Katniss’ Mockingjay Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

November 23, 2014

Many of you know that were are HUGE fans of The Hunger Games books and movie franchise!

We’ve been friends with Linda Flowers, the Department Head of Hair & Makeup for both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire movies ever since we first put up the Katniss braid years ago. Since Linda had a contract for Dancing With The Stars, she was unable to work on the Mockingjay movies, with Lionsgate instead hiring Camille Friend. Camille is just as talented, and her team did an amazing job trying to have the hair reflect the mood of the war-trodden State, as in the book.

Katniss' Braid from Mockingjay

Katniss’ braid in this 3rd movie isn’t supposed to be focused so much on style, as her time in the Capitol and in the Games merited. This time around, Panem is at war, with a growing rebellion movement, and the look is supposed to fully reflect that.

Things aren’t as they once were, and that’s why there is a fundamental change in the Katniss braid.

Katniss still wears a side braid, which as Linda told us is to ensure that she doesn’t snag her braid as she removes arrows from the quiver on her back. This time around, the wrapping braids from the left and right are French braids instead of Katniss’ signature Dutch braid.

To see your own photo recreations automatically featured in our CGH app, feel free to tag your own photos of this hairstyle on IG with: #CGHMockingjayBraid {There are already several braiders who have gained 1000’s of IG followers simply by having their recreations seen by our 350,000+ app users!}

For the side braid, the stitching looks very similar to a Simple braid, however it really is a chunky Reverse Fishtail. The look is also supposed to be somewhat messy and disheveled, which is the look we were going for. {The wind and rain in our trailer video shoot certainly helped with that!}

Items Needed: 19mm Curling Wand for the base curls, brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, 1-2 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 7-10 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by adding curls to the hair, for the base texture, using a 19mm curling wand…
  2. Part hair slightly off to the right so that heavy side of the hair is on the person’s left, then section out a few wispy strands to frame the face on both sides…
  3. Starting in front of the left-most ear pick up a section, separate it into three strands, and begin a regular French braid…
  4. Add in hair as you go along, keeping the braid as close to the hairline as possible…
  5. As you braid past the middle of the head, almost to right behind the right ear, stop adding in hair and continue with a few stitches of a regular braid and temporarily secure with an elastic…
  6. Now, on the other side of the head, pick up the hair above the right ear, and begin a regular French braid, again, following the partline…
  7. Continue this braid backwards and down until you reach the other braid…
  8. With the elastic us used temporarily to secure the first braid, now secure both braids together with that same elastic as close to the back right-most corner of the head…
  9. Next, with the combined section, divide it in half and begin a Reverse Fishtail braid…
  10. You do this by taking a sizable strand of hair from one side and take it under the hair and add it to the section on the other side…
  11. Now take a sizable strand from the left-most section, take it under that side and add it into the right section…
  12. Continue with Steps #10-11 until the reverse fishtail braid is completed…
  13. Secure with an elastic…
  14. Now go back and cut the top elastic with a pair of scissors,to loosen the hair and allow the braid to easily sit over the shoulder…
  15. Add hairspray or accessory {as desired}.

We hope you check out the rest of our Hunger Games hairstyles, and be sure come back next week for another tutorial from Mockingjay!

Prim’s Bow Braid Tieback | Catching Fire | The Hunger Games

November 24, 2013

Want to win an authentic Katniss {Jennifer Lawrence}, Peeta {Josh Hutcherson}, Finnick {Sam Claflin}, and Haymitch {Woody Harrelson} autographed “Catching Fire” book? Yes, we are giving one away next! See bottom of post for details!

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

Is that our Bow Braid Headband that you see on Primrose Everdeen {Prim} in the champion tribute reaping scene of The Hunger Games “Catching Fire”? Why, yes, it is!

Prim Bow Braid Tieback | Catching Fire | The Hunger GamesA little over a year ago, Linda Flowers, the Head Hairstylist for Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games movie franchise, called me to ask if we would mind if she used a version of our Bow Braid on a character in the move. Of course, we were thrilled!

