Messy Glow Bun | 4th of July Hairstyles

July 04, 2011

We decided to get really creative with this 4th of July hairstyle! This can be done for any national celebration (July 4th, Canada Day, Australia Day, or for New Year’s Eve, etc.)

About six months ago I was surfing around the internet for fun hair accessories when I stumbled upon a really fun site. It is where I learned about Glowby’s! {Be sure to use coupon code CUTEGIRL10 to receive 10% off of all orders!}

I loved the fiber-optic concept and that you do not have to have a stack of AA batteries stuck in your hair for the lights to work. They do not get hot, and the strands can pretty much work with any style (without breaking). I decided to buy some Glowby’s and try them out.

I used our popular Messy Bun hairstyle as the base concept, and then wove in the strands of the Glowby throughout. {Luminence offers these in a variety of colors, so you can mix and match them for any holiday, or simply use white ones for weddings or formal dances.}

While we were at a fireworks display, our girls were constantly stopped and asked where we found the glow strands. We noticed plenty of people pointing to our girls, and some even wanted to take photos of the styles on their phones.

Trust us, your girls will be noticed with this style!!!

Items Needed:  Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1-2 large hair elastics, 1 Glowby.

Time Requirement: 5-10 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Now, it may look like a bear to take the Glowby out of the Messy Bun, but it really is a 2 second process. Since the strands of the Glowby are smooth plastic fiberoptics, they literally slide right out with a gentle tug on the barrette! No pain!

Hope you enjoy this style, which can be used by girls of all ages on any holiday, or by older girls and women at concerts, dance clubs, etc! Enjoy!

Happy Hairdoing,

Ribboned Bobby Pins | Tips and Tricks

February 13, 2011

This video tutorial shows a very simple way to spice up an updo hairstyle, for any holiday occasion. This one happens to be for Valentine’s Day.

Holiday Messy Bun (Back)

In this video (you can use Messy Bun #1 or Messy Bun #2), I use a thin ribbon cut into small strips (length can vary), and then tie them onto bobby pins. You can tie the ribbons into tiny bows if you would like, but I did not have time when I filmed this tutorial. If you make the ribbons longer… you can curl them by running the edge of scissors along the ribbon so that they look like curly-q’s. Then I place the bobby pins throughout the messy bun until the hair style looks right.

Holiday Messy Bun (Side)
This tip is perfect for any holiday or special occasion by using the colors of that holiday, for students or cheerleaders who want to wear school colors, and for brides/flower girls who want to accent their updo with white-ribboned bobby pins.

Tools Needed

Items Needed: 6-8 small bobby pins, thin colored ribbon, scissors

Time Requirement: 5+ minutes

Skill Level: Easy

July 4th, 2010 – Your hairstyles…

July 14, 2010

I received a cute comment  yesterday from a mom in the U.K. who said that she loved these hair styles so much that she is thinking about lobbying the head mistress at her daughter’s school to allow her daughter to celebrate the 4th of July with us!  Another joked she was writing a letter to Parliament.  Last year, a Canadian mom used one of my styles and localized it in red and white for Canada Day!  This patriotism goes for any country!

As promised, I have compiled all of your reader-submitted 4th of July hairstyles for this post. There is quite a lot of creativity in these photos, and a passion for celebrating the patriotic with hair and accessories!  Thanks, everyone, for sharing these hairstyle photos with us!!!

The submitted photos come from the following amazing ladies … Amy, Caitlin, Carrie, Dawn, Dawn K, Deena, Erin, Jennifer, Jessica, Jill, Karla, Laura, Leia, Lelah, Liz, Lynelle, Maggie Jane, Myndi, Nicole, Rachel, Sarah B, Sarah M, Shanna, Shawn, Wendi, Wendi M. {Be sure to link this post on your own blogs so that your family and friends can come here and see your photos!  Simply tell them to mouse over the photos to find your name, then click on the photo to see it enlarged. }

4th of July Hairstyle: Star Twists

July 03, 2010

I had promised a few 4th of July hairstyles, but I just have not had as much time as I need to get them filmed. I did get this one on today.

Star Twists Back

Star Twist Front

Many of you will recognize the base hairstyle as one featured on Good Things Utah in June. The base hairstyle is called Holiday Twists, but the variation I demonstrate below uses about 1/3 of each ponytail to draw the lines of a star on top of the head.

Items Needed: Rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 10 hairbands, pomade, ribbon or pipe cleaners (if desired as accents).

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes

Fourth of July Photos

August 04, 2009

I just realized that I had forgotten to post my own family photos from the Fourth of July. Yikes! I thought we all looked pretty good this year. I especially liked my little Dude’s do-rag!

I hope you will forgive the non-hair post, but my hubby and I are actually in NY this week. We have spent the last two weeks either camping, going on Trek with the youth from our church, or now in NY city. It’s been crazy but fun. School starts soon and life will have to slow down right? I hope so..

Happy Hairdoing!
