Organizing Morning Chaos | Mom Minute

May 18, 2014

For the longest time, mornings have been the hardest part of our days. Not that the carpools after school are not daunting themselves, but that to get six children ready for the day in the shortest amount of time is very… grueling!

Our Morning Routine

Today’s topic comes from a question by viewer Vicki, who asks, “What’s your family’s morning routine? How do you get so many kids ready and out the door in the morning?”

Morning Routine

I actually get asked this question a lot. Once Brooklyn and Bailey began school, we started waking up at 6 am. Yes, sometimes even 5:30. You can tell if you watch our earliest videos.

We needed that extra time to get the girls dressed, hair styled, fed an appropriate breakfast, give them time to practice the piano, pack a healthy lunch, and hold family prayer and scripture study.

As our other kids reached school age, the routine was already set and the older girls began helping with the responsibilities. Attention to logistics and time was key. It’s almost like things were running in “stations” in order to get it all done.

Today, with five children in school and two bus pick up times, we really have to run the morning efficiently or someone is going to miss the bus!

Happy Mother’s Day | Mom Minute

May 11, 2014

Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing moms out there!

I have been a mother for over 14 years now, and I have lots of Mother’s Day memories, among all the many other wonderful memories I have with my family. There is certainly more to life than hairstyles!

Mother's Day Memories

For those of you who celebrate Mother’s Day today, don’t forget to give her a big hug and tell her how much you love her and how much she has meant to you. For those of you who live a distance from your mother, please give her a quick phone call to tell her the same!

For those who are not yet mothers for health or other reasons, we also celebrate this day for all womanhood. It isn’t just about being a mother, because the impact we have as women on our significant others, friends, and children around us, is not only important… but great!

Lastly, for those of you whose mothers have passed on from this life, please take a moment to reflect on the marvelous impact she was in raising such a wonderful young lady, and thank her in your own way.

As a mother, there is nothing more important to me than my family.

Mother's Day Memories

For today’s #MomMinute video, viewer Chelsea asks the following question, “What is your most memorable Mother’s Day memory?

How to Create a 3D Flower Braid | Cute Updos

May 04, 2014

As Spring is fully upon us, with lots of Proms and formal school dances going on, Kamri and I wanted to teach you a variation of a hairstyle we showed you all last year.

This particular variation we call a 3D Flower Bun.

3D Flower Bun

Feel free to click here to see our original 3D Round Braid.

3D Flower Bun Hairstyle

We used that exact 3D Round Braid as the base for this hairstyle, however my good friend Abby Smith suggested that we pancake the edge of the braid to give the petals a more profound look. We LOVED it!

This updo hairstyle holds up very well, and is perfect for those formal dances, weddings, flower girl styles, gymnastics, ballet, or just a day out!

Yes, you will get lots of compliments on this one… GUARANTEED! Special thanks to Kamri for volunteering to be our model today!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 ponytail holder, 1 small hair elastic, 4-6 bobby pins, pomade or hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin creating a 3d round braid by pulling the hair into a high ponytail, and secure it with a hair band…
  2. Now divide hair into 4 equal sections, laying each section between one of your fingers on your right hand….
  3. The hair should lay like this: Strand #1 {outside pinky finger}, Strand #2 {between pinky and ring finger}, Strand #3 {between ring finger and middle finger}, strand #4 {between middle and index finger}…
  4. Now, take the index finger on your left hand and use it to hook Strand #3. It should now lay between your pointer finger and your middle finger.
  5. Take your middle finger and hook Strand #1. This will now lay between your middle and ring finger…
  6. Take the last two pieces and twist them once {so they cross over each other} and place them so Strand #4 lays between your ring finger and pinky and Strand #2 lays outside your pinky…
  7. All strands should now be sitting in your left hand and will be numbered 1-4 from left to right…
  8. Take your right index finger and hook Strand #2. This will now lay between your index and middle finger…
  9. Next, take your middle finger and hook Strand #4. This will now lay between your middle and ring finger…
  10. With the last two remaining strands, do a half twist so they cross, and then place them so Strand #1 now lays between your rink finger and pinky, with Strand #3 laying outside your pinky…
  11. Repeat Steps #4-10 until you run out of hair, and secure with an elastic…
  12. Now go back and pancake the braid {all four sides] by tugging on the elbows of the braid, without pulling the hair out of the braid…
  13. When finished pancaking the braid, begin to twist the braid up around itself into a bun {you will want to bobby pin the bun as you go}.
  14. Continue wrapping the braid around, and tuck the ends under the bun, securely pinning them out of sight, and securing the rest of the bun with pins…
  15. Then, tug the edges of the bun again to create the defined petals of the beautiful flower bun.
  16. Add hairspray {as desired}.

Hope you enjoy the app, and more importantly, continue to enjoy our family!

Happy Hairstyling!

Disappointing Your Parents | Mom Minute

May 04, 2014

One of the biggest questions I get asked is if my girls enjoy having their hair done.

In general, yes, they do. However, just like every other family, we have our moments. When it comes to filming hairstyles, we have never forced our girls to be a model, it has always come on a volunteer basis. This is why you will see CGH3 volunteering the most, and CGH4 the least.

Disappointing Your Parents

One of our viewers, Sasha, asks the following question, “I hate going to soccer and it doesn’t make me happy anymore, but I know my mom loves that I play. I want to quit, but don’t know how to tell her I don’t want her to be disappointed in me.

Disappointing Parents

As a parent, I want to support my kids in all of their child activities, but sometimes it’s difficult to notice when they’re bored with their current activities and are ready to try something new. I definitely fear that my kids will resent me for making them stay in an activity that they don’t enjoy. I also do not want them sitting idly by watching television or playing video games all day.

The key for us a parents and our children is always open and honest communication. In this episode of #MomMinute on The Mom’s View, I’ll teach you how to communicate so that everyone gets what they want!

For any of our readers, what suggestions do you have when kids are afraid of disappointing their parents? Please free to leave your comments below…

Secondly, and we have been thinking about this for some time, we’ve decided to RELEASE the names of our children!

Since many fans had been finding them out, and sharing them online, we decided to release the kids’ names on our own terms.

A few months ago, I was in LA filming with @TheMomsView where we had invited my good friend Colette Butler {yes, ShayCarl’s wife} on the show. We were talking, and I asked Colette if she ever regretted revealing her kids’ names last year. She said that she and Shay did not, and that it really had been a very positive experience for them and their fans.

I am not naive enough to think fans couldn’t find out our children’s names, since we’ve done quite a few appearances where the media went ahead and shared them anyway.

From there, fans began sharing with more fans, and it is something that we literally hold back anymore. We were spending so much time deleting comments referring to names that it was hard to find time to practice and research hairstyles. So, we are jumping on board with this name release on our own terms!

Lastly, we received our YouTube Gold Button Plaque for reaching 1,000,000 subscribers, which is funny, because we just passed 2 million! We just want to thank each of you for being with us all these years! We really feel like you are all part of this ever-growing family of ours!

Items Needed: Pure happiness and a SMILE!

Time Requirement: Indefinitely

Skill Level: For all ages

Hope you enjoy the app, and more importantly, continue to enjoy our family!
