Waterfall Twists into Mermaid Braid | Cute Hairstyles

May 12, 2013

Feel free to follow CGH on Instagram to see behind-the-scenes photos of our hairstyles and family!

Many fans have emailed or tagged me in photos from Pinterest and Instagram asking me to film a mermaid braid tutorial.

To be honest, I haven’t loved the style enough to film one because I didn’t particularly like how the strands pulled into the braid from the front and sides.

Thinking about it for some weeks now, it hit me that we should create a hairstyle combination using the Waterfall Twists as a base for the style… and then use the falling strands of those twists as the “add-ins” for the Mermaid Braid!

When I tried it out, as soon as I released the braid… it nearly took my breath away! We L-O-V-E-D it!!!

CGH#3 wanted to be my model knowing that today is Mother’s Day, and she asked to do the video introduction as well! Isn’t she adorable???

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray, and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 8-10 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by brushing hair, and making a center part right down the head…
  2. Complete a waterfall twist on both sides of the head, beginning near the temples and ending at the back of the head…
  3. Take the ends of both twists {you should have 4 strands total} and create three strands from them {I do this by joining together two strands, one from each side, to create one strand}…
  4. Now begin a simple braid….
  5. After one complete stitch, pick up the nearest waterfall strand {the hair running through the twist} on the left side of the head and add it into your left-most braid strand…
  6. Now pick up the nearest waterfall strand on the right side of the head and add it into your right-most braid strand…
  7. Next, complete a regular braid stitch without adding in any hair {this will space out the stranding and create the mermaid braid look}..
  8. Repeat Steps 5-7 by adding in the waterfall strands until you run out…
  9. After all waterfall strands are included, finish the rest of the hair off into the simple braid…
  10. Secure with a hair elastic…
  11. Add any accessory or ribbon as desired.

Enjoy!

Bailey’s Double Lace Twists | 3-Minute Hairstyles

April 28, 2013

Our Same-Side Lace Braid tutorial has been VERY popular, just passing 3,000,000 views yesterday!

Well, my 13-year old daughter, Bailey, knew it was popular, so she took it upon herself to figure out how to get a similar look… but with twists!  As you can see below, she figured it out!

Double Lace Twists | Cute and Easy Hairstyles

The technique is very similar, by adding hair only into the top, but instead of braiding the strands together, you are twisting the two strands as you go back {like a rope braid}.

Double Lace Twists | Cute and Easy Hairstyles

Here Bailey shows us all how to create “Double” Lace Twists on herself, simply to show you how easy it can be done! {I love that my twinnies are getting creative with their own hair!}

This is literally a 3-minute hairstyle! If you like, you may begin with only one twist which is very cute as well!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 bobby pin, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 2-3 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Part off a medium size section of hair in the front bang area, close to the part line {if you have bangs, include them in this section to incorporate the bangs into the twist}…
  2. Now, divide this section into two strands and to twist them, the front strand over the back strand first…
  3. As you complete that one twist, add a small strand of hair from the top of the head {this creates the “Lace” effect to the twist as you go along}…
  4. Continue twisting and adding in hair for another 4-5 stitches, and then finish off the hair with a rope braid.
  5. Pin that top twist behind the head, out of the way, by using a bobby pin to keep it tight on the back of your head…
  6. Now grab a similar size section of hair in front, below the first twist, and repeat steps 2-4 to create a second lace twist…
  7. Finish off the second twist with a rope braid as well…
  8. Using your free hand, unpin the first twist from behind the head….
  9. Take both twists and connect them with an elastic at the end…
  10. When you let go of the rope braids, they will naturally twist together a little creating the illusion of a complicated 4 strand twist…

Enjoy!

Double Braid Sparkly Headband | Braided Headbands

March 31, 2013

We wanted to do a hairstyle this week that would be different than all of the other braided headbands you see out there.

Double Braided Sparkle Headband

This one promises to get lots of attention because of how simple it is, yet it can be accented with thin sparkly headbands that you can find inexpensively at Walmart, Target, or Claire’s, etc.

Double Braided Sparkle Headband

This style is perfect for girls of all ages, and would be particularly beautiful as an accent to an updo for Prom, Homecoming, or any other formal occasion!

