Waterfall Braid Headband Combo | Braided Hairstyles

The hairstyle for this week uses a variation of our popular Waterfall Braid tutorial {over 16 million views}.  I think you’re going to LOVE what we do with this!

Everyone knows that the waterfall braid has become a very popular hairstyle. Have you thought about wearing it as a headband?  Well… we decided to try it and the hairstyle turned out simply gorgeous!

Recreate the Hairstyle:

  • Begin by sectioning hair from ear to ear.  Secure bottom section of hair with an elastic to keep it out of the way.
  • Create a Waterfall Braid starting near one ear, going up over the forehead, and down to the other ear. Make sure all dropped strands fall toward the back of your head.
  • Secure the braid right behind your ear with a tiny elastic the same color as your hair.
There you have it! Pretty easy, right?

Now, to show you just how versatile this hairstyle accent can be, I’m going to show you four different ways to finish off the headband!

1.  Waterfall Headband into Gorgeous Curls/Waves

Leave your hair down and add a few cute curls.  The dropped strands will cascade over your head and down with the rest of the curls.  {You can view our NuMe Wand Curl video or our Sock Curls tutorial to get ideas on how to create gorgeous curls.}

2.  Waterfall Headband into a {Hair-Wrapped} High Ponytail

Pick up all of the hair previously secured out the way, and brush upwards and into a high pony tail.  Add in the dropped pieces from the waterfall braid {be careful not to pull too hard on the strands and un-straighten the waterfall braid}.  Add an elastic to secure the high ponytail.  Grab a small strand of hair and do a hair wrap to cover the elastic, or even a cute microbraid for a fun accent.  {This version is PERFECT for girls need to wear a ponytail, in sports, for example, but still want to have a little fun flair to the hair!}

3.  Waterfall Headband into a Bun with Accent Braid

Create a high ponytail, however this time twist the hair into a ballet bun and secure with an elastic.  Braid the remainder of the waterfall braid behind the ear and create a long microbraid and wrap it around the bun for a little add flair.  {This is a great twist on a bun for all of you girls that love dance and ballet!}

4.  Waterfall Headband into a Messy Bun

Create the high ponytail, as before.  Now mix it up by adding a super cute Messy Bun

When you are finished, you will have four fantastic look… all very different yet absolutely beautiful!  I’m sure you are going to receive may compliments on this one!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 alligator clips, 2 small hair elastics, 2 large hairbands, 2-3 bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes for each of the four hairstyles

Skill Level: Medium

Happy Hairdoing!

  19. Hey Mindy! i discovered your website a few weeks ago and i LOVE it! you are soo talented and your daughters are cute 🙂 i have tried so many of your haistyles on my sister so that whenever i want to do her hair she throws a tantrum! i just wanted to ask if you could do the same thing but on your own hair, i tried and its just doesnt stay in. also i can totally relate to your daughter, im 13 and in year 8 and one of my friends heard some boys saying i was cute… the boys were NOT!!!

  20. I wouldn’t worry too much about your daughter embarassing you, one time I did a hairstyle, and the model spent the whole time goofing around, and I just started 7th grade too, but the boys would never do something like that!

  21. I tried this on myself and it isn’t too hard; it just doesn’t look quite as nice, and seems to want to fall out. I have not done it on someone else yet, though. If you have tried it without success keep trying and it will get easier.

    God bless you all!

  22. Keep up the good work mindy! I might be able to do this with my hair( it’s curly) it looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopretty and cute! (I guess that’s why u call it cutegirlshairstyles!

  23. I totally agree with Olivia, Moontone girl, Cam and Lisbeth! I have been trying to do this on myself and haven’t suceeded!!!! Can you PRETTY PLEASE make video showing on how to do it on one self??? I am in college now and unfortunatly live far away from my mom so she can’t do i on me anymore =(

  24. Ummmm i have a question for you 3rd daughter
    What is the hairstyle you have hated the most that your mom has done on your hair?

  25. Hi,this hairstyle is sooooo cute!!! Some questionsfor cute girl #3
    Besides hair what do you like to do for fun?

    Do you ever get bored during the videos?

    What does your friends think about your hair?
    And
    Does your mom ever run out of time to do your hair with so many siblings? How does she work it into her schedule?

    That’s it! Thanks:)

  26. How old are the twins?
    I’m 13 and in 8th grade. Tomorrow i’m going to try doing the ponytail variation on myself (is that possible?) for school.

    I love all the hairstyles on this site and your family is so pretty (that includes you :).

    God bless you, Lisbeth

  27. Hi mindy!! I am such a big fan of ALL of your hairstyles. They are all just soo pretty. Whenever I wear any of your hairstyles everybody goes oh my gosh your hair is sooo pretty!!! I LOVE braids!! I know alot of braids; lace, French, Dutch, normal, waterfall, and snake braid. Are there any others you know?? Thanks!!
    Btw ask your daughter if she loves doing hair and if so what’s her favorite hairstyle to do?
    And your daughters are adorable!!! So pretty!!

  28. This is SOO cute! I can’t wait to try it on myself! I like all of them, but the sock bun is my least favorite.

    I have a question for your 3rd daughter. What is your favorite hairstyle and what are your siblings favorites? Can you do them on yourselves?

  29. I love this hairstyle I am in seventh grade also just started I’m a couple weeks ago! Also a question I would like for daughter #3 is Do you like it when your mom does your hair in these videos? Your awesome love your hairstyles!!<3<3

  30. can u plz make a video of this with u doing it on ur self? ans looking forward to the next video..cuz i think ur number 3 is really cute 🙂

  31. That is adorable! Oh my goodness!
    Something similar happened to me in 7th grade.
    (I am 14 and in 8th grade so I am close to both your twins age.)
    I have a question for your #3 daughter.
    What is your favorite hairstyle your mom does?

  32. Love it, especially the braid wrapped ponytail! I would like to see the third child to answer these: 1)Obviously your mom does the tutorials, but do you guys also know how to do some of the styles on yourselves? 2)What’s the best part about having so many siblings? 3)Who is the most picky about their hair? …o and i can totally relate to the story the girl in the Waterfall Braid Headband Combo | Braided Hairstyles video told. a [not so attractive] boy in THREE of my classes likes me. im polite but i make it clear im NOT interested :/. and other people know this so it’s pretty embarrassing!
