Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

October 21, 2012

The hairstyle for this week is sure to be a popular one, since so many women are reluctant to use too much heat in their hair. The golden question with using no heat is… how do you obtain gorgeous curls without it???

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

First, I want to give a huge shout-out to Intermountain Moms on Facebook! They have a program similar to Dial-a-Nurse, only they use pure social media to help us moms!

Nurse Dani at IntermountainMoms was able to help me this last week know when we should take CGH#1 to the doctor after she fractured her wrist during gymnastics… she saved me approx $150 for an x-ray that would have been too early to tell! {It is fractured, BTW. *sad*} They also have daily giveaways there, so be sure to enter! {My friend won a 1-month supply of diapers in August!}

Well, we have already shown you how to create No-Heat Headband Curls, and we have shown you how to make No-Heat Sock Curls.

How about another cute no-heat curling technique???

This version uses a technique we call Cocooning, yes, cocooning as in a caterpillar turning into a butterfly!

Since it uses a knot to, they style only provides curl on the bottom 2/3 of the hair, so I find that a headband or hat is the perfect accessory for this hairstyle! {You might also pull the hair up into a hair-wrapped ponytail, which will wonderfully show off those gorgeous curls!}

These cocoon curls also last for a few days, so you can combine these curls as a 2nd or 3rd day ‘do using any of our accent braids, twists, etc!

Rather than try an explain the steps here, it is better for you to watch the video tutorial below… it will be much easier to follow that way…

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bandana, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 15-20 minutes

Skill Level: Hard

Happy Hairdoing!

Pin Coil {Curl} Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

August 27, 2012

We wanted to teach you a fun way to accent any number to hairstyles, and can accent a style for any number of occasions.

Pin Curl Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

You can use pin coils to accent a simple hairdo, add variety to a basic messy bun, dress up a formal occasion, or even just match a cute outfit!   In the video below, I used the pin coils to accent basic beachy waves and also to accent a simply messy bun.  Either way looks great!

I’ve also had fans comment that you can use the coils to cover ponytail holders on a basic ponytail, create a headband, or create amazing day-2 waves in your hair.

Many of you may remember your mother or grandmother making overnight “pin curls” using this same method to created beautiful next-day curls.  That is where I got this accent idea!

Pin Curl Accents | Easy Hairstyle Ideas

You may also use these accents as a very fun way to dress up an updo for Prom or Homecoming, since these pin coils are easy to form and look very much like rosettes!

Your possibilities really are endless!  Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, 3-4 small bobby, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 3-5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by determining where you want your cluster of Pin Curls…
  2. Then, grab a 1-inch section of hair and twist it around your 2nd and 3rd fingers to create a coil shape…
  3. Gently slide the coil of hair off of your fingers and lay it flat against your head…
  4. Take a bobby pin and secure the coil against your head.  {Do your best to hide the bobby pin.  See note below…}
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you form your desired, cute cluster of coils.  I created three coils in this video, but you can do four, five, or even a whole headband of coils.
  6. Get creative… and enjoy!

* Note from Mindy:  To make the bobby pins less noticeable, try using the mini bobby pins that match the color of your hair.  {In this tutorial, I used large “blonde” pins so you could see what I was doing.} You can also “weave” the bobby pins through the coil in an up and down manner to help hide them.  Using decorative bobby pins with little jewels can also add a little flair.

Happy Hairdoing!

Sock Curls | No-Heat Curls Hairstyles

January 18, 2012

By popular request, and because no-heat hairstyle ideas are very popular right now… we decided to share one of the curling techniques my grandma used on me when I was little.

No-Heat Hairstyles | Sock Curls

This hairstyle curling tip uses a little bit of water and socks! Yes, mens socks {clean ones, of course} to curl hair!

Now, like we did in the Headband Curls, you want to start with dry hair. Then gently spritz the hair with a water spray bottle. You will want the hair to be slightly damp, but not wet.

{If you do this directly out of the shower, your curls will likely not hold when you take out the socks.  It is important that you start out with dry hair.}

I also decided to try a little bit of curl enhancer {my first time using it} that I rubbed into the ends of the hair, to see how it works.

I then grabbed a section of hair from the top of the head and rolled the hair around the sock until I reached close to the scalp and then tied the sock. I did the same for the back-lower hair, as well as one each on the sides of the head. That makes a total of 4 tied socks.

If you are worried about the socks becoming loose or untying, you can sleep with a silk scarf over the hair.

After a good night’s sleep, you are ready to take out the socks. You will be amazed at how easy this hairstyle is, and how wonderful your curls will look after using only socks!

I guarantee you will get compliments on your curls, and when you tell everyone you used “socks” to get them… just watch their faces!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, water bottle, curl enhancer, 4 mens socks, hairspray and accessory {as desired}

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Easy

Happy Hairdoing!

Headband Curls | No-Heat Hairstyles

December 12, 2011

I do use heat on my hair from time to time, and also on a few hairstyles with my girls, but always make an effort to use a good heat protectant.

There are, however, hairstyles where you can get gorgeous curls without the use of heat. These no-heat hairstyles have been used for years in the form of pin curls, rag curls, foam rollers, sock buns, etc.

Here is a curling method you may not have heard about, for low curls only using a simple headband. How neat is that?

No-Heat Hairstyles | Headband Curls

To begin, simply place a thin cotton headband on the forehead but over the back of the hair. Then spritz the hair with the water bottle so that the hair is slightly damp, gently finger-combing the water through the hair. {If the hair is too wet, then it will not hold the curls.} Proceed next by separating out small sections of hair to be wound tightly around the headband, until you reach the back of the head

Do the same on the other side and combine the remaining hair into one central strand that you wind through the headband until there is no hair remaining. {You can use a Topsy Tail on this step to make things much easier… I thought of that after we filmed the hairstyle!}

If you have a really cute headband, the hair at this stage can actually be a fun hairstyle for that day. It almost has a Greek Goddess look to it.

The key is to sleep on this hairstyle overnight until you are ready to take it out. You may choose to wear a silk scarf over the hair to keep it from falling out while you sleep.

No-Heat Hairstyles | Headband Curls

The next morning, gently unwind the strands of hair from the headband. You should end up with large, voluminous curls in the lower sections of the strands, and you can style the hair as you wish in all sorts of combinations. We made this a half-up/half-down hairstyle by forming an upper ponytail with some of the hair, and then gently bobby pinning the curls back into the ponytail holder.

Again, this is a fun hairstyle for girls of all ages. It is so easy to do and you never have to touch a curling iron! Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, water bottle, 1 thin cotton/soft headband, 1 ponytail holder, 2-3 bobby pins, hairspray.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes (night before), 2 minutes (morning after)

Skill Level: Easy

Happy Hairdoing!
