Our Waterfall Twists into Mermaid Braid did so well back in May 2013, that we decided show you another mermaid braid look today!

Mermaid Half Braid | Hairstyles for Long Hair

This Mermaid Half Braid is a half-up, half-down hairstyle with gorgeous definition in its stranding!

A Mermaid Braid works similar to a Lace Braid, however you are adding strands in on “both” sides of the braid, instead of just one. {You can think of it as an creating an extremely fine stranded, but loose, French Braid.}

You can carry the mermaid stranding all the way down the braid, if you would like, and it will be beautiful! We stopped half way down,  because we loved how it looked. Your braid length is merely a matter of personal preference.

I wouldn’t recommend this style for any girls who will be very “active” throughout the day, such as in PE, dance, or other athletics. This style would be worn more for casual wear, or dressed up. {Trust us, we have tried it during soccer and had to tie it all up in a ponytail!}

Kamri has worn this Mermaid Half Braid a few times over the past several months, and her friends absolutely love it! When she first came home, she told us that a few boy classmates even commented on it, which is a huge shocker coming from boys her age!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray and accessory {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by straightening the hair, to create a nice sleek look as your base…
  2. Comb all hair towards the back of the head, and create a middle part down the center of the head {allowing hair to fall straight down after parting}…
  3. Now, go to each side of the head, and, from the front near the temple, pick up one small strand {all strand pickups will be from the front}…
  4. Pick up a second independent strand from the left side…
  5. You should now have three strands of hair {you can use some spray wax, pomade, or water, to help the strand stay uniform and separate from other strands}…
  6. Begin a regular braid stitch with the three strands…
  7. Do not pull the pieces too tight, as you want the braid to drape softly, allowing the strands to curtain naturally {the first stitch should hang right about at the base of the head}…
  8. Before you begin your second stitch, pull in a new thin strand of hair from the front of each side, as you would with a regular French braid…
  9. Continue to braid down about four inches, then stop adding in new strands of hair and continue with a simple three-strand braid.
  10. Secure with an elastic.
  11. Add any bows or accessory {as desired}.

    RE: CHUBBY BUNNY CHALLENGE VIDEO

    I love that you are playful, silly, and forging a special connection with your beautiful daughters. All that said, I am really concerned about young children viewing this video, and then, playfully stuffing several marshmallows into their mouths, and risking a deadly blockage to their airway. This game, while endearing in many ways, is hazardous, and presents a potentially deadly risk for children watching the video with minimal to no parental supervision. Please consider removing this video. Thank you for your consideration. I have flagged your chubby bunny challenge video for you a tube safety-related review.
