to see Michelle waiting in the car next to me.  I mustered up enough courage to go over and strike up a conversation with her.  {She was so nice and did not seem as stand off-ish as many reality stars do!}  In the process of our conversation, Michelle mentioned that she has a YouTube channel called the MMandLShow.  I mentioned that my daughters and I also have a Youtube channel, and from there… the idea to do a collaboration video was born!

Of course I had to go home that night and check out their channel and quickly found myself watching many of their videos.  I was intrigued by many of their hair-curling techniques {especially for more adult looking curls} and have been using some their techniques for months now on my own hair!  I also loved many of their beauty secrets and one video in particular caught my eye {which I will detail in the next section}.

So I decided to meld the two together and film for you a beauty tip from the girls AND Michelle’s secret to her gorgeous curls for which she is widely known!

Beauty Tip: The PMD (Mersonal Microdermabrasion)

I’ll just be honest here… Michelle is as beautiful in real life as she is on TV, probably even more!   When I saw her in person, I immediately was curious how she obtained such fabulous skin!  So, of course my attention was peaked when I stumbled onto a video by both Laura and Michelle talking about their “magic skin secret”… the PMD Personal Microdermabrasion tool!

PMD | Personal Microdermabrasion

I was curious enough that I ended up finding one myself and trying it out!

I’m happy to report that I’ve now been using it for about 3 months and I absolutely LOVE it!!!  I simply incorporated it into my skin care regiment for once a week.  It really does leave my skin feeling sooooo smooth, soft, and less wrinkly!

For those of you not familiar with the PMD, it essentially buffs the top layer of dead skin away which then gives your skin a more soft, younger looking, and fresh look.  You will find that it helps control fine lines, wrinkles, big pores, and even some acne scarring.

Once I had tried it, and decided I loved it on my skin, I thought I would try it on my daughter’s skin. She is almost 13, and doesn’t have fine lines or wrinkles yet… but she is getting some of that normal teenage acne on her forehead and nose.  I thought I would just test it out on her as well to see if the PMD would help with the acne.  I was enthusiastically surprised when it did!  Not that it cleared up her acne 100%, but I can tell that it removed some of the worst dead skin and pore-clogging oils from the surface and allowed her acne cream to absorb better.

When using the PMD, make sure you view the accompanying instructional DVD first, to avoid damaging the skin.

I’m sure you will love this little secret! After I started telling people about how much I liked it, I was surprised to learn how many other people I know are already using it!  Hahahaha… I guess I am on the “slow boat ” with this one!  Other YouTubers like AndreasChoice, MissGlamorazzi, Elle Fowler’s AllThatGlitters21, etc, have all been talking about it already!

If you decide you want to try the PMD, as I have done, you can do so by visiting the PMD Website here.  If you enter the coupon code CuteGirlsHairstyles, then you can receive 25% off of your order!  Thank you, PMD!

Hair Technique: Michelle Money Curls

Michelle Money | Hair Curling Techniques

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, flat iron, 1 inch or 1 ¼ inch curling iron {we used Hot Tools brand}, hairspray, dry shampoo, and pomade

Time Requirement: Approximately 30 minutes {depending on amount of hair}

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin with clean, dry hair and flat iron the hair beforehand {This is Michelle’s secret trick… even flat ironing the bottom 6 inches of hair will work}…
  2. Separate hair into small sections starting with hair closest to neck and working up. Take smaller sections of hair, about a 2 inch square, and spray with hair spray…
  3. Work hair around the barrel of curling iron, but leave out the last 2-3 inches of hair.  This will keep the ends looking flat a provide the more messy, “tousled look” that everyone wants right now…
  4. Continue to curl hair all over head in the same manner.  Your goal is to create curls that are less tight-spiral looking and more like a loose bend.  {This technique just provides a more natural, sophisticated look.}
  5. Use a flat iron to give bangs {if you have them} a quick pull and flip the ends out ever so slightly… you want your bangs to blend into the hair on the sides of the head.
  6. Use a dry-shampoo spray at the roots, and around your hairline.  This will prevent oil buildup over the next few days and will create texture and volume in the hair.
  7. Using pomade, run a little dab through your fingertips and then onto the ends of your hair to control flyways.
  8. Last but not least… LOVE your new look!

