Perhaps my “most requested” hairstyle ever, has been this Starburst Braid!
We have been asked for it for nearly two years, and we actually filmed a tutorial of it the same day we filmed the Dutch Crown Braid back in Oct 2011.
{My girls and I liked the Crown Braid better that day and decided to upload it instead, because we were not huge fans of the hole on the top of the head like in the Starburst Braid.}
I am not kidding when I say that in the past two weeks or so, I must have been tweeted, facebooked, or emailed versions of this hairstyle a hundred times!
So yesterday, CGH#1 and I decided to re-film the tutorial with our better camera, lighting, and angles… than we used 1.5 years ago. {My friend at Princess Hairstyles has a great tutorial of this braid as well!}
We hope you girls will like this one, and if you do… please feel free to share! If the social media requests are any indication, this style should be a very popular one!
Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 2 small hair elastics, hairspray {if desired}.
Time Requirement: 5-8 minutes
Skill Level: Medium
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Begin by brushing the hair to make sure there are no tangles and the hair is straight…
- Now, separate off {part} a large circular section {Part A} right on the crown of the head, and secure with an elastic {the thinner the elastic, the better, so you don’t end up with a cone-head look}…
- You should also now have should a second section of hair {Part B} about 2 inches wide all the way around the outside of the head…
- For the next step, take the hair in the ponytail and let it fall down over the elastic and drape evenly around the head {this will cause all the hair to hang in your face, which is ok for now}…
- Now, grab a small section of hair in Part B, just behind the left ear and begin a regular French braid. As you add in hair to the top strand, grab a small section from the ponytail and add it in. When adding hair to the bottom strand, pull in hair from the outside/frame section {Part B}. Try to keep the French braid running right around the part line, which essentially helps to hide the part line…
- Continue Step #5 as you work your way around the entire head, in a circle, until your reach the beginning of the French braid…
- Finish off the remaining hair into a Simple Braid, and secure with an elastic…
- Now, take the end of the Simple Braid and tuck it up and under the starburst strands of hair to hide it. Feel free to adjust the braid until it sits well hidden {this creates the illusion that the braid never ends}…
- Finish off by securing the two ends of the Starburst with a few bobby pins.
Enjoy!
Happy Hairdoing!

Hi Mindy! i just discovered your tutorials and fell absolutely IN LOVE! i also noticed that your girls have beautiful hair, and NO fly aways. I was wondering if you maybe had a trick or product that you use to tame them. Thank you!!
hye alesi are u there
is so sweet
I like watching your posts for cute ideas. This braid was super easy and cute to do. I added an extra twist by adding an extra ring of hair. Then doing the waterfall braid with the top bun section and the middle ring of hair then doing the finally ring with the waterfall pieces. The end result was a starburst with a ladder braid crown.
you are amazing some of your stuff looks soo hard but im so glad i found cuz i have learnt so much from u thanks for your help love ya xxx
hyeeeee
Hey Mindy,
I LOVE all your hairstyles.I tried this one and it looked awesome. Thanks for making it simple.I love Brooklyn & Bailey’s channel too.I have full bangs like Bailey used to so its hard for me to do many of your hairstyles. Can you please help me with one for school? Your youngest daughter looks so cute.
love,
Ria 🙂
LOVE THIS! I do it on every one who lets me do their hair. please do a DIY so I can do it on myself.PS. i was wondering how you come up with all these hairstyles, wont you eventually run out of ideas?:)
i dont think she will cuz evryday thers somethink new in her head she is so imangitive xxx
I have tried to do this hairstyle on my own hair but it completely failed. Have any suggestions? After I failed I was thinking that I could have my mom do it for me (on my hair not hers :D) but she doesn’t know how to do a French braid.
P.S. Your daughter is sooo cute!!
awsom i found the micky mouse hairstyle i wont say where it is
Would a hairdresser be able to do this
I have and idea that you could get a twisty clip with a flower on it and twist it into the hole on top of your head.this way you don’t see the hole on top of your head.
i really love it guys………it’s really really amazing… they best hairstyle ever….
Hello Mindy!!!!
You probably don’t know me!! My cousin introduced me to this website, and I have my mom do your hairdos for school!! My sister has 3 feet of hair!!! It is phenominal!! My mom is going to try a hairdo with your starburst crown, and i think the waterfall and add curls!!! We’ll send you a picture of what it looks like and maybe you could do it for a hairdo!!!!
Thanks!!

