Katniss Reaping Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

Last weekend we filmed two Hunger Games Hairstyles based solely upon a few good photos we could find online, this one and the Prim Braids. {A few months ago we posted the famous Katniss Braid, the one she wears in the arena.}
We saw the THG movie Friday night, loved it, and we were happy that our hairstyles were fairly true to form!
We were also excited to receive an email from Linda Flowers, the Lead Stylist on set for The Hunger Games movie who had seen our hairstyles on YouTube and wanted to let us know that she liked them and that she wants to Skype me for a personal tutorial with her! I am so0000 EXCITED!!!
For this hairstyle worn by Katniss during “The Reaping” scene in the movie, you basically follow the same steps as we showed in the Prim Braids for the two French-backs into normal braids. The only difference is that you “fold in” and pin the lower braids into a flat, low bun.
The result is super cute, and sure to get you compliments!

The Bun Hawk | Crazy Hair Day Hairstyles

After filming our segment on the Anderson Cooper show, Anderson stopped by the Green Room to visit with our little girls. He did not have to do that, as he had another show to film and CNN lineup later that evening!
Anderson was so nice to them, and really made my girls feel like a million dollars! Not that I wasn’t a huge fan of his shows before {going back to Channel One with Lisa Ling}… but I am extremely loyal now for that reason alone! If you have not seen the Anderson talk show, I recommend that you do so!
My six-year old was in a particularly “goofy” mood, having an hilarious time teasing Anderson!
I quickly grabbed my iPhone and caught the tail end of their conversation as she told Anderson that he should get a mohawk! He laughed and said, “Sure!” We included the clip in the tutorial below…
Luckily for us, we had just filmed this Bun Hawk hairstyle a week ago!
Many of our fans have been requesting this hairstyle, since so many schools are having Crazy Hair Day at school! We had a very old tutorial in photos on the site, but a video certainly makes the hairstyle easier to follow!
You may also remember that this was my hubby’s first contribution to our hairstyle repertoire, as this was his idea!
This hairstyle uses the bantu knot technique to form the hawk part of the hairdo. This is so easy to do and will guarantee comments all day long!
We use this style a lot when our girls are playing sports, because not only does it garner lots of attention… but it intimidates a little as well! The girls also wear this to 80′s parties, along with Crazy Hair Day. It could be a fun gymnastics style, too!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 10 hair bands, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5-10 minutes
Skill Level: Easy
Steps:
- Start with wet, brushed hair…
- Section the hair and make five ponytails down the center of the head… starting with a section in front and work your way back, secure them with bands. {Make sure that the hair in the ponytails are as equal as possible, so that the buns are relatively the same size.}
- Take the first ponytail and being twisting the hair strand until it wants to twist around itself, gently allowing it to twist around the ponytail holder into a bun, and secure with another hairband.
- Repeat Step 3 for the other four ponytails.
- Lightly spritz hairspray to help secure any flyways.
{If you have problems with thin hair or baby flyways, you may want to try a little pomade or hair fiber gum to help hold in the twisty buns, but this is completely optional.}

Many of you will recognize this hairstyle as one of the first hairdo’s we ever published, but we never have filmed a video for it.
Since we do receive quite a few requests via email asking for this video, as sometimes photo tutorials are not specific enough, we decided to film this one for you all!
We love how super easy this hairstyle is to do, and how cute it looks on our little girls. The style still works well on older girls, and moms as well, particularly if you pancake the braids into a more “loose” style.
We promise that you will get compliments on this hairstyle all day long! {My twins started calling this braided hairstyle “The Pineapple Braid” from the time they were very little, which I also think is cute because the finished hairstyle does look quite a bit like a pineapple!}
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 5 clear elastics, 2 regular
hair bands, and hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 8-10 minutes
Skill Level: Easy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by wetting hair {if desired} with the spray bottle.
- Gather all hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck…
- Divide the hair in the ponytail into 5 equal sections…
- Braid each of the 5 sections separately, using a clear elastic to temporarily hold them {or you can also have your daughter hold them instead}…
- Once all 5 sections are braided, grab them together at the base and fold them up towards the ponytail…
- Secure the folded braids to the ponytail with a hair band, leaving the ends of the braid loose…
- Tease the loose hair ends to your liking.
- Add in hairspray or a ribbon/accessory {if desired}.

If you are like me, you’ve noticed that everyone in Hollywood {in TV, movies, etc.} is talking about the comeback of braid hairstyles.
Simply flip through magazines, catalogs, or beauty websites and see them there, too! Everyone is wearing braids and the best thing is that there are a million ways to wear them!
One of my very favorite braided hairstyles uses a small, added flair to a simple braid… what everyone is calling a Simple Messy Braid. This is the perfect second-day hairstyle {after curls the day prior} for a quick rush out the door.
I’ve received so many emails requesting a video for this hairstyle. One of our most loyal fans even asked 10+ friends to all email me within a few hours each asking for this style! I swear we have the best fans! Well, it definitely got my attention and my girls and I decided to make this our next tutorial.
Items Needed: Brush, comb, ponytail holder, hairspray {if desired}
Time Required: 2 minutes
Skill Level: Easy
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin with dry slightly messy or curly hair. {You can use a flat iron or wand to add a little curl to the top layer if needed}.
- Pull all hair loosely to one side, over your shoulder.
- Braid the hair using the regular braiding method.
- Tug on the “elbows” of the braid to loosen/flatten and soften the braid. This is called “pancaking” the braid.
- Curl any loose pieces of hair to frame your face. Remember, the braid is supposed to be messy!
- Bobby pin any problem strands into place, and you are good to go!
