Homework and Classroom Behavior | Mom Minute

Setting aside hairstyles, this week’s Mom Minute episode for The Mom’s View is about children’s homework and classroom behavior…Homework and Classroom Behavior | Mom MinuteMany of you do not know this, but my mother-in-law is a teacher, and a very good one at that! She has been teaching for 27 years, 26 of them in the 3rd grade, and has always been a parent favorite.

She taught for one year before she had my husband and his twin sister, and then went back to teaching when they were in the 8th grade. My mother-in-law was great about sharing many tips and tricks for early reading and math in kids, but I also remember the stories of poor-performing kids with uninvolved parents. I remember not wanting to be one of them… I wanted to be an involved mother.

With our own kids, it is important first to recognize that every child is different. What homework routine works for one, may not necessarily for the next. I simply tried out a few homework routines/settings with my kids when they were younger, found what worked best, and remained consistent.

It is also important for us as parents to see our childrens’ teachers as allies and not as the enemy. It is so easy for us to dig in our heels with a, “No ma’am, not my kid…” or, “My kid would never do that”. Kids are great about telling the consequences that a teacher gave them, often with a “mean teacher” label, but never telling the whole truth about their own actions that lead to the discipline.

Watch the video below to see my Mom Minute segment on my own kids homework routines and and how I work with teachers on classroom behavior…

  2. Hey Mindy, I love all your hairdos and creativity but my daughter is always telling me that she gets into trouble and it’s not her fault, I don’t want to be enemies with her teacher as her husband passed away but there’s got to be truth on my daughters side. What should I do?

    1. Thank you so much, Christy! You are still one of our very favorite teachers that any of our kids have ever had! We were lucky that three of our kids had you! We all miss you!
