Knotted Pullback | Easy Hairstyles

January 25, 2013

Nobody loves a simple hairstyle more than me!

Knotted Pullback | Easy Hairstyles

In fact, the best thing about these 3-minute styles is that they are simply “different enough” to grab people’s attention and generate lots of compliments without taking lots of time to create!

This hairstyle uses a simple knotting technique that is easy to put in and easy to take out… as easy as tying your shoes!

That perfect mix is exactly what you will find with the Knotted Pullback…

This knotting style is perfect for combinations in hairstyles, such as pairing it into a ponytail, sock bun, messy bun, etc.

Your friends will definitely wonder how you did it!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 bobby pins, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 2-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Brush the hair so that it is parted to one side. You can leave the hair straight or style it with waves. {Even super curly hair will work for this hairstyle!}
  2. Pick up a small section from the front on the heavy side of the hair, the side where the majority of the hair falls…
  3. Split that section into two smaller strands…
  4. Now tie the first step of a knot just like you would begin to tie a shoelace. Pull that “knot” so that it sits snuggly against the head…
  5. While holding the two ends in your hands, add a small section of hair to each side. {Please allow me to clarify… you are going to add hair from both sides of the knot into each strand. So you will pick up hair on the right side of the head and add it to the right strand. Hair from the left side of the head will go into the left strand.}
  6. Now tie another Stage 1 knot as in Step #4, again pull until snug…
  7. Repeat Steps #5 and 6 until you have 3-5 knots…
  8. Secure ends with a tiny elastic that matches your hair in color…
  9. Now, pull up some hair near the top of your head at the end of the pullback.
  10. Pin the pullback against your head using crossed bobby pins…
  11. Now lay that top section of hair over the bobby pins, and end of the pullback, to help hide them.
  12. Feel free to add hairspray or an accessory.

There you go… pretty easy, right?  Feel free to try it and enjoy the compliments!

Ladder Braid Side Ponytail | Cute Hairstyles

January 13, 2013

The twins and I will be attending IMATS in Los Angeles this next weekend {Jan 19-20} and would love to meet any fans who may also be attending. For anyone who does not know.  You can learn more information about it here.

* ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

For this weeks’ tutorial, we essentially show you two tutorials in one!  First, how to create a Feather Braid, and secondly, how to use that braid to create a cute Ladder Braid into a side ponytail.

Ladder Braid into Side Ponytail | Cute Hairstyles

{We have used this braiding technique for awhile, although we are just now filming a tutorial… and some of my hair-blogging friends have great tutorials as well, such as Princess Hairstyles, Girly Do Hairstyles, and Babes in Hairland!}

My twins are learning how to recreate this fun braid in their own hair, which is why we show you how to use it in a cute side braid… because it is easier to do on yourself that way!

The girls love this because the braid seems much more grown up than the simple ponytail version.

You will also note that this braid has a similar fun look as a few of our other ponytail combos, such as the Braided-Over Ponytail and the Side Fishtail Combo.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 3 small hair elastics, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by brushing all the hair over to one side, like you are gathering a side ponytail…
  2. Pick up a small section of hair on the underneath side of the head next to the nape of the neck, and secure the rest of the hair out of the way with a large hairband…
  3. Grabbing the small section, begin making a simple braid…
  4. As you go to cross over the outside-left strand of hair, pull out a tiny sliver-strand of hair and leave it out of the braid…
  5. Repeat the same with the next stitch of the braid. As you go to cross over the outside-left strand again, pull out a sliver-strand of hair and leave it out of the braid…
  6. Repeat until you have 2-3 inches left in the braid, and secure with an elastic.  This braid is what you call a Feather Braid.
  7. Now, release the rest of the hair from the large hairband and pick up another similar-sized small section of hair {this time near the front}…
  8. Braid approximately 4-5 stitches into this braid and then add the first sliver of hair from the Feather Braid into the middle strand…
  9. Complete one more stitch of the braid, and again, add in the 2nd sliver of hair from the Feather Braid into the middle strand…
  10. Continue until you run out of slivers to use, and then finish off with a normal braid and secure with an elastic. You should have a ladder looking braid sitting on top of the remaining hair.
  11. Now, reach your fingers through the bottom two “rungs” of the Ladder Braid and pull the remaining hair though the rungs…
  12. Remove both small elastics from the side braids, gather all of the ends together and secure with one hair elastic.

Enjoy!

Happy Hairdoing!

