Back to School Hairdo: Twist-Back into Square Knot

August 14, 2009

Begin by straightening hair. This step isn’t necessary, but I like the look better if the hair is straight. It makes the knot stand out a bit more. If your DD’s hair is naturally straight then you are all set!

Items Needed: Brush, comb, hair straightener, bobby pins, and hairspray (pomade optional).

Time Requirement: 5-10 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Now part hair wherever natural part falls. Section off a small piece on each side of the head and twist it back. You can use a little Pomade to help the twists stay together and eliminate flyers from static…

Take the two pieces and tie half a knot. Like you are tying a shoelace. One piece under the other and tighten them against the head. You will now have this…

Now using bobby pins secure this in place. I do it in such a way that the bobby pins are hidden. I think I used about 4-5 bobby pins…

Once the first 1/2 of the knot is secure take the remaining ends and tie together again in the same way… like you are doing a double knot. I think the official name of this is a “square knot“. Use bobby pins to secure in place once again. Leave the ends sticking out a little and fluff if necessary. Use hairspray to help hold in place…

The Bun-Hawk | Crazy Hair Day

February 23, 2009

If this hairstyle doesn’t make you giggle, I don’t know what will! This probably isn’t the hairdo you use to send your darling daughters to church, but it sure is a fun, silly do!

Use it for a game day do, a crazy hair day at school, or just for lots of comments and stares. My hubby came up with this one! (I have a few other Crazy Hair Day hairstyles listed on this blog.)

Items Needed: Brush, comb, spray bottle, hairspray, and 8 rubber bands.

Time Requirement: 5-10 minutes.

Skill Level: Easy

Start with wet, brushed hair…

Begin by parting a large rectangular section of hair in the middle of head. Secure this section with a rubber band.

I didn’t take pictures of this next step, but you can see it three pictures down if you are confused. Twist the hair around the rubber band until it creates a bun. Secure the bun by wrapping a rubber band around the whole thing. Now section hair all the way around the head about 2 inches above both ears. **You will ultimately have 4 sections so keep this in mind.**

Secure hair with a rubber band in the center of back of head.

Twist hair around to create a bun and add a rubber band to secure. Section the remaining hair in half. Secure each section with a rubber band (to create ponytails).

Now twist the hair around and around till you get buns.

You will now have this!

Happy Hairdoing!

Knots into Side Ponytail | Cute Hairstyles

February 19, 2009

This hairdo was one of my very first ones on the blog. Since then, my readers have grown A LOT so I thought I might re-post once in awhile, just in case people missed it the first time around. This one is super easy, very fast, and can be used on little kids all the way up to teens.

Items needed: Brush, comb, water, hairspray/gel, 1 rubber band.

Time Required: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Start by parting the hair on top of the head into one middle section. The parts will run from front of head towards back of head…

Then create a rectangle shape by parting across the head between two previous parts…

Separate that section into two parts…

Take the two pieces of hair and tie like you are doing the first step of tying a shoelace (cross the two parts and wrap one underneath)…

This is what it should look like at this point.

Now wrap the hair underneath again… essentially a double twist. It will look like this…

Pull both strands until knot becomes tight against head…

Repeat with a second rectangle just behind the first…

Pull remainder of hair into a side ponytail and add in the 4 strands of hair from the knots on top…

Happy Hairdoing!

Top-Knot with Banded Ponytail

February 10, 2009

This hairstyle is fun and really EASY! My husband can even do this, so I will put it in as a Daddy-do also!

Items Needed: Brush, comb, hairspray, spray bottle, and 4-6 rubber bands (depends on length of hair).

Time Requirement: 8-10 minutes

Begin with hair wet and brushed. Create a rectangular-shaped part on middle, center top of head…

Secure with rubber band. **NOTE** I have found it best to put the ponytail just slightly off center. Look closely at the picture and you will see my ponytail is off to the right-bottom section of the square…

Next twist the ponytail until it is tight.

Now create a knot by tying hair around itself (I did my best to take good pictures of this step, because it does matter which direction it is tied)…

Try to get the knot as close to the rubber band as possible (you can slide the knot down the hair a little until it sits right on top of the ponytail).

Now gather remaining hair, including the ponytail, together and secure with rubber band. Again I do this off center, to the right side, behind the ear.

Now secure hair all the way down the ponytail by adding multiple rubber bands.

Her hair was pretty long in this picture so I did about five total rubber bands. Add accessories to match outfit (you will note my cute flower via Joy @ Chic & Unique in my sidebar)…

Happy Hairdoing!