Linda then invited us to be on set for the day they were filming the Tribute Chariot Scene. Yes, we did get to meet the stars and enjoyed consulting on hairstyles! {We will write a post about our set visit later this week.}

Today we want to show you the first official hairstyle tutorial for Prim’s Bow Braid Tieback. My third daughter is my model, and don’t you think she looks so much like Prim??? It is almost uncanny!

{We have shown you how to create a bow braid before. We have also shown you several Hunger Games hairstyle tutorials.}

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, spray wax, 1-2 small hair elastics, on large hairpin, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 10 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair off to the left side of the head, then separate down to each ear…
  2. Secure the rest {or the back} of hair with an elastic to stay out of the way…
  3. Now, create a very small section {about ¼ inch wide} that runs parallel to the original part line {keep this sectioned off by itself also, as it is the hair that you will use to create the bows later}…
  4. On the right side, begin to create a regular French braid starting near the part line and running on a slight diagonal to the ear…
  5. When you reach near the ear, stop picking up pieces of hair and end with a simple braid, and secure with an elastic…
  6. On the left side, create another French braid that mirrors the right, and secure with an elastic…
  7. Now, to create a bow braid on the right side of head, begin by pushing a hair pin through the first stitch of the braid…
  8. Take a small section of the hair from the 1/4 inch section you stored away previously and spray with hair wax…
  9. Create a loop with the hair and push it through hairpin…
  10. Now, while still holding your finger in the original loop, gently pull the hairpin back through stitch of hair, allowing a new loop to be threaded, thus creating a bow…
  11. Continue Steps #8-10 for another 4-5 bows, and let each bow end to fall to the side, which will be hid by the next bow…
  12. After finishing your bows, now take the two simple braid ends and combine them in the back of hair, in a tieback.
  13. Take out the remaining elastics from the ends of the braids, and finger comb out the rest of the braids.
  14. Add hairspray {if desired}.

Wrap-Around Prim Braid | Catching Fire | Hunger Games Hairstyles

April 14, 2013

It looks like Lionsgate has been releasing sporadic photo stills from the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire!

The one that I am most interested in shows Prim embracing Katniss right after her sister returns home from the games.

Wrap-Around Prim Braid | Catching Fire | Hunger Games HairstylesWhat I love about this photo is that it symbolizes Katniss’ promise to her younger sister that she would return to her, a promise that she kept.

The released photo shows a good side shot of a super-cute braid that Prim is wearing! The hairstyle looks like a variation of the Katniss braid, but leaving some hair down in the back. {The movie still is credited here.}

Taking a quick look at the photo, my girls and I deducted that it is a winding braid, using a lace braid technique along the partline and forehead. Then, right about the right temple, the braid turns into a Dutch braid until just behind the right ear, then back into a lace braid diagonally around the back {allowing for hair down}. The braid is then finished into a simple braid that can be worn down in the back or over the shoulder.

For another super-cute look, you could continue the diagonal braid as a Dutch braid instead of a lace braid… giving your a beautiful variation of the Katniss braid from the original movie and Catching Fire!

Get practiced up on this hairstyle, because I feel it will be one that millions of young girls will wear to see Catching Fire when it releases in November, 2013!!!  I know Brooklyn and Bailey are anxious to see it!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, curling wand, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes without texture, 10-12 minutes with curls added.

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. {Optional} You can use a TopStyler to add curls previous to braiding, which is what the Hunger Games hairstyle team uses, but I used a NuMe curling wand to add texture to the hair.
  2. Begin by creating a deep side part on the left side of the head…
  3. Pick up a small section of hair at the back left of that part, closest to the crown. Separate that section in to three smaller strands, and begin a Dutch Lace Braid.
  4. Creating a lace braid, you add in hair only on the side of the braid closest to the part line.  Continue directing the Lace Braid towards the face…
  5. As you get to within about an inch of the hair line, begin to curve the braid slightly to create a soft arc shape…
  6. As you complete the arc, just above the right temple, you will need to begin adding hair into both sides of the braid by using a few stitches of a regular Dutch braid.  This is because you will also want to incorporate the bottom hair so that it isn’t in the face…
  7. Continue the Dutch braid till you get to right above the ear…
  8. angle using the Dutch lace braid technique seen in the video.Once you reach directly above the right ear, you will want to switch back to forming a Lace Braid.  {You will only be adding hair into the top side of the braid nearer to the top of the head.}  Remember that Prim has long hair remaining below the braid that flows down her back.  Using a lace braid for the diagonal braid in the back will allow the bottom hair to remain, like a half-up/half-down hairstyle, just as in the photo.  From the top of the right ear to the bottom of the left ear, you will want to create a 45 degree angle using the Dutch lace braid technique seen in the video.
  9. When you get to the bottom of the left ear, make sure you tug the hair into the braid a little tighter, in that last stitch, to keep the hair from hanging awkwardly over the ear.
  10. Once you have gathered up all the hair into the Lace Braid, finish it off using a simple braid, and secure with a hair elastic.
  11. Spritz with hairspray, if desired.