Twist-Braided Heart | Valentine’s Day Hairstyles

January 06, 2013

I love Valentine’s heart hairstyles!

Of all the holidays, Valentine’s Day is my favorite theme for styling hair… there is something simply cute and romantic about hearts in hair!

Twist-Braided Heart | Valentine's Day Hairstyles

This year, we wanted to do a heart hair tutorial mature enough for an older teenager or mom. This one is perfect!

We love how the braid actually “turns in” on itself, leaving your friends wondering how you did it!  Much different than the flipped-under ponytail we showed you in our very popular Flip-Braided Heart tutorial a few years ago.

Twist-Braided Heart | Valentine's Day Hairstyles

I saw photos of a version of this lovely style on the Hairdresser on Fire website and decided to film a video tutorial for all of you!

You also could do this with Fishtail or Rope braids for a slightly different look!

Enjoy!

Twist-Braided Heart | Valentine's Day Hairstyles

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, 2-4 bobby pins, hairspray, fabric ribbon or bow {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5-7 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. After brushing the hair, divide it by parting directly down the middle from forehead to mid-back of head…
  2. Then, section off the top half of the hair so that you now have three sections… the bottom half of the hair as one, and the top half of hair divided down the middle as two sections…
  3. Now, gather one of the top sections and begin braiding a simple braid as close to the inner corner of the middle part as possible and temporarily secure it with an elastic…
  4. Repeat step #3 on the other top section, again, braiding the braid as close to the inner corner of the middle part as possible and secure with a hair elastic.
  5. Now, take the right braid and twist it around itself clockwise toward the right side of head. Use a bobby pin to secure the curve to create the right crest of the heart…
  6. Take the left braid and twist it counter-clockwise toward the left side of the head and use a bobby pin to secure the left crest of the heart {as you did in step #5}…
  7. Now, bring the ends together to finish off the bottom shape of the heart.
  8. While holding the ends together pull off both elastics and secure the braids together with only one elastic…
  9. Lastly, feel free to use hairspray and then finish off the cute heart by adding an adorable ribbon or fabric bow as an accessory.

Video Tutorial:

I have a few other ideas we will be testing out in the next few weeks, but in the meantime… be sure to check out our other Valentine’s Day hairstyles!

If you liked this hairstyle, please feel free to share! Happy Hairdoing!

Hair-Wrapped Rope Braid | Easy Hairstyles

December 30, 2012

This hairstyle is so fast and simple!

I love a good rope braid {or plait} for those “Running-Behind Mornings” when I do not have much time to get myself or my girls ready before school.

Hair-Wrapped Rope Braid {Plait} | Easy Hairstyles

My niece Aniston spent the night last weekend at my house with the twins and she has been begging me for months to film a hairstyle tutorial on her!  How can I resist all of that beautiful blonde hair???

{Aniston is just beginning to learn styles on her own hair, so we agreed to teach her a hairstyle that she can recreate easily in on school mornings.}

What I love about a rope braid is that it is not really a braid at all… the only skill needed is to know is how to twist a hair strand. Simple as that!  With two 13-year olds myself, helping them learn a few easy hairstyles like this is a simple way to keep them interested in doing their own hair rather than relying on only a ponytail or a headband!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 large hairband, 1 small hair elastic,1-2 bobby pins, leather strand and hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3 minutes

Degree of Difficulty: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. To start, begin with straight or curly hair {Either will work fine.  Bangs will also work by pulling them into the braid or simply leaving them out and styling as usual}…
  2. Gather all hair over to one side directly behind the earlobe, and secure into a nice side ponytail with a large hair elastic…
  3. Section off a small strand of hair {to be used later} from the ponytail and leave it out of the twists…
  4. Divide the remaining ponytail hair into into two large strands…
  5. Now, twist those two strands {separately} in the same direction. I twist mine clockwise…
  6. Once those pieces are fully twisted, now begin winding the twists around each other in “counter-clockwise” direction {going in the opposite direction will keep the hair twists and form secure and tight when you let go of the braid}…
  7. Continue winding the hair around each other, counter-clockwise, all the way down while adding another twist or two to the original strands just to keep things tight…
  8. Secure the braid with a tiny elastic that matches the hair.
  9. Now, take the small section of hair we separated off at the beginning and wrap it around the top hair elastic, to hide it. Secure the hair wrap with a bobby pin, and tuck in any extra hair that remains.
  10. Feel free to add any cute accessories to the end of the twist.

Enjoy!
