Flipped Ends | Layered Hairstyles

Although the focus of our tutorials is on doing cute hairstyles on my girls, you can still do all the styles on yourself as well. More and more, we receive questions on how I do my own hair in the videos we film. My goal is to include more of these self hairstyles from time to time.
This straight hairstyle is easy to do. With naturally straight or straightened hair, you can alter the way it looks a bit by using a flat iron to flip the hair ends “in” or “out”. This is the most common style technique on straight hair.
When we were being filmed for YouTube’s 20/20 special, our stylist actually recommended that I flip the ends the same direction… which was something I had never thought about, but loved it! . It turned out super cute, and I receive compliments whenever I do this!
You can do this technique on short to medium hair, but with longer hair you will not benefit from the flips as much. You can also choose to back-comb some of the hair on the top to help add a little volume. I show you how to do this in the video.
{I also apologize for the clapping of the flat iron, as it is an iron that I have had for a long time. As with all hairstyles that use heat, please be sure to use a good heat protectant first.}

Double-Twist Hearts | Valentine's Day Hairstyles

*Note from Mindy: Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Let’s see how many V-day hairstyles we can get out on February 14th! Tell as many friends as you can, because we want to see thousands of little hearts walking everywhere!
There are actually two ways to finish this heart hairstyle, one by using twists as I have done (better for older girls) and the other in braids (popular with little girls). Both are equally cute and provide just a little bit different of a look.
Items Needed: Rat-tail comb, spray bottle, Topsy Tail Tool, 4 hairbands, Pomade or gel (if needed), two Valentine’s Day ribbons.
Time Requirement: 5+ minutes.
Skill Level: Easy

Since quite a few of my hairstyles use flips, many followers have been asking where they can purchase a Topsy Tail tool. It can be purchased online at Amazon (via the link), on Ebay, or locally at your Claire’s, Wal-Mart, Target, or Sally Beauty supply.
As we all know, things are not made as sturdy as they used to be years ago… in fact, many of the Topsy Tail manufacturers today make them out of cheap plastic. The problem is that if you do not loosen the ponytail enough before you use the tool, the tension while pulling the hair through causes the tool to break.
The Topsy Tail tool that I have been using is very sturdy, because it was one of the originals my mom bought back when I was a little girl. But, you simply do not have to spend $2-5 (not including shipping) online or spend hours hunting through the stores trying to find a Topsy Tail tool. We are going to show you how to make one with stuff you might already have at home!
As you can see, the one we made in the photo above is not pretty by any means… but is is very functional and will last you for forever! You can make on any size you would like, but this one is particularly for large ponytail flips. (You will need to use smaller wire to make a Topsy Tail tool for small pigtail flips on your younger daughters.)
Items Needed: Wire cutters, electrician’s tape, and a dry cleaner’s wire hanger.
Time Requirement: 5 minutes
Not only do we show you how to make the Topsy Tail tool, but we show you how easily the homemade one works on a basic ponytail flip!

Hi Ladies, I think you will love this one! This was the very first Daddy ‘Do hairstyle that my husband filmed (right before the Simple Braid tutorial we posted recently).
The style is really cute, and is actually one submitted by a follower on Facebook. What is unique about this hairstyle is that it looks far more complicated than it is!
It gives a similar look of the Fishtail Braid without having to spend alot of time doing the actual braid. All it takes is three simple flips and you are done!

The filming of this hairstyle tutorial absolutely cracked me up, because it REALLY shows how funny yet sweet it can be to have a daddy do a daughter’s hair!
First, notice how gentle he is being while trying to flip the hair, then notice how he confuses himself on how to put in a hairband… not once, but TWICE! As he misses it the second time, check out my daughter’s face! She could barely hold back her laughter (and you can hear me snickering as well)!
