Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

The hairstyle for this week is sure to be a popular one, since so many women are reluctant to use too much heat in their hair. The golden question with using no heat is… how do you obtain gorgeous curls without it???

Cocoon Curls | No-Heat Curl Hairstyles

First, I want to give a huge shout-out to Intermountain Moms on Facebook! They have a program similar to Dial-a-Nurse, only they use pure social media to help us moms!

Nurse Dani at IntermountainMoms was able to help me this last week know when we should take CGH#1 to the doctor after she fractured her wrist during gymnastics… she saved me approx $150 for an x-ray that would have been too early to tell! {It is fractured, BTW. *sad*} They also have daily giveaways there, so be sure to enter! {My friend won a 1-month supply of diapers in August!}

Well, we have already shown you how to create No-Heat Headband Curls, and we have shown you how to make No-Heat Sock Curls.

How about another cute no-heat curling technique???

This version uses a technique we call Cocooning, yes, cocooning as in a caterpillar turning into a butterfly!

Since it uses a knot to, they style only provides curl on the bottom 2/3 of the hair, so I find that a headband or hat is the perfect accessory for this hairstyle! {You might also pull the hair up into a hair-wrapped ponytail, which will wonderfully show off those gorgeous curls!}

These cocoon curls also last for a few days, so you can combine these curls as a 2nd or 3rd day ‘do using any of our accent braids, twists, etc!

Rather than try an explain the steps here, it is better for you to watch the video tutorial below… it will be much easier to follow that way…

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, bandana, hairspray {if desired}.

  5. mine keep falling out! idk what to do i tried sleeping in buns last night and they made my hair ugly and frizzy! please help! my hair is thick and blonde but it might be too short (shoulder length) D:

  6. Works well for me, but gives me waves more than curls, but maybe it’s ’cause I use bigger ones than Mindy did and my hair isn’t the best for holding things as it’s quite frizzy

  7. I attempted to do these with my daughters hair, but even when her hair was damp, they would not stay because her hair is mostly straight and very soft. Any recommendations on counteracting the silky smooth to get the cocoons to hold?

  8. Hiii i love all your tutorials.they are much fun and easy.i did my coocoon curls and kept them till morning.and when i woke up they were just

    SUPER DOOPER COOL

  9. Tried these tonight when I came out of the shower, took me a while to get some of the ones at the bottom to stay in. Hopefully it will be worth it it the morning! Thanks Mindy xx

  13. Hi! I adore your tutorials! I am considering cutting my hair into a short bob, if you can, would you send me all the hairstyles you can do for short hair? or put them in a category? and can you do these and/or sock curls on a short a-line bob?
    Thanks! Niki

  14. The twins are 12 and in 7th grade, right? I’m their age!!! Thirteen in 42 days and counting, haha xx I tried this hairstyle and it worked SO WELL! I have really long hair, so curlers take forever!

  15. hey my daughter is a huge fan she wears almost all of your hair tutorials and i would love to tell my daughter to do it on herself she is way better than me she also loves your daughters eyes they are so pretty she is also in your 3 daughter grade she is in 4th

  16. Hey Guys! I’m Kelly and I love this site! For some of you who were asking questions, I can answer them for you:

    Olivia- Maybe your hair is silky and straight and may need some spray or water to hold it in place

    Lex- If you tie two curly buns on either side of your head, then sleep in it, it will create really nice defined curls! 🙂

    JAVERIA- Hey! You should take a small section from either side of your head and pin them in the centre, then take larger sections, twist them round and make them meet in the centre with a pin. Put a flower clip there to hide the pins and leave a few strands loose.

    Mandy- Wet your hair but not too much. You may also want to use some hair cream or spray to make the hair slightly stickier.

    presleigh- Hi! A good idea would be to do an elegant french twist with a flower on the top

    Esther- Put some kind of product in to make it stickier or you can back-comb your hair to make it less fine and a bit easier to work with. Don’t back comb it too much because it will look like a mess, just fluff it up a bit! These curls will look great on blond hair!

    anna- This would look super cute on short hair but will be extremely hard! If your hair is like a bob, it probably wont work. If it comes below your ears, you can try but the sock curls may work better for you- search for them on the blog. Another alternative is to tie two or more buns at either side of your head and sleep on it! The more buns you tie, the smaller the curls.

    Hope I Helped you all! And thanks Mindy!

    1. Hey Kelly
      I have tried these curls four or five times and they just wouldn’t work! I spent almost an hour trying to re- knot all the constantly falling out ones! I’m serious, as soon as I got one up, another would come down. My hair is long, dead straight, fine and blonde, so a change to curly is really fun, yet it takes hours using heat, the heat doesn’t do any justice and doesn’t last for very long at all! So thank you so much for your suggestions, I’ll give them a try 🙂 will any sort of hairspray work? Do you think mousse would, too? What if I went without using conditioner when I wash my hair before I do them? Thanks for your help, I thought I was the only one with these problems!

  17. I think that it would be cute if you did a simple braid in the back, then the flat part on the head would not show up as much.

  18. well thanks for uploading this video i think that is is so cute i love it but one question can you do this on short hair???

    1. me too well this isnt mindy but i use pin-curls you should try it i think i might post a video on youtube ow to do it and a hairstyle with the curls hope it helps

  19. Thank you so much for posting this! At first when I did this it fell out, but when I put water on my hair it stayed! Thanks again!

  20. I’ve been using this one on myself for months! It gives amazing results, except I do not twist it at the begining, and my curls come out differently but they are still beautiful.

  21. hey mindy!
    im in a show at our community theater. theshow is in the WWII era. i really need a hairstyle for it i thought these curls would be great but i need something for the top any suggestions????????

  22. I have trouble with them coming undone on my daughter too, so we started doing tight twists (two pieces of hair twisting each piece to the right and twisting them together to the left) with rubber ponies at the bottom. Same type of curl in the morning.

  23. mindy this is wow!
    i need a very simple hair up do in coming 3 to 4 day but some thing special . i hop u can give me a good idea of a very simple hair bun
    {lots of love}
