Cute Hairstyles | Flat-Iron Waves

I have received quite a few requests for more short hairstyles, particularly ones that I have worn in previous tutorials. Even more, followers are looking for more styles they can do on themselves.

One hairstyle that I have been doing on myself quite a bit lately consists of Flat-Iron Waves, which add nice volume to the hair. (The waves are much more subtle than what you will find in the second-day hairstyle coming from Double French Braids.) Plus, this wave style can be used on pretty much any hair length.

Here are a few photos of the Flat-Iron Waves (please forgive my squinting as the sun was in my eyes!)…

The use of the flat iron is similar to what was done in our tutorial for Flat-Iron Curls except that the wave look is created by a rocking of the wrist as you glide down the hair.  Explained further, it is an alternating (up and down) twisting of the iron that creates the wavy style.

Feel free to accessorize this style as you wish, with headbands, clips, hats, or even a French-Front Braid!

Items Needed:  Brush, flat-iron, hairspray, and heat protectant (always be sure to use this when using an iron or any other kind of heat).

Time Requirement:  5-10 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Happy Hairdoing!

  7. I just chopped my waist length hair to above my shoulders and donated it to locks of love…but now I have NO IDEA how to style it. Please post more ideas!!!

  8. I’ve been look for ways to do MY hair…not just my daughter’s. Just found your website tonight. So far, I’ve really enjoyed what you do. Just the format I need. I am not familiar with a “heat protectant” and where you would find that type of product…Please send it to me.

  9. I have used this SEVERAL times already, and always get tons of compliments! It’s so much quicker than using a three barrel iron, it’s almost as easy as just straightening!

  11. Cute, I love it! My hair is about the same length but I have never tried the waves with a flat iron. I just use a curling iron normally, but it always makes my hair look about 4 inch shorter than it really is. I’ll have to try this. Thanks for the tip!

  12. So I am a hairstylist and have never seen this style done like this. Brilliant! Love it so much more than the 3 prong iron. Can’t wait to do this on me and my daughter. Thanks!

  13. Yay! I got my bob and immediately tried the new technique. I love it! So much better than ringlets. THANK YOU! (My husband did comment that it looked like an homage to the 80’s–I guess I gave it a little bit of a crimped look–but I explained that it was more free and messy and cute than spiral curls. Also, crimping was a super-tight zig zag, silly man! He doesn’t know much about hair styling. LOL)

  14. Such a cute hairstyle! I love that it is a simple change from a spiral curl with a flat iron. Thanks for sharing the great tips!

  15. Please, tell me what heat protectant is? Do you have a recommendation (or a couple brands, if you can’t just say one)?

I love this style and I’m getting an angled bob tomorrow, so I can’t wait to try this!

  16. What a great and easy look! I’ve been doing hair for a long time, and I’ve never thought to do that with my flat iron. Thanks for all your great ideas!

  17. Adorable! I love the way it looks and I’m definitely trying this for me and my girls ASAP. Flat irons rock!

    Thanks so much!

  18. Cute! and what an awesome technique. I do this with my regular curling iron with similar results, but never thought to try it with the flat iron. Thanks!!

  19. Is this the hairstyle you used on your third daughter in the family introduction? Because I absolutely loved her hair! And yours too, of course!
