Get Merida’s Fiery and Curly Red Hair | Disney Princess Hairstyles

July 02, 2013

Since we have been creating content for Disney Style during the past 18 months now, I am often asked which of all the Disney princesses I most closely relate.

It really isn’t a hard question anymore, after Brave came out in theaters last year!

I do not have red curly hair like Merida does, however, like her, I do have an independent and driven personality with a very laser-like focus.  I guess you would have to be to manage the daily schedules of an eight-person household!

Just this past May, Merida was coronated as the newest member in the Disney Princess family, and I was invited to attend.  To help celebrate this occasion, my girls and I decided to show you how to replicate Merida’s spiral curls using an easy straw no-heat curling method.  It really is a beautiful hairstyle!

This no-heat curling technique is similar to that of “rag curls” or “paper bag curls” that many of our grandmothers used on our moms when they were little.

The idea is to take small sections of slightly-damp hair, wrap/roll them tightly with a straw, and then tie the straw into a first-stage of a knot.  The straws actually hold up fairly well.

No-Heat Straw Curls

{I purchased a box of flexible, accordion drinking straws from Wal-Mart for only a couple of dollars.  I use these straws, because the flexible bend actually makes it easier to tie the straws into the hair.}

You can sleep on the straws for next-day curls by tying a silk scarf around the head, or simply wear the straws around for a few hours.  You can also simply use a hair dryer, like I did, to have the curls dry in only 10-15 minutes.

When you untie the straws, you will see beautiful corkscrew curls {like  old telephone cords} in the hair.  You can then separate the curls to your liking, and style the hair as desired for an everyday look.

No-Heat Straw Curls

To get Merida’s fiery red color, we used a mix of orange and red temporary “spray-in” hair color, which you can find in small cans at your local beauty supply or party supply store.  This sprays in and washes out easily.  {Be sure to use an old bath towel to drape over the shoulders to prevent  wet spray getting on the clothing.}  Once the spray dries, it holds up pretty well all day.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bandana, and approx. 40 plastic drinking straws. Optional: 1-2 cans of orange and red temporary spray-in hair color and an old bath towel.

Time Requirement: 20-30 minutes to tie the straws. 5-10 minutes to remove the straws and style hair.

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin with washed and dry hair.
  2. Separate off the top ¾ of hair, and secure on top of the head with an elastic…
  3. On the bottom section, take a small 1 inch section and spritz with water once or twice… just enough to dampen the strand. {If you drench it with water, the knots will not dry and the curls will not set.}
  4. Holding the straw where it bends, begin to wrap the hair around and around the straw away from the face. Keep the hair tight and close together on the straw…
  5. When you run out of hair to wind, and while holding the hair end against the straw, take both ends of straw and tie them like you would tie the beginning  step of a shoelace. When secure, let go and move on to the next strand…
  6. Continue Steps 3-5 until the entire bottom row of hair is finished.
  7. Now release the next layer of hair and repeat the same steps….
  8. Continue winding and knotting until all the hair is done. {When I was doing the top layer of hair, I parted the hair to one side and curled it all away from the face.}
  9. If you are going to sleep with straws in overnight, tie in a silk scarf or a bandana to help the straws remain in place. You can also let the straws sit in the hair for a few hours before removing, or even sit under a hair dryer for 10-15 minutes to set the curls.
  10. To remove the straws, simply untie them and let hair fall off straw.You will have amazing corkscrew curls that will loosen into soft curls over time.
  11. Separate the curls to your liking and style as desired. {Be careful to not brush out the curls!}

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

October 21, 2012

The hairstyle for this week is sure to be a popular one, since so many women are reluctant to use too much heat in their hair. The golden question with using no heat is… how do you obtain gorgeous curls without it???

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

First, I want to give a huge shout-out to Intermountain Moms on Facebook! They have a program similar to Dial-a-Nurse, only they use pure social media to help us moms!

Nurse Dani at IntermountainMoms was able to help me this last week know when we should take CGH#1 to the doctor after she fractured her wrist during gymnastics… she saved me approx $150 for an x-ray that would have been too early to tell! {It is fractured, BTW. *sad*} They also have daily giveaways there, so be sure to enter! {My friend won a 1-month supply of diapers in August!}

Well, we have already shown you how to create No-Heat Headband Curls, and we have shown you how to make No-Heat Sock Curls.

How about another cute no-heat curling technique???

This version uses a technique we call Cocooning, yes, cocooning as in a caterpillar turning into a butterfly!

