Cage Braid Ponytail | 5-Minute Hairstyles

This unique braided hairstyle is lesser known, but it is making the rounds on Pinterest from a few wonderful sites.

What I love most about this braid is how easy it is to do, however the finished product looks so complicated {like you spent an hour on it}! If you know how to French Braid, you can do this hairstyle easily with only a small tweak to the stranding!

When you are finished braiding, you simply grab the center part of the braid about 1-2 inches below the ponytail holder. Then, gently pull that part of the braid up over top of the ponytail holder {secure it there} and the whole braid literally “pops” out into a super-cute 3D braid!

After watching the video, you can clearly see why this hairstyle is called a “cage braid” because the style effect looks very much like a ribcage. My girls and I fully plan on using this braid in a Halloween hairstyle using a red-heart bobby pin stuck in the right side of the cage.

It would also make for a fun Christmas party hairstyle because the braid could easily be decorated as a tree! Many fans will likely use it for Crazy Hair Day because it does have a very unique look to it!

Although I know this hairstyle may not be for everyone, I promise you will receive many compliments from people on it, with most wondering how in the world you were able to do it! Our secret is… that it only took 5 minutes! How neat is that???

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Rat-tail comb, spray bottle, two ponytail holders, 4 bobby pins, hairspray and accessory {if desired}

Thank you soo much for making me look like a great mum!

  16. I did this style on my 9yo this morning without telling her what to expect. She looked in the mirror and was astounded. She is active, so it may not hold all day, but it sure looked great this AM and was so easy!!

  17. Wow! This is so cool. I have a dance coming up at my high school called “Morp” (Prom backwards) and you not supposed to wear anything formal, just funky clothes like neon colors and I didn’t know what to do with my hair. I saw this and it is so perfect because it is crazy yet not too “childish”, I guess you could say. I also saw the chalk highlights and I thought that it was super cool.

  19. Do you have any tips for thin hair? For example, I love the “Lauren Conrad” braid across the front, but when I do that with my daughter’s hair it always will show through in the back where I pin it. Same with my hair.
    Any other tips for thin hair would be great. Your daugther’s hair looks nice and thick.
    Thanks and I love this website.

  20. This is so sweet! I’m going to have to try this on my friend soon… do you think this would work for shorter hair as well?

  21. Thank you for all your great ideas. I have four girls and before you, all I did was pony, braid or piggy tails. Now I am so much better and cool hair styles. You are a lifesaver.