This hairstyle may take a little more time, depending on your length of hair, but it will create an amazing look that will last for several days!  Believe it or not, the curls will actually get better looking as the days go on.  In this video, Michelle’s were already three days old, and I wore this style for 4 days before washing again and it looked great!

Enjoy, and Happy Hairdoing!

Pin Coil {Curl} Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

August 27, 2012

We wanted to teach you a fun way to accent any number to hairstyles, and can accent a style for any number of occasions.

Pin Curl Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

You can use pin coils to accent a simple hairdo, add variety to a basic messy bun, dress up a formal occasion, or even just match a cute outfit!   In the video below, I used the pin coils to accent basic beachy waves and also to accent a simply messy bun.  Either way looks great!

I’ve also had fans comment that you can use the coils to cover ponytail holders on a basic ponytail, create a headband, or create amazing day-2 waves in your hair.

Many of you may remember your mother or grandmother making overnight “pin curls” using this same method to created beautiful next-day curls.  That is where I got this accent idea!

Pin Curl Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

Pin Curl Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

You may also use these accents as a very fun way to dress up an updo for Prom or Homecoming, since these pin coils are easy to form and look very much like rosettes!

Your possibilities really are endless!  Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, 3-4 small bobby, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by determining where you want your cluster of Pin Curls…
  2. Then, grab a 1-inch section of hair and twist it around your 2nd and 3rd fingers to create a coil shape…
  3. Gently slide the coil of hair off of your fingers and lay it flat against your head…
  4. Take a bobby pin and secure the coil against your head.  {Do your best to hide the bobby pin.  See note below…}
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you form your desired, cute cluster of coils.  I created three coils in this video, but you can do four, five, or even a whole headband of coils.
  6. Get creative… and enjoy!

* Note from Mindy:  To make the bobby pins less noticeable, try using the mini bobby pins that match the color of your hair.  {In this tutorial, I used large “blonde” pins so you could see what I was doing.} You can also “weave” the bobby pins through the coil in an up and down manner to help hide them.  Using decorative bobby pins with little jewels can also add a little flair.

Happy Hairdoing!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Special Guest

April 17, 2012

Several months ago we uploaded our 1st version of the Katniss Braid, long before the movie came out. The movie was a blockbuster smash, and everyone was amazed at the hairstyles seen throughout the film!

Right after the premier, Linda Flowers, the lead hairstylist on The Hunger Games movie set, began searching the internet to see what people were saying about her hairstyles.

In fact, Linda was so amazed at how the Katniss Braid was becoming a “symbol”, so much that teen girls worldwide and their friends were wearing the braid to see the movie in theaters! She found us on YouTube and recognized that CuteGirlsHairstyles had a huge hand in helping teach literally thousands of our fans how to do the braid!

As such, Linda reached out to us and offered to give me a personal tutorial of the many Hunger Games hairstyles over Skype!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

During our tutorial, I quickly saw that the Katniss braid had a little more prep work to it than I had originally thought! Linda showed me how she added the texture into Jennifer Lawrence’s hair “before” she created the Katniss braid {something I had not figured out}.

She uses a tool called the TopStyler® {by InStyler®} to add volume and stranded twists into the diagonal Dutch braid. From the leaked photos prior to the premier, many thought that there was maybe one more strand added into the braid… and this was the reason why. You can see exactly how to create this texture by viewing the tutorial below.

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

I appreciate that the TopStyler uses a slow and uniform transfer heat to curl the hair, rather than the immediate super hot heat a curling wand provides that only heats the outside of the strand. It also allows for the curl to stay in much longer.

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

This is the exact look Katniss wore throughout the arena scenes in the movie, taught to CuteGirlsHairstyles personally by the one who created it… Linda Flowers! Hope you enjoy it!

{You can find the TopStyler at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ulta, or Amazon online.}

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, hairspray, TopStyler, 1 hairband, quiver of arrows {optional}

Time Requirement: 30 minutes {approximately, including heat time}

Skill Level:  Hard

If you enjoyed this tutorial, please feel free to Facebook share it, tweet it, pin it, “whatever-you-want” it!

Happy Hairdoing!
