Our Hair Care Routine | Cute Girls Hairstyles

I have been blogging here since 2008, and the single-most request I receive from fans {after hairstyles} is regarding what we do to take care of our hair. Finally, we decided to film this, so here you go… CuteGirlsHairstyles’ Hair Care Routine!

Haircare

With six girls living in our home, hair care is something that is very, very important to us! Among us girls, we have four with thick hair, two with thin, one with oily, one with dry, four with natural waves, one with tight curls, and one stick straight. It is too much for me to detail an individual care routine for each of these situations, but in this video I provide my best general summary of our family hair care…

Before I begin, it is important to understand a few things about hair. Approximately 60% of your hair quality is strictly due to genetics, and the remaining 40% or so depends very much on how you take care of it.

Since there pretty much isn’t anything we can do about the first 60%, it is up to each of us to find what combination fits with the remaining 40% to put our hair in the most ideal, best-looking situation.

Here are a few key steps to consider:

  1. Drink a lot of water.
  2. Eat healthy foods, especially plenty of fruits and veggies.
  3. Take a multi-vitamin to supplement what you may not be assimilating from your food {and drink milk}. Biotin is also a very good supplement to take.
  4. Regular hair trims {to eliminate dry, damaged, or split ends}. Just the ends, you do not need to take much more off.
  5. Don’t over-wash your hair {about once every 3-4 days is ideal for most}. Trust me on this one. Now, I still shower often, I simply wash my hair every 3-4 days. We just wear a shower cap or tie our hair up into a high hair bun.
  6. Try not to overuse heat or chemicals {perms, colorings, etc}.

Each of the products mentioned in the video are typically available between your local Walmart, Target, or Sally Beauty Supply {or equivalent stores inside or outside of the USA}. If you prefer not to run around looking for these items, you may purchase all of them through this Amazon link.

Products:

  • Suave Professionals Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
  • Bed Head Hi-Def Curls Shampoo
  • Organix Tea Tree Mint Conditioner
  • LouAna Pure Coconut Oil
  • Couture Color Pequi Oil
  • Watts Beauty ArganGold Argan Oil
  • Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse
  • Tresemme Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse
  • Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo

Please know, again, my dear friends, that everyone’s hair is different… what works for me and my family, may not necessarily work for you.

We ask that you be mindful of how you take care of your hair and find a combination of diet, hair care, and product that works best for you.  Good luck!

Happy Hairdoing!

  1. I just want to say i love ,love, love ur toutorials!!!:-) and i love ur family!! Happy 5 year aniversery!! I was wandering if u guys could make a toutorial about girls who have alot of layers in there hair becauae its sort of hard for me to fishtail braid my hair or do some of the hairstyles.PLEASE!!!! oh and another thing my birthday is april 23 and i was wandering if you could please give me a shout out prettttttttttttttttty please it would be the best birthday present ever!!may God bless u and your beautiful family

  2. I love all the hairstyles here but I have really thick hair so I find it hard to do some hairstyles especially braids even though I have medium/long hair. Do you have any hairstyles or sugestions for me?

  3. So I have like medium to thin hair and I LOVE my leave in conditioner!!! U can buy it or u can just go on the Internet and find recipes it’s really easy. Lave in conditioner is good for three things it acts like a detangler, it is like a sunscreen for ur hair, and it volumizes (and mine smells coconuty!)

  4. My mom really wants me to get my hair trimed regularly too, but my hair grows VERY slow and i do not get split ends often. How often should i get it trimmed?

  5. Care of the hair and care of the scalp skin may appear separate, but are actually intertwined because hair grows from beneath the skin. The living parts of hair (hair follicle, hair root, root sheath, and sebaceous gland) are beneath the skin, while the actual hair shaft which emerges (the cuticle which covers the cortex and medulla) has no living processes. Damage or changes made to the visible hair shaft cannot be repaired by a biological process, though much can be done to manage hair and ensure that the cuticle remains intact.’:

  6. Hi,
I got this book called “curly girl” and it said that for curly hair you shouldn’t use shampoo and i have been going without shampoo for about two years and my hair used two be very frizzy but since I haven’t been using shampoo my hair hasn’t been frizzy at all and now I love my curly hair

  7. First off, I absolutely love this site! It’s really inspired me when doing my own daughter’s hair (she’s almost 3)! I have question about oily scalps, though. I wash my hair more or less every other day but one the days that I don’t wash it has to be up because it’s just too greasy up top. I was wondering if you had any tips or recommend any products that would help control some of the greasiness? Haven’t tried “dry” shampoos, was also wondering if that would be a good substitute.

  8. I have long wavy hair that is a little bit past shoulder length, it’s really nice and soft (not boasting) i use tea tree shampoo and conditioner – its brilliant!
I only wash my hair every five days though and it gets horrid and greasy – but i found my life saver!!!!!
I use coconut and exotic tropical Bastante dry shampoo (Bastante does lots of other scented ones too – but the coconut one smells really nice!!!)
Its really cheap and easy to spot cos it has really bright tubes, my one is yellow with green flowers, you can get them pretty much anywere – supermarkets for example.
The hairspray that i use is cheap (£1 from lloyds), bright pink and called Bristows.
    🙂 hope this helped
    😀

  9. hi im idamis my hair is REALLY REALLY long i usually just wash it once a week my hair is natrualy curly and i use olive oil shampooo but im not really sure its right for my hair what do you think?

