Spooky Good Hairstyles| Halloween How-To’s

Trick-or-treating might look a little different this year, but the costumes will still be essential. And what’s a good costume without the iconic hairstyle that goes with it? An outfit. Keep reading to learn how to perfect three of my favorite Halloween looks!

Harley Quinn Pigtails

DC Comics bad-girl-you-still-love Harley Quinn has a striking style: One pink pigtail and one blue. The pigtails themselves aren’t too complicated, but you want to have the hair prepped before you add in the temporary color. Start with soft curls and part the hair straight down the middle.

If you don’t have a cape to cover clothes, you can use a good ol’ trash bag or a shirt you don’t mind getting some extra color. Amazon or any Halloween store should have spray cans you can use. As you pull out the sections of hair, cover your hands with paper towels to keep your skin clear.

Pull each side into a high pigtail, leaving a tendril out at the front. Wrap a strand of hair around the base of each pigtail and secure it with a bobby pin, creating the illusion of pink and blue elastics.

Finish off by doing some back-combing to create volume.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 ponytail holders, 2 small bobby pins, pink and blue colored hairspray cans {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 10 minutes

Unicorn Half-Up

Let’s get mythical!

You’re going to start by parting the hair straight down the middle and making two high ponytails. Separate each pigtail into two sections, with the higher section about twice as thick as the lower one. Run some dry wax through the top part and then make a loose braid and secure with an elastic. Go back and fluff the braid out so it has a lot of volume. Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail to make a bun and then secure with bobby pins so it covers the elastic. 

Repeat on the other side. Spray some color in the hair for a fun touch (we went with a majestic white!). And, of course, don’t forget the horn!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bobby pins, small hair elastics, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Halloween Zombie Cheerleader

Zombies might be dead, but the hair for this costume is definitely not lifeless. 

Leave a small section of hair at the back down and pull the rest up. Pull off a one-inch section, take a hairpin and put the hair right in the crook of the pin at the root. The wrap the hair around the pin in a figure-8 motion. Clamp down on the hair and pin with a flat-iron for a few seconds. If you need to secure the hair in the bobby pin, you can use an alligator clip or run a bobby pin right up the middle. 

If you don’t want to use the flat-iron, you can start with damp hair and let it air dry in the pins for really tight curls. 

Repeat with the whole section of hair and do the same with the higher sections of hair, too. Leave the pins in for a little while. When you take them out, you’ll have cool zig-zag curls that are easy to separate and create tons of volume that’s perfect for a zombie or a witch!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, 40-50 hairpins, 40-50 bobby pins or alligator clips, heat protectant, flat iron, hairspray, leaves and grass {optional}.

Time Requirement: 60 minutes

Skill Level: Hard (only because of time)
