Cross-Braid Sock Bun | Updo Hairstyles

Tonight I want to introduce you to, EveliniCutza, a YouTube Beauty Guru with whom we have had a friendship for over two years now! I originally found out about Evelina when she created a YouTube video response to our popular Waterfall Braid tutorial.
Evelina is from Moldova, and not only is she beautiful but she is very creative, too! I know that you will enjoy her channel, just as we do!
As a treat to all of you, we posted two videos to YouTube tonight. This one, and another that you will see here on Wednesday night.
Here I show you {using Evelina as my model} how to create a gorgeous sock bun updo, with crossed micro-braid accents. The best thing about this updo, is that you can complete it in under 5 minutes!
This hairstyle is perfect for occasions such as Prom, Homecoming, a wedding, ballet, or any other formal event! {However, this does not stop me from wearing this style in a more dressed down look!}
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 sock bun form, 2 small hair elastics, 2 large hair bands, 2-4 bobby pins, and hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by sectioning off two small square sections of hair about the size of a pencil in thickness, on the back of the head behind the ears…
- Braid each of these sections in a regular braid pattern and secure with elastics…
- Pull all the remaining hair up into a high ponytail, and secure with a hair band…
- Pull the ponytail hair through the bun maker, and slide the bun maker down the ponytail until it rests on the head, covering the hair band…
- Allow the hair of the ponytail to fall around the bun maker, an be sure to distribute it evenly until the bun maker is fully covered with hair…
- Place the remaining hair band over the hair and bun maker to create a perfect looking bun {there should still be hair still sticking out from under the rubber band}…
- Pick up a small section of the left-over hair and begin twisting it…
- As you twist, begin to add in hair into the twist and work your way around the entire bun until you have picked up all the hair…
- After twisting/adding in all the remaining hair, continue twisting the strand and secure the end of the twist a small rubber band…
- Continue winding the remaining twist and secure with a few bobby pins…
- Now, pick up the two micro-braids and cross them on the back of the head before before wrapping around the bun…
- Secure/tuck the ends of the braids between the twist and the bun, and bobby pin the ends into place.
- Tame flyaways with hairspray.

DIY Dutch Waterfall Braid | Cute Braided Hairstyles

Last week I showed you how to create the Dutch Waterfall Braid on my daughter…
Because it is a tricky braid to learn, and because so many fans are asking for it, this week’s tutorial will show you how to do it on your own hair {DIY}!
You can see that it is the exact exact same technique, but they key to mastering the braid is learning how to “feel” for the stranding in your own hands, and without being able to see the back of your head.
Trust me, this is a braid that everyone is going to comment on! Please do not get discouraged and give up if the braid does not turn out perfect the first time! ☺ {Practice always makes perfect!}
In last week’s tutorial, I ended my daughters Dutch Waterfall Braid with a simple braid and elastic band. In this tutorial, for a more mature look, I chose to end the braid behind my left ear using two bobby pins in a crossed pattern. Once you master the braid, you can pretty much end it in any creative way you wish!
Steps:
- I started by straightening my hair, but I really think this braid would be lovely on curly hair as well. I also teased the top of my hair to create a little extra volume {creating a more mature, softer look}…
- Begin by picking up a small section of hair where you want to start the braid {I started on the front, above the right eye}…
- Divide this small section into three strands…
- Begin a normal dutch braid. This means that the middle strand will always go OVER the outer strands {or you can say the outer strands will always go UNDER the middle strand}…
- Do one complete stitch by taking the middle strand over both outer edges once…
- You now drop the middle piece and let it fall out of the way…
- This is where it gets a little tricky… now pick up a small section of hair to add back into the braid and add it back as the MIDDLE piece. Do NOT add it as the bottom piece or the braid won’t work. You have basically just dropped the middle strand and replaced it with a new strand in the exact same location.
- Now take that middle strand and cross it over the outer bottom strand. This will create the outer edge that pops out of the braid…
- You then add hair to the top-outer strand {this is exactly what you would do with a regular Dutch braid) and cross the middle strand over that one…
- You have now just finished your second “stitch” at this point.
- Repeat steps 5-7 over and over again until you get to a point where you want to finish off the braid. I tried to create a diagnol line going from my right temple to my left ear.
- When you get about 2 inches behind your left ear, twist up a small section of hair up from the left side and clip it out of the way using an alligator clip. We will use this piece later to hide the bobby pins…
- Now take two bobby pins and pin the remainer of the braid right behind your ear {making sure to “cross” the bobby pins for added security}. Your ear will also help hide the bobby pins…
- Release the clipped hair from the clip and allow it to fall freely over the bobby pins.
- Now adjust the braid and the rest of your hair to your liking, and add hairspray {if desired}.
If you are looking to use this hairstyle to attend a wedding or school dance, you may choose to curl the falling strands with a wand!

