Sock Curls | No-Heat Curls Hairstyles

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

By popular request, and because no-heat hairstyle ideas are very popular right now… we decided to share one of the curling techniques my grandma used on me when I was little.

No-Heat Hairstyles | Sock Curls

This hairstyle curling tip uses a little bit of water and socks! Yes, mens socks {clean ones, of course} to curl hair!

Now, like we did in the Headband Curls, you want to start with dry hair. Then gently spritz the hair with a water spray bottle. You will want the hair to be slightly damp, but not wet.

{If you do this directly out of the shower, your curls will likely not hold when you take out the socks.  It is important that you start out with dry hair.}

I also decided to try a little bit of curl enhancer {my first time using it} that I rubbed into the ends of the hair, to see how it works.

I then grabbed a section of hair from the top of the head and rolled the hair around the sock until I reached close to the scalp and then tied the sock. I did the same for the back-lower hair, as well as one each on the sides of the head. That makes a total of 4 tied socks.

If you are worried about the socks becoming loose or untying, you can sleep with a silk scarf over the hair.

After a good night’s sleep, you are ready to take out the socks. You will be amazed at how easy this hairstyle is, and how wonderful your curls will look after using only socks!

I guarantee you will get compliments on your curls, and when you tell everyone you used “socks” to get them… just watch their faces!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, curl enhancer, 4 mens socks, hairspray and accessory {as desired}

Suave Dry Shampoo | Hairstyle Tips

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Two months ago a friend of mine introduced me to the idea of dry shampoo. I guess I have seen it around for awhile, but literally thought to myself, “C’mon, a dry shampoo? How useful can that be?”

On this occasion, I saw how it was used and we were hooked from then on!

With that recommendation, and with a limited budget, I went to WalMart and purchased several bottles of Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo for about USD$2.50.

Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo

Most girls have learned that washing the hair everyday can be high maintenance and may actually cause damage by stripping the hair of its natural oils. If you do not wash it often enough, however, the hairline and parts {areas next to the scalp} start to get oily, leaving an unsightly greasy look and feel.

We wash our hair every other day, sometimes skipping two days. How regular you wash your hair is really up to you, as everyone is different. {We do find, however, that not washing the hair daily can actually help in styling as a little bit of natural buildup and left-over hairspray/gel gives the hair more “grip”.} So, what can you do on those in-between days when the hair starts to look a little greasy? Try a dry shampoo to revive it!

Suave’s Dry Shampoo contains a mineral clay that helps absorb excess oils secreted from the skin glands next to the hair follicles. Notice I did not say that it  eliminates the oils 100%, as natural oils are good for the hair – it just helps remove the excess. After spraying along the hairline, 10-12 inches from the hair, gently rub the powder in with the palm of your hand or fingertips and style as desired. It also has a citrus/grapefruit smell that is very nice.

You can read more about ingredients and product usage from the Suave website, and can see the professional Suave Stylists use the product. If you cannot find this in stores near you, those of you in the US can buy it online from Amazon.com.

The tutorial below shows how we use Suave Professional’s Dry Shampoo on those off-wash days. I include before and after shots of our actual results, although please recognize that with different hair types, your results may not be exactly like ours.

So if you are looking for a way to revive your hair on those in-between wash days, give Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo a try! If your results are as good as mine, you will not be able to live without it!

How to Make Feather Headbands

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

In our last Daddy ‘Do hairstyle, Four-Strand Ponytail, my husband showed a feather headband that we had made.  We received so many comments asking us how to make these headbands, so we decided to film a tutorial for you all.

How to make Feather Headbands

I first bought one off of Etsy a year ago for between $16-20, and I loved it… but one day while browsing through Hobby Lobby, I saw that they sold pre-glued feather patches.  I was sooooo excited!  And they were listed at $3.99 each, however I bought them on sale for half that price.  I have since seen that Michael’s also sells them.

I then bought a 3-pack of wire headbands that were listed at $2.99, but were also on sale for half price.  The felt material I already had, so all we needed was a hot-glue gun and a pair of scissors…

I recognize that feathers as accessories may not be ideal for everyone, but they certainly are a trend right now.

I figure that I had less that $4 into each headband, which is far less expensive than $16 or so online!  Plus, it can be a fun craft to do with your darling daughters!  I now have six different headband styles that we have made.

{As I taught my my best friend Jenny how to make these headbands, she showed me how to make cute feather earrings.  Feel free to check out her tutorial on YouTube!}

Items Needed: Feather patch, scissors, felt, simple wire headband, hot-glue gun.
Time Requirement: 5 minutes