Since it uses a knot to, they style only provides curl on the bottom 2/3 of the hair, so I find that a headband or hat is the perfect accessory for this hairstyle! {You might also pull the hair up into a hair-wrapped ponytail, which will wonderfully show off those gorgeous curls!}

These cocoon curls also last for a few days, so you can combine these curls as a 2nd or 3rd day ‘do using any of our accent braids, twists, etc!

Rather than try an explain the steps here, it is better for you to watch the video tutorial below… it will be much easier to follow that way…

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bandana, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 15-20 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Happy Hairdoing!

Money Curls | With Guests Michelle Money & Laura Armstrong

September 02, 2012

I know you are going to love this week’s tutorial!

We are so happy to introduce two special guests for this video with Michelle Money (from ABC’s “The Bachelor” and runner up on “Bachelor Pad”) and her best friend/YouTube partner Laura Armstrong.

Michelle Money Curls | Cute Hairstyles

Many of you will recognize Michelle as a reality star, but did you also know that Michelle is a licensed cosmetologist?  She has even offered to do a new cut and color on me soon!  Laura is also a professional esthetician, and has a great knowledge of all things skin and beauty!

Some of you may be wondering how I came to know these two lovely ladies, so I will tell you the story…

I was sitting in my car waiting for gymnastics to end with CGH#4 and looked over to see Michelle waiting in the car next to me.  I mustered up enough courage to go over and strike up a conversation with her.  {She was so nice and did not seem as stand off-ish as many reality stars do!}  In the process of our conversation, Michelle mentioned that she has a YouTube channel called the MMandLShow.  I mentioned that my daughters and I also have a Youtube channel, and from there… the idea to do a collaboration video was born!

Of course I had to go home that night and check out their channel and quickly found myself watching many of their videos.  I was intrigued by many of their hair-curling techniques {especially for more adult looking curls} and have been using some their techniques for months now on my own hair!  I also loved many of their beauty secrets and one video in particular caught my eye {which I will detail in the next section}.

So I decided to meld the two together and film for you a beauty tip from the girls AND Michelle’s secret to her gorgeous curls for which she is widely known!

Beauty Tip: The PMD (Mersonal Microdermabrasion)

I’ll just be honest here… Michelle is as beautiful in real life as she is on TV, probably even more!   When I saw her in person, I immediately was curious how she obtained such fabulous skin!  So, of course my attention was peaked when I stumbled onto a video by both Laura and Michelle talking about their “magic skin secret”… the PMD Personal Microdermabrasion tool!

PMD | Personal Microdermabrasion

I was curious enough that I ended up finding one myself and trying it out!

I’m happy to report that I’ve now been using it for about 3 months and I absolutely LOVE it!!!  I simply incorporated it into my skin care regiment for once a week.  It really does leave my skin feeling sooooo smooth, soft, and less wrinkly!

For those of you not familiar with the PMD, it essentially buffs the top layer of dead skin away which then gives your skin a more soft, younger looking, and fresh look.  You will find that it helps control fine lines, wrinkles, big pores, and even some acne scarring.

Once I had tried it, and decided I loved it on my skin, I thought I would try it on my daughter’s skin. She is almost 13, and doesn’t have fine lines or wrinkles yet… but she is getting some of that normal teenage acne on her forehead and nose.  I thought I would just test it out on her as well to see if the PMD would help with the acne.  I was enthusiastically surprised when it did!  Not that it cleared up her acne 100%, but I can tell that it removed some of the worst dead skin and pore-clogging oils from the surface and allowed her acne cream to absorb better.

When using the PMD, make sure you view the accompanying instructional DVD first, to avoid damaging the skin.

I’m sure you will love this little secret! After I started telling people about how much I liked it, I was surprised to learn how many other people I know are already using it!  Hahahaha… I guess I am on the “slow boat ” with this one!  Other YouTubers like AndreasChoice, MissGlamorazzi, Elle Fowler’s AllThatGlitters21, etc, have all been talking about it already!

If you decide you want to try the PMD, as I have done, you can do so by visiting the PMD Website here.  If you enter the coupon code CuteGirlsHairstyles, then you can receive 25% off of your order!  Thank you, PMD!

