Setting aside hairstyles for a minute, this week’s Mom Minute episode for The Mom’s View is about different parenting styles…
I really wish I had all the answers on this one. Shaun and I have been married for over 15 years and we definitely do not feel we have all the answers.
Given that Shaun and I are on the same page in our parenting nearly 99% of the time… there are times that we do not see eye to eye. In fact, right now we differ on views regarding a small concern for one our daughters. This is natural, and part of the give and take of marriage.
When children are involved, and even when they are not, it is important for spouses to resolve differences in a calm manner and to spend more time listening than talking. It is also important not to discuss these things in front of your child.
Regarding our parenting, we try very hard to back each other up when it comes to the kids, because children are much smarter than we give them credit. They will play one of you over the other in order in a heartbeat to get their desired outcome, and that can be a recipe for disaster! Always have each other’s backs.
We have a motto in our home, not just in our marriage, but in how we parent our children in all things. The motto goes that, “It is more important to do right, than to be right.” If parents can remember this in how they parent their children, and how they treat others in all aspects of their lives… the children will learn that by example as well.
Remember, differences of opinion are natural, but it is important to learn how to work through them by finding common ground.
