Pull-Through Fishtail Braid Combo

Our hairstyle today is inspired by both a Pull-Through Braid and a Fishtail Braid, beautifully combined into a combo that we first saw from Blohaute on Instagram. Brooklyn fell in love with this hairstyle first, and brought it to me volunteering to be my model! Doesn’t it look great?

You can watch the video tutorial for this braid by clicking below…

This isn’t a complex braided hairstyle, although it really does look that way. We’ve shown you how to create a Pull-Through Braid before, and by now everyone hopefully knows how to Fishtail Braid.

Today we are blending these two braids into a gorgeous combo that we are certain you will love!

You can style this hair dry, like I did here, or wet. Feel free to also use a pomade, gel, or spray wax if you want a slicked-back look that would be perfect for dance or other athletics.

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 5 small hair elastics, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 8-10 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by teasing the crown area of hair, and pulling it back into a poof or pompadour {hair parting for this section should be about 2 inches above the ears}…
  2. Next, secure this section of hair with an elastic and clip forward out of the way…
  3. Then part off another section of hair about 1 inch above the ears,  and secure them together with an elastic…
  4. Now, unclip the 1st ponytail of hair and split it in half, straddling the sections on either side of the 2nd ponytail…
  5. Clip the second ponytail up and out of the way…
  6. Gather another section of hair from the tops of the ears back {grab this hair and combine it with the end strands from the 1st ponytail, and secure with an elastic}…
  7. Let the 2nd ponytail of hair split in half and straddle each side of the 3rd ponytail, and then clip the 3rd ponytail out of the way…
  8. Repeat these steps over and over until you run out of hair {generally 4-5 ponytails}…
  9. On the last section, grab the ends of the ponytail, allowing them split and fall on either side of the 5th ponytail, and secure them underneath with an elastic…
  10. At this point, I go back and pancake the top pull-through braid sections, tugging on the elbows until they are about 2-3 times their original size…
  11. I then take all of the hair at the bottom of the pull-through braid, split it in half, and begin a REVERSE Fishtail {taking hair from the outer strands and crossing them under and into the opposing strand}…
  12. Once you have completely the fishtail go back and pancake the edges to give it a nice puffy look and an seamless integration into the pull-through braid above.
  13. Add hairspray or accessories {if desired}.

hmm. very cute hairstyles; I have relatively long hair and not a clue what to do with it, but you give me much inspiration! However, when you assume that I know how to make a fishtail braid, you are sadly mistaken! And if I don’t know, I’m sure there are others that are also in the dark! PLEASE show me how to make this really awesome braid!
