This is one of those braided hairstyles that is perfect for a teenager as well because the style is unique enough not be seen as little Laura Ingalls-ish.  The braid needs to be done fairly tight (although popular braid styles today are worn fairly loose) because if it is not, the smaller strands cannot grip the larger one… causing you to lose the creative bends throughout the day.

Items Needed: Spray bottle, rat-tail comb, 2 hairbands, accessories (as desired).
Time Requirement: 5-10 Minutes

I have promised that I will be adding more short hairstyles, given that I and my youngest daugther have short hair. Again, since the hair is shorter, you really are limited on what you can do in terms of braids, etc. Moms, this one really is for you! I wear this all the time!!!

Funny enough, I filmed this hairstyle in early July and posted it on YouTube a few weeks ago. Many of you know that I just returned from Hawaii on vacation. While flying home, on the plane I watched “The Last Song” with Miley Cyrus. If you have seen the movie, released earlier this year, you will notice that Miley’s character wore this hairstyle during the funeral scene near the end of the film. I thought it looked just as cute on Miley as it does on my girls! I know you will like how easy this hairstyle is to do, and is is perfect for little girls, tweens, teens, and moms! Items Required: Rat-tail comb, spray bottle, topsy-tail tool (if you do not want to use your fingers), 1 ponytail holder/band, accessory (if desired).

With my two oldest girls getting closer to the teenage years, they are wanting less and less the “little girl” hairdo’s. Fortunately I still have two little daughters left, so you will be getting a mixture of age styles. Let me know what you think!

Perhaps one of the more complex hairstyles is the Waterfall Braid, and so many YouTube viewers have left comments wanting to know how to do this if you do not have anyone to help you with it. What I love about this style is that it can be done on short hair (like mine) as well as long (my daughters).

I do this hairstyle on myself all the time. It is very possible to do this braid by yourself, although it may take some practice. Don’t be upset if it doesn’t turn out perfectly the first time… it may take a few tries. I decided to film a tutorial to show you exactly how I handle the stranding as well as the falling pieces in this waterfall braid.

Perhaps one of the most frequent hairdo requests I receive in email from moms is further help in how to create our Rosette Buns hairstyle (click link for step-by-step photos and instructions) from last year. 

As such, I was able to film this hairstyle tutorial on my daughter last week.  (One YouTube commenter just said that you could simply use only two rosettes on top and the rest of the hair down in the ponytail and it would look very cute as well.  I hadn’t thought of doing that, but it would look super cute!)

This can be considered a flower girl hairstyle for a wedding, a ballet hairstyle, or just a simple and elegant updo for prom/homecoming or a formal night out…

Items Needed: Comb, brush, spray bottle, hairspray, and 6 rubber bands.

Time Requirement: 10 minutes

What I love about this hairstyle is that it can be done so quickly, yet it looks fairly complex! Even dad’s can do this since it does not involve any braiding! (The thickness of the ponytail will vary based on how thick or thin your daughter’s hair may be. You may find that to change up this style a bit, you could use two ponytails instead of one.)

Funny enough, I decided to turn the camera on my husband during the filming of this hairstyle… so there is a brief cameo by my dear hubby a few seconds into the video.  He wasn’t too happy with me, but I thought you should all get to meet him!  (He’s getting a kick out of the YouTube comments this video gets.)  Here is the video tutorial…

I am not sure how many of you are watching America’s Got Talent this season, but there is a very inspirational story there about two young girls (Christina, age 20, and Ali, age 13) who are overcoming the odds of Cystic Fibrosis, a deadly lung disease, to become very talented singers. Their backstory is quite emotional, as by the time I ended the segment, I was crying and emotionally blown away by their performance!

Now… are Christina and Ali the most talented singers ever on the show??? Very likely not, but for these girls to become as talented as they are when doctors told them they would never be able to sing… they have overcome tremendous odds!!!

This is a fabulous family, which is very close knit and supportive of eachother. Their father is a county commissioner and mom is very musical. Both the parents and the children are active in their community and religion. The family has already lost one sibling to CF, and the four remaining siblings each continue to battle this disease every day knowing that death is just around the corner! What an amazing awareness these girls are bringing to the rest of us, of overcoming insurmountable odds to reach your dreams!

This hairstyle can be used on little girls, tweens, and teens. Even moms can use this hairdo! The style is particularly fun, because you can incorporate hair twistbacks any way (and quantity) you desire. {Be mindful, that thin hair will make the twists look very skinny, so you may only opt for one twistback per side. Using Pomade on the twisted strands will help you reduce fly-aways, too.}

As always, in hairstyles like this, if your daughter cannot hold the hair twists for you… feel free to use a gator clip or something to hold them.