  10. My girls and I love your site. We are always trying out new hairstyles and recommending your site. I have fine, thick, oily hair. I used to wash it everyday, but I am trying to cut back. One trick that my friend taught me is to wash your hair with baking soda and/or vinegar before you shampoo. The vinegar strips the junk out of your hair, so you might not want to do this too often. If I use baking soda, my hair is not so oily on day 2 of not washing. It is taking some time, but my hair is slowly becoming less oily if I don’t wash it. I used to have oily hair if I washed it the night before. Hopefully this helps all of you oily heads like me out there. HarryPotterluver, My sister-in law has spiral curls too and uses LA looks gel. It’s cheap and her curls stay soft.

  11. My suggestion for people who are trying to cut down on shampooing their hair is to try cutting down slowly rather than eliminating the shampoo altogether. Or rather than using shampoo to just rinse your hair. You still feel clean but you’re not doing the same damage to your hair.

  12. Hey Mindy! Love your videos and I try them all out on my daughters hair. I decided to comment on this because you introduced me to the dry shampoo which is awesome and I only wash my hair about every 3 days now and I spray a little of it on if I look oily in between but I am wondering if you have ever tried WEN by Chaz Dean? I have been using WEN exclusively now for about 4 years and I think it is amazing. There’s no sulfates so it doesn’t foam at all, and it’s a one step cleansing conditioner. There’s several varieties for different hair types and you can mix and match them. I am currently using SixThirteen and my daughter does best with Sweet Almond Mint. It’s a little expensive but it replaces so many products that it’s worth the money. It serves as shampoo, conditioner, leave in, detangler, etc. There’s also a brand new kids line of WEN coming out on October 9th that’s tear free and in more kid friendly scents. I always buy mine from QVC. Let me know if you have tried it and what you think!

  13. I just have a quick question: you mentioned a lot of things when your hair is wet. Do you still rinse it every day to redo your style, or is it wet only on the days you wash it? Thanks! And thank you so much for all the tips and ideas!

  14. Hi! Thanks! I didn’t know about the various oils. I have fine hair. Henna “dye” is an amazing, amazing deep conditioner. When I use it, someone always comments that I have “model hair” even though it is normally very whispy. You can get a neutral conditioner or a shade lighter or similar to your natural shade if you don’t want to color your hair. Conditioning effects ffects last for quite a while. Color dyes last about 6 weeks on adults, months on kids. It’s safe for use on colored/permed hair and it works beautifully with your natural highlights. It’s pretty messy, though, so be prepared.

  15. Hi! I am having a hard time managing my hair. It is curly in the front and curly/wavy in the back. It’s very hard for me to not wash my hair every day because it gets knotted and frizzy. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks so much!

  16. Hi Mindy,
I love your site! Just wondering if you have any tips for me.

My hair gets greasy really fast (If I wash it at night it will be oily in the morning). I know you said you should wash it once every 3-4 days but I can’t because it gets so greasy. Do you have any tips on how to prevent it from getting oily so fast?

(P.S. I only condition the ends of my hair.. a friend of mine recomended that to me but it hasn’t made to much of a difference)

  17. Hey Mindy
I found Aryan Oil at Fred Meyer $5.99 for 3.75 oz. The brand is Renpure Originals. I was looking at ingredients but cannot find any for the brand you recommended. Renpure is so much cheaper. What is the difference between the 2?
Thanks. Also do you wash the coconut oil out with shampoo?

  18. Hi Mindy I just want to say I LOVE your hairstyles, but you have been putting up lots of stuff about haircare and curls and celebrities, and I am not really interested in that. I think it would be great if you could do some more hairstyles please!

  19. Hi Mindy! Let me start by saying that I adore your site and use it often. You have a precious family and I think you are a wonderful mom! I will certainly try your hair washing routine. I have oily hair with dry scalp and I have yet to find any products that help. Thank you for the video and God bless!

  20. Since it came out today I am finally remembering to ask this! My daughter saw a preview for Snow White and the Huntsman and asked me to do her hair like Snow White’s hair in the battle scene. I have no idea how to do that so I thought I would ask if you knew or had an idea of how they did it! I would love a tutorial for a few of those hairstyles!

  21. i let my hair air dry so i can’t really use mousse or root booster. are there any products that are good to use if u air dry your hair? also i have long thick hair that i can’t get to hold curl. any product you can recommend?