In this hairstyle tutorial we have an exciting surprise for you all!
CGH#2 asked me if she could film a tutorial, so we decided to mix it up a bit by allowing her to teach you one of her go-to hairstyles on herself! She was so nervous to be teaching the tutorial… but you can see her courage as you watch the video! Her fans were so good to her in the comment box on YouTube… it was quite sweet!
This simple braided bun is a cute, quick style designed for young teenagers learning to do their own hair or people who need a great style in a hurry!
We especially thought of this one with swimmers {wet hair} as well as for other athletics or cheer/dance! The hairstyle is also great for “day-three” hair, which is best worn up so you can pull it back and still look good.
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 2 hair elastics, 1 rubber band, hairspray, and a few bobby pins or spin pins {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5 minutes
Skill Level: Easy
Hairstyle Steps:
- Comb all of the hair up into a high ponytail… {You will want it to sit high on the head, not on the back of your head.}
- Secure the high ponytail with a hair elastic…
- Divide the ponytail into three sections and create a simple, basic braid down to the ends of the hair…
- Secure this braid with a small elastic {preferably the same color as your hair}…
- Then twist the braid around the front of the ponytail holder to create the bun effect. {You really want the braid to lay flat against the rubberband so that the braid is featured well}…
- Once the hair is all twisted around into a bun, secure it with another hair elastic or bobbypins/spin pins. {Either way will work fine, so simply pick whatever is most comfortable for you.}…
- Add a little pop to the hairstyle by throwing on a cute headband as an accessory.

Vanellope von Schweetz, the sweet, but very spunky character from Disney’s new movie Wreck-It Ralph is sure to inspire you or your daughter next Halloween or Crazy Hair Day!
When Disney first provided us with photos, long before the movie came out, we knew it would be a challenge that my daughters and I could meet! We tried hard to keep the style true to form, and you can now see this style on Disney.com and the DisneysStyle YouTube channel.
Here’s how to get Vanellope’s deliciously-edible hairstyle…
You may need some bobby pins with a flat head and mini jaw clips. You then can hot glue the candies and fake peppermints onto the flat heads, so they stay firmly in place in the hair.
Hairstyle Steps:
- If you have bangs, part them to one side and straighten them to frame the face. {If you don’t have bangs simply pull all your hair back into the ponytail.}
- Create a high ponytail. You simply comb all the hair up to the top of the head and secure with an elastic…
- Tease the top of the ponytail to add volume and fullness…
- I tied the licorice around the ponytail holder and cut the ends short enough they stuck up a little, as seen in the movie and photos. Also you may want to use some red fluffy yarn instead of licorice, depending on whether you want to use real licorice in your hair and humidity…
- Now… have fun accessorizing the hair with an assortment of your real and/or fake treats!
Items Needed: Brush, comb, hairspray, rubberbands, and lots of treats or craft items. Some of the items we used included a 2-foot Pull-n Peel Twizzlers licorice rope, for the signature hair tie. We also used Spree candy, scrapbook pop-up dots, peppermint candies {fake}, candy buttons, etc. Flat-head bobby pins, hot glue gun.
Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
