Minnie Mouse Buns | Disney Hairstyles

By now, everyone here knows that my family has an affinity towards Disney!  It has been a complete honor for us to contribute to DisneysStyle on YouTube for the past two years.

Last month, a representative from Disney Parks approached us about participating in its #DisneySide launch in Disneyland. {Be sure to view my family’s personal photos from the Disney Side Worldwide Campaign Launch last week! I included over 40 adorable shots from the wonderful event!}

Minnie Mouse Buns | Disney HairstylesAre you kidding me? How could we turn down an opportunity like that?

One thing they asked us to do as one of their Social Media All-Stars was to produce a video showing our Disney Side.

They then agreed to give me Minnie Mouse Buns, which is the basis for this tutorial!

Minnie Mouse Buns | Hairstyle TutorialThe Disney Parks team asked me if there was anything I needed to film the tutorial, and we decided to go for it and ask if we could film it in Minnie’s house in Toontown, Disneyland!

We about died when they told us they would give us early-park access to film on location! I mean, who ever gets to do that???

Young girl dancing with Minnie Mouse | Hairstyle TutorialWell, this tutorial is the end result!  We must have had over 500 compliments that day as we bounced between Disneyland and California Adventure! Mothers and daughters were constantly stopping us, requesting photos and to ask how we did it.  {Fortunately, we had this tutorial on the DisneyParks YouTube channel as a place to refer them!}

Items Needed:  Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 hairbands, 6-8 bobby pins, hair bow clip, and hairspray.

Time Requirement: 10-12 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by parting the hair down the middle of head…
  2. Create a high ponytail on each side of part line, and secure with an elastic…
  3. Take one of the ponytails and tease it with a comb, to add volume and fullness to the Minnie ear {this is optional, but will make the bun stay more full and in place much better throughout the day}…
  4. Using a smoothing brush, comb only the topmost layer of the teased hair to create a smoothed out look instead of an irregular bumpy look…
  5. Next, pull out a portion of the elastic at the base of the ponytail, and pull the ponytail hair partially through one last time…
  6. You should now have a small fan shaped bun.
  7. Now, spread the fan out until it touches each side of the ponytail base {like a Slinky sitting arched on the table}…
  8. Split the left over hair from the ponytail into two section, and stuff each section of  hair into the tunnel-like hole created by the fanned bun…
  9. Spread the fan out again over the hair  and bobby pin the bases into place {this gives you the Minnie Mouse ear look}…
  10. Add a good holding hairspray {optional}.
  11. Lastly, add a bow at the base of one ear {I prefer to add it to the ear that looks the least perfect}…
  12. Enjoy your Minnie Mouse Buns for a day at a Disney park or Disney-themed party!

Please feel free to leave me a comment below letting us know what you think of the Minnie Mouse Buns!  As always, if you loved this hairstyle, please feel free to share it!

  1. This is my favorite hairstyle not only because I can do it on my curly hair but because it doesn’t take that long. And it looks really cute

  2. Oh My God Mindy and Kamri! This is adorable! My 5 year old sister has super long hair already and she’s having a Minnie Mouse Themed Birthday Party in two weeks… This is PERFECT for her! thank you so so sooo much! 😀
Also really cool that you got to film INSIDE Minnie’s house! xxx

  3. I love this hairstyle! I am definitely going to try it. It is hard for me to control my daughters hair because her hair is past her bottom. But I am definitely going to try this one.

  4. ok….i tried these buns twice now and the hair keeps falling out of the buns. my daughter even called me crying from school because it was crazy hair day and i had already put 12 bobby pins in her hair and had to fix it four times before she left for school. how can i get this style to stay? did you have problems with it? i love your site and have always enjoyed your styles but this one would not stay put to save my life. and instead of Minnie Mouse she ended up looking like Sailor Moon.

  5. as a fan of mindy..this is my favorite! my little girl’s everyday school hairstyle knocks off always! tnx cutegirlshairstyle

  6. After seeing this a couple times at WDW this past week, I tried it out on my daughters’s hair. WOW!!! It was sooo cute and generated quite a few compliments from fellow park goers. THANKS!

  7. I love these so much! My daughter picked out a Minnie dress for her first day back at school and I’m doing the Minnie buns to go with it!! She is very anxious about school and this will really help her first day.

  8. I am going to go to disneyland in a few weeks and
I need to ask if the Minnie Mouse buns stay during all the crazy rides and the wind
also does it hurt your head when you wear them

  9. Question: What product do you use to keep the “fly-aways” away?

Been practicing this on my girls for our Disney World trip in a couple weeks and I can’t get it to look smooth. Thank you for the cute inspirations!

    1. You can use a good pomade, or fiber gum, or a good dry wax, or good old hairspray! For the latter, Got2B’s Freeze Spray has a super great hold. Hope that helps! xoxo

  10. I love, love, love this!! My girls and I love what you do. I am hoping my little Minnie Mouse loving girl will let me try this on her! Thank you for sharing your talent and your beautiful family!

  11. Hi Mindy, l am from Australia. My daughter and l just discovered your site yesterday. As l have had a mild stroke which has left me viision impaired l find it hard to do nice styles on her, but pleased to say l could do the lady gaga bow. Aliea wore it to school today. Cheers, Tracey.

  13. I am going to disney in 5 days my mom is going to do this hairstyle on me and my friend she does a lot of the hairstyles of your website

  14. I wore these Minnie Mouse buns at DisneyWorld. I have never received more compliments in my life. I referred about 50 people to this website. I also did this on my sister so we walked around DisneyWorld looking like Minnies! One thing I would change is that we made bows out of paper (the DisneyWorld Times Guide paper 🙂 and put them in the middle, securing them with 3 bobby pins. Love love love!!!
Love your hairstyles!! I am a huge fan!!
