Red Queen (Queen of Hearts) | Halloween Hairstyles

Remember Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland from 2010? Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of the Red Queen was spot on, and I’ve always wanted to tackle a more realistic movie-inspired hairstyle by the Queen of Hearts!

In preparation, I will show you how to create and use hair padding with a few products that you can find at your local beauty supply store. Hair padding is used to create volume for very intricate hair features, many of which you’ve probably noticed in fashion shows, movies, etc. It’s a fun technique and can really broaden your arsenal of styles once you get the hang of how to use it.

We found this beautiful Queen of Hearts costume/dress, among others, from the amazing Ella Dynae on Etsy. We’ve used dresses from her before, and she’s simply amazing!

When I was trying to match this style with one of my girls, Rylan was immediately who I thought for this tutorial. She dropped in the role perfectly, as you can see from the rolling intro shots of the video tutorial below!  Wow, they grow up so fast!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. {optional} Begin by using a mini crimper to add some volume and texture texture to the hair…
  2. Now part the hair in the middle and then section each side down to the ear…
  3. Go back about 1-2 inches and part down the sides again {you’ll end up with 5 sections {secure the back 3 out of the way for now}…
  4. Now make some hair padding by adding a wad of fake hair into a hair net, and tying the hair net ends together {and shape it into a long thin roll, like a hot dog bun}…
  5. Add any hair accessories {like a Queen of Hearts headpiece, in our case} and then bobby pin the hair padding on each side of the head…
  6. Remove the elastic from your first front section and take it and wrap it up and over the hair padding {this will give you a nice victory roll-like shape in the front, and feel free to use hair wax and a comb to help smooth the top layer to your liking }…
  7. Now remove the elastic from the second section on the same side, right behind the first, and wrap it up and over the hair padding, like you did on the first section…
  8. Use bobby pins to help secure the roll in place, and then clip or pin the remaining hair from the roll temporarily…
  9. Repeat Step #6-9 on the other side of the head…
  10. Now take both temporarily secured rolls and connect the two together with a hair elastic in the back {make sure there’s a small amount of space between the head and the elastic for the next step}…
  11. Then take the remaining hair at the back of the head and lift it upward, smoothing it up and tucking it down into the space between the elastic and head {similar to a Gibson Tuck}, and pin into place…
  12. Smooth any last fly aways with your comb and spray wax, and add a strong hairspray for a complete hold, as desired.

  1. Seems to become a real queen, really cute, I like this style, hair is also very nice. I also seem to be such a shape, it is to do the hair may be more trouble, because I was short hair, but I can pick up the hair so no problem, good looking Halloween, HairTide.com.
