Diagonal Bow Braid | Popular Hairstyles

In May 2012, we posted our Bow Braid tutorial which was a hit, with now nearly 4.3 million views!

In that video, we showed you how to create the basic bows in a French braid, and showed you various live examples on my other girls of hairstyles where you can incorporate the bow braid.

Making the bows really is not that difficult once you get the hang of it, as I am sure you will agree.

In the video I show you exactly how to part the hair, which is really the trick to understanding the hairstyle.

One of my daughters wore this around Disneyland one day earlier this week and we must have had over 100 compliments on it!  I am sure you will see the same thing!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 hair elastic, 1 hair pin, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 10-15 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair {I part a section beginning at the end of her right eyebrow, on a diagonal, to about an inch above her left ear}…
  2. Next, take the part to her forehead with a straight line {I know this is a strange part, but it creates just the right look when the style is finished}…
  3. Secure the parted section out of the way for now…
  4. Go back to top of the right ear, and begin a diagonal French braid running along the back of the head…
  5. When you run out of hair to add into the braid, continue with a simple braid and secure with an elastic.
  6. Now, release the section of hair on top and brush straight.  This hair will be used to create the bows {you can add water, pomade, or hair wax to add extra precision to the strands you incorporate into the bows}…
  7. Take a hairpin and slide it through the first top stitch in your French braid…
  8. Next, take a small strand of hair from the top section and form a loop with it…
  9. Slide the loop through the hairpin end and hold onto the loop with your left hand…
  10. Now, gently tug the hairpin back through the loop of braid.  As it pulls through, it will also bring the hair tail through and create a another loop, creating the bow look.
  11. When the bow is complete, remove the hairpin {you can add an extra twist to one of the loops so that the bow lays and looks better}…
  12. Let the ends of that bow fall to the left of the braid, where  they will be hidden in the next bow you create…
  13. Continue making bows all along the braid, placing them in each top stitch of the French braid…
  14. Add hairspray or spray wax when finished for a better hold {as desired}.

  1. I am a 13 year old who finded all these magnificent to look …thinking them impossible to recreate without professional intervention…… but with ur help it became as easy as a ponytail….but after doing the hairstyles….. do I have to say the look frm the back part ????…..my front part of the head didn’t looked good and it shifted back my hairline quite a few cms…… can u tell me how to hide ‘that’ look??? Like a puff or something??

  2. I tried this on my hair. Usually I can recreate their hairstyles easily, but I couldn’t even get one bow in this time because it’s so hard to do on one’s own hair. It looks like its only possible to do on someone else’s hair, which is really disappointing.

  3. I am scared to try this hairstyle, because the description says it his difficult. I love the look, but need to do it on myself… Could you please detail a video on how to diagonal bow braid your own hair {I know you did DIY the bow braid but I would love for you to do a DIY diagonal braid}

  4. I want to learn how to do this hairstyle but I dont know how to french braid can you make a video on how to french braid?
