Mermaid Braid Combo

Paisley has been on a The Little Mermaid kick lately, watching the movie over and over again. Have you ever wondered if you saw a Mermaid, what would her hair look like? Today, Kamri and I give you one of our interpretations using the Half Mermaid Braid we showed you last year, and adding in a Feather Braid accent to make a stunning hairstyle! We are calling it the Mermaid Braid Combo.

Mermaid HairTo see your own photo recreations of this style featured in our app, feel free to tag your photos on IG with: #CGHMermaidBraidCombo

Since we’ve shown you how to make Mermaid Braid before, pay particular attention to how and when we created the Feather Braid Accent. After beginning with a few simple braid stitches, You simply feather off three strands on each side and then bring them back in as you braid down. Then, by pancaking the feathered stands, you are left with this cute circle accent to your Mermaid Braid!

Mermaid Braid Combo

Mermaid Braid ComboWhat I love about this hairstyle is how much creative stranding and hair delineation is going on. It is something you don’t see every day and certain to get you compliments! If you were to add a base of soft curls or waves, this would look even more stunning {although I would add them after you braid}!

Since this is a mermaid hairstyle, Kamri did agree to put on her mermaid tail for these photos! Don’t you think she looks stunning?

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by straightening the hair, to create a nice sleek look as your base…
  2. Comb all hair towards the back of the head, and create a middle part down the center of the head {allowing hair to fall straight down after parting}…
  3. Now, go to each side of the head, and, from the front near the temple, pick up one small strand {all strand pickups will be from the front}…
  4. Then pick up a second independent strand from the left side, giving you now 3 strands of hair {you can use some spray wax, pomade, or water, to help the strand stay uniform and separate from other strands}…
  5. Begin a regular 3-strand braid stitch with the three strands {do not pull the pieces too tight, as you want the braid to drape softly, allowing the strands to curtain naturally – the first stitch should hang right about at the base of the head}…
  6. Before you begin your second stitch, pull in a new thin strand of hair from the front of each side, as you would with a regular French Braid…
  7. Continue to braid down about 3 inches, then stop adding in new strands of hair and continue with a simple three-strand braid for one more stitch…
  8. Now, on the right outside edge of the braid, pull off a small sliver {or feather strand} of hair and leave out of the next stitch…
  9. Then, on the left outside edge of the braid, section off a small sliver {or feather strand} of hair and leave it out of the next stitch…
  10. Repeat Steps #8-9 until you have three total feathered strands on each side of the braid…
  11. Now, complete one regular 3-strand braid stitch without adding or taking anything away…
  12. Then, begin to add back in the pieces of feathers one at a time {add a right piece to the right-most edge, and then stitch in, add a left piece to the left-most edge and then stitch in, etc}, until all of your feathered strands are added back into the braid.
  13. Now gently tug the feathered strands, creating “half” concentric circles on each side of the braid, leaving the braid with a what looks like a mini target in the braid…
  14. Finish off the hair with a normal three strand braid, secure with an elastic, and add hairspray for added hold.
