How to create a Waterfall Braid (DIY) in 2 Minutes

OK, girls, many of you have expressed that you LOVE our hairstyles, and would like to see some of the more complicated hairstyles done on one’s self.

Perhaps one of the more complex hairstyles is the Waterfall Braid, and so many YouTube viewers have left comments wanting to know how to do this if you do not have anyone to help you with it. Today we wanted to show you how to create a Waterfall Braid on yourself in under two minutes

What I love about this style is that it can be done on short hair (like mine) as well as long (my daughters).

I do this hairstyle on myself all the time. It is very possible to do this braid by yourself, although it may take some practice. Don’t be upset if it doesn’t turn out perfectly the first time… it may take a few tries. I decided to film a tutorial to show you exactly how I handle the stranding as well as the falling pieces in this waterfall braid.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, one hair elastic or 2 bobby pins, hairspray or accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 2-3 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

I plan on posting in the near future more styles like these that you can do on yourself, so keep checking back!  To view the tutorial, simply click below…

Happy Hairdoing!

  1. Hi Mindy, I was wondering if you have any braided bun tutorials? For medium length layered hair that happens to be really thick? My mom has tried several times to do my hair in braids and braided buns, but because my hair is shorter and thicker than it would need to be it doesn’t work as well. I’ve also tried it myself, but the same thing happened. Do you have any suggestions for what I could possibly do with my hair besides things like the water fall braid or headband braids?
    Thanks,
    Evangelise

  2. @Carol and @Shana I have the same bedding except the accent pillows are a little different. I got it at Walmart for $50. I would love to know how you end the braid. Bobby pins? … It would be nice if Mindy replied to the comments…

  3. Mindy,
Thanks so much for posting this video! Do you think you can post more videos on self hairstyles? My mom is terrible at doing my hair! 🙂 It would help a lot!

  4. I love trying new hairstyles on my two daughters! Thanks for the great ideas! I tried the waterfall braid on my ten yr old this morning. It was easy and looked beautiful! Her hair is very fine, though, and the braid came loose the top. Any suggestions on securing it?

  5. This is really cool, but where did you get the bedding in the background. I have been looking for something like that FOREVER! thanks! lol

  6. How do I finish the braid? It looks silly with a ponytail holder on me? Can you post a picture or video of you finishing the braid? Love it!!! Thanks!!

  7. I found this link on pinterest. I’ve never been good at doing my own hair(I’m 32). I watched this video twice and was able to do this! Thank you soo much, now I have a fun new hairstyle for fall.
I think the key for me was making sure that I start the braid off w/ the top most strand.

  8. This is the best tutorial I’ve seen – it finally makes sense about dropping the second piece! And I’m so glad to see it done on short hair like mine! So cute!

  12. Thanks so much for posting all of these adorable hair styles! This is the first one I have tried on my 9 year old daughter and she loved it! Everywhere we went, people told her how cute it was and asked me how I did it! So I liked it on my facebook page so all my friends can see too! Thanks so much again!

  15. this hair style is amazing and even looks pretty on a fifteen year old girl like myself. it took a while to understand at first, but once i got the hang of it, it’s much easier. i have ethnic hair, my mother is Caucasion (white) and my dad is African Amerrican and Italian, so sometimes my hair is too corse to do anything with at all. but this idea works great. [:

  16. Thank you so much!!!! I made it!!! I have been watching so many tutorials but yours is undoubtedly the clearest one!!!! thank you again!!!

  17. i cant find a basic french braid video i have the idea but my little girls hair i so fine and thin it dont tighten i am not sure exactly if i am doing it right

  18. Hi! I’m 24, and I don’t have kids but I do your styles on myself all the time. And I love this one, but I never really know how to end it. Do you think maybe you could post some pictures of the back of your head after you do this, or maybe some ideas how to finish it off?

  19. I was wondering what this hairdo would look like if you did the braid inside out or if it would work at all. I’m only 13 years old and have no sisters so I do my hair on barbies but barbie heads are too small for this hairdo!

  20. Mindy, do you know of some cute hairstyles for teens/tweens for the first day of school? I would love something where the hair is mostly down and that would look cute with a flower to accessorize. It would be awesome if you could post some hairstyles. Thanks!

  21. Great job! Now to see if my hands can do that. It is interesting to see the different ways that different people create their waterfall braids.

  22. It’s so funny that you posted this! The night you posted the video of you demonstrating this hairstyle on your daughter, I practiced on my own hair to see if I could get the hand movements down. It looked great! I’d love to see more things for Moms and daughters, too.
