Knotted Braid | Updo Hairstyles

This cute braided hairstyle was submitted by a viewer from Moldova, asking me if I could figure it out.  It took me quite a few tries, but I did eventually get it.  (As always, if you see an amazing hairstyle and want to submit it… simply email me!)

This hairstyle is a little different than a standard daisy chain braid, as you will see from the video tutorial.  Once you get the knotting right, the style can be done very quickly, and you can even do it on yourself (trust me, if I can do it… so can you)!

The knots are very easy to take out, just like any other braid. This is an absolutely beautiful braid that will leave people asking you how you did it!

A few viewers on YouTube suggested that I list this as a Homecoming/Prom Updo hairstyle, because it is so unique and can be accessorized in any number of ways.  Here are a couple more views of this cute knotted-braid hairstyle…

  1. I do my little cousins hair who is 5 and I was wondering how I get the knots out or do they make curls.
PS I love your website. The hairstyles are so easy and CUTE

  2. I love this, but have not mastered it yet. Once i get the finger placement down and what goes where I know I will be able to do this in a few minutes which in itself is great. I’m always looking for the quick hairstyles for my 9 year old for those days when time is not on my side. Will keep trying until I hopefully master it.

  4. That style looks awesome! I’m only in year 6 but my mum is a total klutz at hairdoing so i’ve learnt 2 tie my own hair but i just can’t get that one on me! can you pls post a video on how to do this style on urself?

  5. Okay, I just did this style on my little sister, and it turned out awesome! I had to end it in a ponytail tight to her head because I messed up and lost the strands of hair so I just ended it. Anyway loved it! I also love you blog/website. Do you have any tips for doing this hairstyle, and others, on myself? Thanks.

  6. I honestly do not understand this. I think it looks beautiful, but right when i think i have it, i mess up. :/

  7. This is super cute, but I gave up after five minutes. I could not get the first knot down! Pieces of hair was coming out everywhere. Once I managed the first knot, the fingering for the rest was tough, especially trying it on myself in a mirror. I will practice this hairstyle more though. After the attempt on this one, I thought, “maybe I’ll try practicing something simpler, say, a french braid?” I have never wore a french braid in my hair, so I tried that and made a straight A! I think I will stick to the more simpler hairstyles until my fingers warm up, then move on to something a bit more challenging like this one.

  8. I have been doing this hair style on my daughter this whole past week. I’ve got the hang of it so it doesn’t take long at all :). Of course it took me a few tries to get it right the first time. You were right though. Everyone has been asking how I did it. It is truly unique. Thanks a lot! Your videos have taught me a lot.
P.S. This hair style works great on short hair also.

  9. Wow! I swear I cannot get this!! Haha it looks amazing, and I thought would be good for girls camp because it leaves my hair off my neck, and keeps it tight. But my mom can’t do it, and i could probably do it on someone else, except there is no one for me to practice on, well I guess I’ll just have to french braid my hair!!! Thanks for all the videos!! I have learned A LOT in such a short time! Thanks so much! <3

  10. Love it will be tryin this one on my sister 2moro … we have been doin a new do everyday this week b4 she goes to work – she gets plenty of comments – we love it … big fans in Australia

  11. I love this look. We tried last night and I was able to get about 1/2 way down my oldest daughter’s hair before my fingers got all jumbled up. We will be trying this one again. I think that I’m going to make sure to put some kind of product in her hair to make it stay put though. Maybe gel or her curl creme.

  12. LOVE this hairstyle- I just tried it on my 3 year old, but she would not let me finish.. I cant wait for my 6 year old to get home from school to do it on her! Thanks !

  13. this hair do is so preety but its so hard for me I’ve tried it on my dolls but i never get the same results i try and try but i never succeed please help me on how to do the fingerings :I

  14. Absolutely fabulous! Cannot wait to try this out on my daughter, but will definitely have to review the video as I’m doing it. Thank you so much for all you offer to us moms that really just want to do more than pony tails and pig tails. My daughter loves them all!

  15. This is beautiful! Today was my second try with it and it is definitely an improvement from my first. It looks great (though not as great as yours) and I’m excited to send my daughter off to preschool with this unique hairstyle today. Thank you and thanks to your blog viewer in Moldova for letting us all learn it. 🙂 Once I get this down better, I’m going to give it a try on myself… wish me luck! Thanks again!

  16. I loved this one as soon as I saw the picture! Watched the video and thought I’d have trouble getting the finger work right, but you explained it so well that I managed it first go! Thankyou!

  17. Hey i love your hairstyles i get on your website everyday i love it. it would be nice if you could show me an easier way to french braid i try really hard but i cant quite get it!!!! this hairstyle kind of helped me think of french braid but fake, a fake french braid. i really love this hairstyle.thanks for helping me mindy ps i think your kids are adorable

  18. I love it!! I was a little confused at first, but I got it…..on my doll head at least. I’m going to try it out on my daughter for school tomorrow.
For Heather: I think what throws you off is when she adds the side in…where it leaves the hole….the pieces you had added together, stay together. You don’t go through them to tie. That is where I was confused. Im not sure this makes sense, but keep trying its really easy once you get it. And SOO worth persevering.

  19. Have you watched the movie Letters To Juliet- there are some great hair styles I’d love to learn. The main one is the hair pulled halfway up and it almost looks like a half french twist in it?
Also on the show Parenthood, the most recent show this past Tuesday Julia’s braid… can’t tell if it’s just a looser french braid or what- it looks really cute too.
So if you get a chance to expirement that would be great!!

  20. I tried this hairstyle last week and it looked amazing! I also figured out that is it is super unique if you do it sideways across the head with only half the hair, so that you get a unique half up- half down do.

  21. wow is right! I think I am going to practice on one of my little girls dolls frist to get the tecnique down. Can’t wait to learn thougnh, so cute and unique