Here is the video tutorial… enjoy!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Special Guest

April 17, 2012

Several months ago we uploaded our 1st version of the Katniss Braid, long before the movie came out. The movie was a blockbuster smash, and everyone was amazed at the hairstyles seen throughout the film!

Right after the premier, Linda Flowers, the lead hairstylist on The Hunger Games movie set, began searching the internet to see what people were saying about her hairstyles.

In fact, Linda was so amazed at how the Katniss Braid was becoming a “symbol”, so much that teen girls worldwide and their friends were wearing the braid to see the movie in theaters! She found us on YouTube and recognized that CuteGirlsHairstyles had a huge hand in helping teach literally thousands of our fans how to do the braid!

As such, Linda reached out to us and offered to give me a personal tutorial of the many Hunger Games hairstyles over Skype!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

During our tutorial, I quickly saw that the Katniss braid had a little more prep work to it than I had originally thought! Linda showed me how she added the texture into Jennifer Lawrence’s hair “before” she created the Katniss braid {something I had not figured out}.

She uses a tool called the TopStyler® {by InStyler®} to add volume and stranded twists into the diagonal Dutch braid. From the leaked photos prior to the premier, many thought that there was maybe one more strand added into the braid… and this was the reason why. You can see exactly how to create this texture by viewing the tutorial below.

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

I appreciate that the TopStyler uses a slow and uniform transfer heat to curl the hair, rather than the immediate super hot heat a curling wand provides that only heats the outside of the strand. It also allows for the curl to stay in much longer.

This is the exact look Katniss wore throughout the arena scenes in the movie, taught to CuteGirlsHairstyles personally by the one who created it… Linda Flowers! Hope you enjoy it!

{You can find the TopStyler at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ulta, or Amazon online.}

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, hairspray, TopStyler, 1 hairband, quiver of arrows {optional}

Time Requirement: 30 minutes {approximately, including heat time}

Skill Level:  Hard

If you enjoyed this tutorial, please feel free to Facebook share it, tweet it, pin it, “whatever-you-want” it!

Happy Hairdoing!

Katniss Reaping Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

March 25, 2012

Last weekend we filmed two Hunger Games Hairstyles based solely upon a few good photos we could find online, this one and the Prim Braids. {A few months ago we posted the famous Katniss Braid, the one she wears in the arena.}

Katniss Reaping Braids | Hunger Games Hairstyles

We saw the THG movie Friday night, loved it, and we were happy that our hairstyles were fairly true to form!

We were also excited to receive an email from Linda Flowers, the Lead Stylist on set for The Hunger Games movie who had seen our hairstyles on YouTube and wanted to let us know that she liked them and that she wants to Skype me for a personal tutorial with her! I am so0000 EXCITED!!!

Katniss Reaping Braids | Hunger Games Hairstyles

Katniss Reaping Braids | Hunger Games Hairstyles

For this hairstyle worn by Katniss during “The Reaping” scene in the movie, you basically follow the same steps as we showed in the Prim Braids for the two French-backs into normal braids. The only difference is that you “fold in”  and pin the lower braids into a flat, low bun.

The result is super cute, and sure to get you compliments!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, two clear elastics, several bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}

Time Requirement: 5+ minutes

Skill Level: Easy