Hair Technique: Michelle Money Curls

Michelle Money | Hair Curling Techniques

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, flat iron, 1 inch or 1 ¼ inch curling iron {we used Hot Tools brand}, hairspray, dry shampoo, and pomade

Time Requirement: Approximately 30 minutes {depending on amount of hair}

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin with clean, dry hair and flat iron the hair beforehand {This is Michelle’s secret trick… even flat ironing the bottom 6 inches of hair will work}…
  2. Separate hair into small sections starting with hair closest to neck and working up. Take smaller sections of hair, about a 2 inch square, and spray with hair spray…
  3. Work hair around the barrel of curling iron, but leave out the last 2-3 inches of hair.  This will keep the ends looking flat a provide the more messy, “tousled look” that everyone wants right now…
  4. Continue to curl hair all over head in the same manner.  Your goal is to create curls that are less tight-spiral looking and more like a loose bend.  {This technique just provides a more natural, sophisticated look.}
  5. Use a flat iron to give bangs {if you have them} a quick pull and flip the ends out ever so slightly… you want your bangs to blend into the hair on the sides of the head.
  6. Use a dry-shampoo spray at the roots, and around your hairline.  This will prevent oil buildup over the next few days and will create texture and volume in the hair.
  7. Using pomade, run a little dab through your fingertips and then onto the ends of your hair to control flyways.
  8. Last but not least… LOVE your new look!

This hairstyle may take a little more time, depending on your length of hair, but it will create an amazing look that will last for several days!  Believe it or not, the curls will actually get better looking as the days go on.  In this video, Michelle’s were already three days old, and I wore this style for 4 days before washing again and it looked great!

Enjoy, and Happy Hairdoing!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Special Guest

April 17, 2012

Several months ago we uploaded our 1st version of the Katniss Braid, long before the movie came out. The movie was a blockbuster smash, and everyone was amazed at the hairstyles seen throughout the film!

Right after the premier, Linda Flowers, the lead hairstylist on The Hunger Games movie set, began searching the internet to see what people were saying about her hairstyles.

In fact, Linda was so amazed at how the Katniss Braid was becoming a “symbol”, so much that teen girls worldwide and their friends were wearing the braid to see the movie in theaters! She found us on YouTube and recognized that CuteGirlsHairstyles had a huge hand in helping teach literally thousands of our fans how to do the braid!

As such, Linda reached out to us and offered to give me a personal tutorial of the many Hunger Games hairstyles over Skype!

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

During our tutorial, I quickly saw that the Katniss braid had a little more prep work to it than I had originally thought! Linda showed me how she added the texture into Jennifer Lawrence’s hair “before” she created the Katniss braid {something I had not figured out}.

She uses a tool called the TopStyler® {by InStyler®} to add volume and stranded twists into the diagonal Dutch braid. From the leaked photos prior to the premier, many thought that there was maybe one more strand added into the braid… and this was the reason why. You can see exactly how to create this texture by viewing the tutorial below.

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

I appreciate that the TopStyler uses a slow and uniform transfer heat to curl the hair, rather than the immediate super hot heat a curling wand provides that only heats the outside of the strand. It also allows for the curl to stay in much longer.

This is the exact look Katniss wore throughout the arena scenes in the movie, taught to CuteGirlsHairstyles personally by the one who created it… Linda Flowers! Hope you enjoy it!

{You can find the TopStyler at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ulta, or Amazon online.}

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, hairspray, TopStyler, 1 hairband, quiver of arrows {optional}

Time Requirement: 30 minutes {approximately, including heat time}

Spiral Curls | Waterfall Braid

May 02, 2011

Continuing on with our Waterfall Braid series, we wanted to show you this one which incorporates the use of spiral curls on the fall-through strands of the braid. (For those of you who do not know how to braid this style, please review our how to waterfall braid tutorial.)

I think this hairstyle turned out absolutely darling!

 Waterfall Braid Hairstyle with Spiral Curls

We offset my daughter’s part a little, and then did a waterfall braid on both sides – meeting up together in the back.

Waterfall Braid Hairstyle with Spiral Curls (Left)

Waterfall Braid Hairstyle with Spiral Curls (Right)

Waterfall Braid Hairstyle with Spiral Curls (Front)

We then took a Conair Spiral Styler and curled the loose strands of the hair and left the rest of the hair straight. You could curl all of the hair, but we really wanted to accent the loose strands of the braid against the hair. It is just a matter of your preference. We bought our spiral styler off of Amazon, at the following link…

Always be sure to us a good heat protectant on your daughter’s hair before curling. I find that this specific spiral styler works better than a wand or other curling irons because it grips the entire strand of hair and forms the curl much faster and with less heat.

Just like other curled styles, you will find that throughout the day the style will “curl crawl” {curls migrate into one another}. All you have to do is run your fingers through the strands, and the curls will separate back to original form!

Items Needed: Rat-tail comb, one hairband, spiral curler (iron), heat protectant, hairspray, accessory (if desired).

Time Requirement: 20 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

We know that this style will be extremely popular for more formal occasions (communions, weddings, Proms, Homecomings, etc.), but it does not have to be.

In fact, I think you moms should try this hairstyle on that Friday night Date Night with your awesome husbands!

Happy Hairdoing!