This hairstyle incorporates two thin braids, on either side of the head, which are then brought up over the head and pinned down just below the opposite ear.

Then the sparkly plastic headbands are placed in to accent the braids to your liking. {I pancaked the front braid just a bit to add a contrast to the braids themselves, which ended up being a very good touch!}

Items Needed: Curling wand, brush, rat-tail comb, 2 small hair elastics, 4 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}, and two thin sparkly headbands.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by brushing out the hair, and curling with your favorite curling tool {I used a 25 mm NuMe curling wand} or overnight no-heat method…
  2. Hairspray the curls when you are done curling, and leave them alone for a few minutes to let cool and set…
  3. {Optional} Tease the top of the hair a little, from the crown down the back, to add mega-volume…
  4. Pick up a section of hair near the ear and begin to braid it over the head {make sure to braid in the direction you want the braid to lie, which is up and over… otherwise, the braid will lay funny when you are done}…
  5. When braid is finished, secure with a hair elastic.
  6. Repeat Steps 4 & 5 on the other side of the head.
  7. Now, finger comb through the curls and smooth the top of the hair lightly with a brush, as needed…
  8. Bring each braid over the top of the head, and secure behind opposite ears with bobby pins {two crossed bobby pins works great}…
  9. {Optional} You can tug on the edges of the braids, like I did to the front braid, in order to pancake them.  It adds a subtle differentiation to the style.  I left the back braid alone.
  10. Now, place one sparkly headband in front of the first braid, and place the second headband between the first and second braids…
  11. Adjust the braids and headbands, as desired.
  12. Finish off with hairspray {if needed}.

Stacked Braids | Cute Braided Hairstyles

February 10, 2013

A few weeks ago, we posted a video called the Ladder Braid Side Ponytail, and it received a lot of positive feedback!

In fact, one of our fans, Ceridwin, adapted the feather braid technique to create a new, beautiful “stacked” braid look, and sent us a photo on Twitter!

Stacked Braids | Braid Hairstyles

I loved it so much that asked her to tell me exactly how she did it so that I could teach you! She agreed, emailed me her instructions, and here you go!

You simply create a large feather braid, with tiny strands coming off each stitch from both sides of the braid.  You then go back and Dutch braid the feathered strands on top of the regular braid, and then pancake the latter.  Further instructions are below…

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5-8 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by brushing the hair and pulling it to wherever you want the braid to lay. {In the video, I did the hair straight down the back, but a side braid would also be very cute.}
  2. Using all of your hair, section it into three strands and create the first “stitch” of a simple braid…
  3. After the first stitch, on every outside edge, you will begin creating a Feather Braid… {On the left-most strand of hair, pull out a sliver of hair off the top and lay it to the side. For a DIY, you can use a clip, teeth, or extra hands to hold the strands out of the way.}  Also, for this braid, I chose to feather off larger strands at the top and smaller feathers as we worked our way down…
  4. Now cross that outside strand over the middle to become the middle strand….
  5. Then, go to the right-most section of hair and pull out a sliver of hair off the top and lay it to the side, and cross the remaining strand over into the middle…
  6. Repeat these alternating steps until you run out of hair.
  7. Secure with an elastic. You should have a normal-looking braid with feather strands of hair coming off both sides of the braid all the way down. {Kind of looks like a feather, huh? LOL! That’s why we call it a Feather Braid!}
  8. Now, pick up the top two feather strands of the left and the top feather strand on the right.
  9. Begin a Dutch braid using those strands. {When you need to add hair into the braid, use ONLY the other feather strands of hair on both sides of the braid.}
  10. When you run out of feather strands, finish off with 2-3 stitches of a regular braid….
  11. Then, undo the original hair elastic and secure both braids together with that same elastic.
  12. You should now have two braids right on top of each other, the Stacked Braids.
  13. To help the Dutch braid stand out just a bit more, you may choose to “pancake” the bottom braid edges, as I did, by gently tugging on the elbows to make them a little more puffy. {This helps add to the overall illusion of braid awesomeness!}

Enjoy!

If you liked this hairstyle, please do feel free to share! Happy Hairdoing!