  22. I am sorry if I misspelled your name because here in our country we spell your name as Mindi and pronounce as “Mindy”. sorry If I misspelled yours. 🙁

  23. hi Mindi,

I am 16 years old and I am very fond of your videos on youtube, i really like your hairstyles they’re so pretty. 😀 I usually try them on my classmate and sister rather than my self because i find it hard to do on myself, but when I can I usually try them to school :DD..
What I do to my hair is that I shampoo everyday but only apply conditioner to it only once a week.
I just have a few questions for you. I came from Philippines and our country has tropical heat, so the tendency to sweat is really high, is it still advisable if i don’t wash my hair everyday? You just mentioned about shampoo., what about conditioner?.. thank you for posting videos online :DD hope you can help me 😀

  24. I was watching the video and you talked about the shampoo you use, but you said nothing about conditioner. Do you only wash with shampoo and not conditioner?

  25. This is for Lindsay V. My daughters and I have very long thick hair and our hair falls out whenever we brush it or wash it, basically anything we do to it. My husband is constantly cleaning our hair out of the drain! lol. As long as there are no bald spots, I would say it’s naturally shedding and wouldn’t worry about it. This has been happening to me for years and I still have a very thick head of hair.

  26. Hiya Mindy!

So you don’t even wet your hair everyday? I exercise each morning and my head gets pretty sweaty. I don’t see how I can avoid doing this and not washing my hair each day. Is there some secret out there I don’t know about to help me have a clean head notwithstanding the sweat? What do you do??

Thanks a million. Love your website a whole bunch!

  27. I really really love your hairstyles. I’m ten years old and I think your daughter are really pretty. Thank you for all these hair care tips, but just recently you’ve been posting a lot of hair care and accents and curls so can you please do some HAIRSTYLES! I have waist length honey blonde straight hair and crystal blue eyes. Any recommendations?
    Thank you Mindy!!!!

  28. Thanks for the tips, Mindy. I love the idea of training my hair to only need washing every few days. I’m just not sure how I could do that since I work out every other day and it gets so sweaty. Is there an answer for that, or will I just need to keep washing?

  29. Hi Mindy! I have a question about hair washing. I frequently play tennis and have also just started doing yoga, both of which make me perspire, of course. Not only is my hair sweaty, but it is a mess after I exercise. So, I end up washing as a result, I either have to wash my hair almost everyday. Or accept that it is not going to look great on the days that I don’t wash it. I obviously pull it back (I do two low ponytails to keep it from falling out while I’m exercising), so once it has been pulled back and damp from perspiration, it’s really hard to recover from that with decent looking hair. Any suggestions on what I can do to NOT have to wash my hair so frequently under these circumstances? (My hair is down to the bottom of my neck, and I have choppy, blunt bangs) Thanks for your blog!

  30. Thank you for the product tips, is overwhelming in the product aisle!! I have fine hair and two daughters who have fine and coarse type hair. Their hair is long and so far have shown no interest in the blow dryer (they are 9 & 11 yrs old)!
I enjoy your site, thanks again for sharing!!

  31. I have very fine, thin, and wavy hair. A few years ago I stopped washing my hair everyday and it has been wonderful. I just recently started to use dry shampoo. I have yet to find a hair care routine I love, so I can’t wait to give yours a try. since I have wavy hair, it is naturally very dry and since I have so little hair (fine and thin) it is easy to see how dry it is. It’s a fine line between trying to moisturizer it and not over doing it so it is weighed down.

  32. Please be careful with the Suave product line. Shampoo and conditioners are VERY important, they set the foundation for your style. If you look at the ingredients in Suave you’ll find it VERY similar to floor wax! Think about what that does to your hair over long term use?!?!?! I really enjoy your videos, it helps to keep me inspired, and keeps me out of the rut of doing the same styles over and over again.
Professional products can be bought at a good price. Plus they are more concentrated so you use WAY less than over the counter. Design line products are Great and are usually under $10. Purology is my absolute FAVORITE, but unfortunatly they run about $27 a bottle. Keep up the cute hair, I have recommended your site to TONS of people! Thanks.

  33. Hi, I have really fine hair that is short bob length. I use bumble and bumble shampoo/conditioner products and have really enjoyed those. I tend to use the Paul Mitchell Root lifter and volumizing hairspray. I guess I’m wondering if you work out on the days you’re not washing your hair. I work out about 5 days/week and can’t imagine not washing my hair afterwards. Would the dry shampoo work on those days? I’m looking forward to trying the Argon oil. Thanks for the tips!

  34. Hi, my name is Maggie and I am 12 years old. I love this website because I have long straight hair and get tired of just leaving my hair down and not doing anything with it. A product I love to use in my hair is Paul Mitchell Smoothing Super Skinny Serum( its in a tall clear bottle with a green top). After you shower you put some into your palm and run it through the ends of your hair. It makes my hair super soft and shiny without looking greasy, and it smells good. 🙂

  35. Hi–

Thanks for the video! I, too, only wash my hair every few days, but on the days that I do, it seems like a lot of hair falls out– I usually have a good handful! Do you experience this? I do have shoulder length curly, somewhat dry hair and I’m wondering if I need to condition it better. Thanks!

    Lindsay