I loved this hairstyle, I did this on my hair and emailed it to you. I hope you have seen. If you add a little bow or something it will look so cute. And by the way your daughter has beautiful eyes. What grade are you twins?
I did this on my mom and I only did It on three quarters of her head and then I did a loose side braid and it looked really good! Thanks for the video BYE!!!:)
I tried doing this on my sister but it ended up looking
really uneven any suggestions?
Maybe if make the braid tight all the way round it might be more even?
I hope this helps
thanks
Love this hairstyle! I saw it a Pinterest a while ago, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it. (Also, your little daughter is soooo cute!)
is there any way instead of the poof you could make a pony tail or bun on the outside?
I am always doing fun thing with my daughters hair but I have never gotten more comments from random people then I do when I do this Starburst Braid in their hair. We love it so much. Looks amazing!
Also, I was wondering if it was possible to use ribbon throughout this braid? My five year old has a Mexican Themed Birthday party to go to tomorrow and I think this braid would be great with Mexican colored ribbon intertwined through the braid. What do you think?
I think so! It could look very cute!
It’s among some of the wonderful hairstyles that is favorite choice of many.
Very sophisticated presentation from every side.
Love this! I’ve been looking for a solid tutorial of it forever! Can you do it with a Dutch braid too/instead?
I love the song you play at the beginning of most of your latest videos can you tell me the name of it so i can get it i absolutely love that song i even sing it when i watch your videos at the beginning.
Looking so beautiful and awesome.I like this post so much. You have done a great effort.

I was wondering if you could do a tutorial for haristyles from oz the great and powerful like the one mila kuniz is wearing when she first finds oz
This looks Stunning Mindy..You are awesome 🙂
Brilliant. I’m going to have to try it on my daughter who’s eight and loves what it looks like.
You are in first place for the top 25 blogs! Congrats!
I love this hairstyle!!! What is the name of the song you play at the very beginning and end of the tutorial?
It is called “Icing” by Charity Vance… we put a link in the video description box for our tutorials on YouTube. You can also search for her on iTunes. Thanks!
i love this hairstyles.. it was one of the first i ever made on my sisters hair (with the tutorial of hair4myprincess) and now seeing the hairstyle again it makes me realise i should do this more often!! thank you so much for uploading this hairstyle
it looks awesome! I hope you win the top 25 mom blogs! I’v been voting!
I do a similar look on my 5 year old. We use feather or flower clips to hide the beginning/end. she has very fine hair.
This turned out so great, and thank you for the mention! I hate that YouTube is hiding my subscriptions.. I didn’t see this one until just now, a few days later. Btw, I’ve been voting for you whenever I remember. Good luck with that!
Thanks so much! Yeah, we let YouTube know that as content creators… burying our upload feeds caused us all to lose views! They are aware! Thanks for the comments!
I have a question for you! I am 15 and am getting really into doing hairstyles! I love being able to have beautiful hair everyday! How long did it take you to perfect your braiding skills?
just wondering how u made the parting? for me, making the parting was harder than making the actual plait! did u just ‘draw’ a circle on the head with a rat tail comb or did you spread the hair around her head and THEN make the parting? sorry if I’m being dumb… thanks xx
I just grabbed a section of hair at the crown, and used a rat-tail comb to help trace a good circle around the crown… letting the comb trace out of the ponytail any hair that should be outside the circle. Does that make sense? Thanks for your comment!
I absolutely love this style, I did something silimar in my daughter’s hair this morning, but instead of starting behind the ear and going all the way around her head, I did the circle in the middle, and started the braid in the front middle, and did two seperate braids that connected together at the back of her head and continued into a basic braid, it turned out really nice 😀
Hi, This is a gorgeous hair style but i think it’s more proper for an adult. I don’t know but I think it makes a girl look older.
Very cute! I was wondering if you could do some tutorials on how your daughter does her makeup
Mindy this is amazing. I’m so excited that you were nominated I will vote for you! Also can you do hairstyles for a first communion, I really need ideas( for short hair and long hair).
Thank you Mindy,I can’t wait to see what you do next!
I love Sweet Pea she is so cute. This braid is really cool. Although i like the crown braid without the ponytail better. The hairstyles is really cute. Do you have any really good hairstyles for softball? Really like your hairstyles. Hope to see you someday.
I was thinking it would be cute if you somehow did the braid all the way around, but then had a ponytail where the hole would be.
It looks so easy! I vote for you everyday in the wedsite. I check today the wedsite and you are #1. 🙂
really cool!:)
Could you pretty please do a DIY version of this hairstyle???
can u do this on yourself???
Yes, you can…
Can you do a DIY tutorial please!!love your tutorials! Kiss from Canada
Looks like your girls have that natural blush, I get that too. Everyone always asks me why my cheeks are so red! Keep up the good work!
Thank you, Cara!
Your cheeks only get red if u r thinking about ur crush.do u have 1
Jk that happens to me all the time…not the part about the crush
can you PLEASE make some videos on your kids (cgh#1/#2 or even #3) doing some hairstyles on your hair… or even on each others!
Thnx
L 🙂
ps… i love the clip at the end with sweetpea dancing, SOOOOO cute!
x bye
keep on styling mindy xxx
Looks amazing, will have to try it. Love Sweet Pea she is so cute!!
really very nice work …
thank u …
i will try it with my sweety girl
This is just too cute! I love it!
loved the hairstyle!! i found the extra clip so cute…the video of your baby girl……i think she’s gonna take your job Mindy LOL! really cute 🙂
Yeah, you can tell she has been listening to us! She is such a sweetie!
I have an idea to make this hairdo even cooler. You part the ponytail the same, but then make a bun like yours in the video with evilinacutza. Leave the ends hanging and then braid the French braid the same. You will have a beautiful sock bun with a braid going around the head!
That is a fab idea!
Love this updo, looks stunning and it really isn’t as difficult as it looks.
