Twisted Zig-Zag Hairdo | Updo Hairstyles

As promised a few weeks ago, we wanted to post an updo hairstyle for you… please keep in mind that this style really is a twist hairstyle, not a braid. {It sure does look like a braid, however!}
This hairdo utilizes a very simple twisting technique, adding in hair only as you reach the sides, thus creating a very elegant zig-zagging pattern in the hair.
To make this a more elegant hairstyle, you may choose to leave a small strand on either side, in the front of the ears, that can be curled. For a formal dance or wedding occasion you may also use micro twist-in flower accessories.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 large hair elastic, 2 small Goody Spin Pins, 2-3 bobby pins, hairspray and accessories {if desired}.

Side Flat Twists | Back-to-School Hairstyles

I know that many of our styles I use on my daughters, and that so many of our earlier styles were meant for little girls.
Well, today we wanted to do something for the older girls that is very fun… with a little edge and punk!
I first noticed a variation of this on Kendall Jenner from the Kardashians, only in the photo she wore cornrows {braids} instead of twists. There are a few other stars who rock this look as well.
I prefer to use twists in this hairstyle instead, because they are faster to do and look fairly similar. You can use either bobby pins, as I have done, or you can secure the twists with small clear elastic bands. {If you were to do cornrows, the hairstyle could be used for a week or so.}
This is a fun look that takes very little time to do. We like that it looks punk enough, kind of like the side of the head is shaved… only you do not have to commit to a shave to get the look! Also, depending on where you part your hair, you could use as few as three twists or as many as five… it is all up to you!
Here I have my daughter’s hair straight, but you could do this with curly or wavy hair as well! I threw in a shot of me wearing this hairstyle, as well! For an even edgier look, you could do this to both sides of the head!

Note from Mindy: In the video, I refer to how I learned this twisting method by researching online how to do hairstyles on my black daughter’s hair {since her hair-care routine and hair texture is so different than my other daughters}. Some fans on YouTube have taken offense to my usage of the term “black”. Please know that I am not racist in any way… I love all my children equally! Many of you also know that we do not give out our children’s names for security purposes, so we have to refer to them in different ways. It is also important to note that we use the term black often with respect to our children only because “African American” can be a misnomer. There are so many blacks whose heritage comes from Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, or other islands in the Caribbean. Labeling them all as “African American” for PC sake is incorrect. Our daughter’s heritage is Caribbean and Italian, with a little Native American, and even more… her birthmother asked us to refer to our daughter as black. We celebrate Black History Month, at times do watch Black Entertainment Television, and talk about Martin Luther King Jr. This heritage is important to our family! :)

Over the past few months, we have received so many requests for hairstyles that it is hard to accommodate all of them. We wish we had time to do all of them, but with six children who are my highest priority… it is difficult to find spare time.
What we do find, however, is that there may be a reoccurring theme among the hairstyle requests…
We have had quite few Facebook posts or emails asking for hairstyles from The Game of Thrones TV series on HBO. We do not watch HBO, but many fans have sent in photos and I have to admit some of the hairstyles are super cute!
{Note to readers: This is not a show that we will watch in our home, simply because we do not agree with its content. We also would not advise anyone under the age of 18 to view it either, since it apparently contains mature content and themes.}
From an emailed photo of a hairstyle worn by the character named Sansa, here is what we are calling this the ”Double French Braid & Twist”…
Steps:
- To begin, center-part the hair and then section off about a 1.5 inch strip on either side of the part. {These sections will provide the hair for the two French backs.}
- Then French Braid the right section until you reach as far back as the crown of the head, then finish of the hair with a simple braid {tying it off loosely with an elastic band}…
- Repeat step #2 on the left section of the hair…
- Then take the braids and twist them around each other, tying them off together with an hair elastic.
- Add hairspray {if desired}.
We added volume to the hair with a curling wand beforehand, simply to add more texture to the hairstyle. It was only on the top layer of the hair, with the underlying hair “as is”.
This would be a perfect 2nd-day hairstyle if you had braids or curls in your hair from the previous day. It is so simple to do, as long as you know how to French Braid, and will certainly have people asking you how you did it!

We have received a lot of attention for our Waterfall Braid hairstyle tutorials, with over 18 million YouTube views between our first two videos alone!
What I hear from some girls, is that they are not very good at French braiding and as such they can never get the braids to look right. We want everyone to be able to get that awesome cascading waterfall look, so…
About six months ago, Kori, a good friend of mine from Princess Hairstyles, posted a simple “cheat” for the Waterfall Braid that used a twist on the side, rather than a braid. The end result looks so much like a waterfall braid that not many people would know the difference!
For this tutorial, we carried the twist all the way around the head and we think it turned out super cute!
Items Needed: Brush or rat-tail comb, 1 bobby pin, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin on front, right side of the head and section out 1 large strand of hair that can serve as your base for the twist around the head…
- Divide this strand into 2 equal pieces, and begin by twisting them around each other one time.
- Now, take a new selected strand of hair and place it between your twisting strands, so that it literally falls through like in the Waterfall Braid.
- Twist the 2 original strands once more.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 all the way around the back of the head and towards the top of the left ear.
- For the last added-in section of hair on the left side, be sure to pull back into the strand about the same amount of hair you pulled initially to created the twisted strands… this will give a balanced look from the front.
- When you finish adding in your last twist, grab a bobby pin and sure-secure the end of the twist above the ear, making sure to hide the bobby pin as best as you can.
- Use hairspray {if desired} to help control flyaways.
