Flat-Iron Curls | Easy Curl Ideas

Here is a very quick and easy way to make hair look elegant in the mornings when the hair is kind of in that “blah” stage. It is very simple to do and all you need is a skinny flat iron to do it.

Time Requirement: 2-3 minutes

Skill Level:  Easy

I have found that it is too difficult and time consuming at times to run both a flat iron to straighten the hair (to stage curls) and then a curling iron or 3-barrel right after. Did you know that you can use a flat iron to do both??? Yes, a flat iron can curl and you do not have to straighten the hair to do it!!! Here is how…

What I love about this tip is that these simple curls can be added to many hairdo’s and haircut styles! You can combine them with twists or buns on the top, or a French Braid in the bangs, etc, (I used the two Topsy flip-unders on my DD in the video) . You will notice that the elegant curls add volume to the hair when I simply do not have time to straighten or curl all of it. Let me know if you thought this was useful…

Step-By-Step Instructions:

  1. Apply your favorite heat protectant to hair.
  2. Using a 1″ flat iron, pick up a small piece of hair.
  3. Start close to the head by applying the iron on the hair lightly, twisting the flat iron and pulling downward.  (see technique in video)
  4. Smaller sections and more twisting will give a tighter curl.  Larger sections and less twisting will give a bigger curl or soft wave.
  5. I twisted away from the face on each side until reaching the back.
  6. Lightly brush through the curls with your fingers.
  7. Spritz with hairspray if desired!

Nice and easy!

  2. It won’t work!! I tryed it like 100 times and it still didn’t work! I did it exactly the way you did it and I also tryed like a hundred other ways too!!!!!! Please help!

  3. I love your hairstyles so much! I am a 13 girl and I love to do hairstyles on myself. Do you think you could do some more quick, self-do hairstyles? Thank you so much for inspiring me and many more people!

  4. I love you hairstyles and I do them on my sister every day. I found out about your website form my study hall teacher. I am so into braids and updo’s and knots and all the other fun stuff. Simply I LOVE your website… Hope to see new videos soon.

(P.S. Can you do a video on how to keep your hair straight after straightening it with a flat iron)

  5. I LOVE YOUR WEBSITE!!! I have learned so many fun hairstyles and have tried them on my self and have they have all worked! Keep on doing what you are doing cause your GREAT at it!

  6. How hard it this to do on your own hair? Can you get the back just fine, or would I have to have someone else do it for me?

  7. I have done hair for almost 17 years and am also a licensed Cosmetology teacher. You are very creative with your hair styles. Someone asked a question about flat irons. After using all different brands, I believe that the ghd is the best. Of course, it is also one of the most expensive. They retail for over $200. I would only buy one of these through a licensed professional because they do have knock-offs on line. They also have a 2 year warranty. The CHI is good for the money. I wouldn’t use anything less than that if you are going to use it on a regular basis. The old saying is true, “you get what you pay for.” Love the videos and hairstyles. You come up with things I have never seen before.

  8. I love your blog. My hair is naturally dead straight and I was woundering if you could show how to do really subtle curls like Quinn from Glee.

  9. Thank you! My hair is super straight & really thin PLUS hates to keep curls. I had used my mom’s 1/2″ curling iron, but that took me hours to curl (4 hours for the first time). Now that i know how to do curls with a flat iron, i think i’m going to use my money on a good brand flat iron instead of wasting it on a curling iron. Now the question is what brand & what store?

  10. Well from what I can see your pretty good at doing hair on your daghter i think you should become a hair stylist because I’ve watched all of your videos and I’m impressed.

  11. I love your blog….found this video on you tube. Had no idea how to do this. Can’t wait to try it on my daughters hair. Spent a ton of time looking at your other videos and your website. I think I can make my daughters hair look a heck of a lot cuter. Thank you 🙂

  12. What flat iron do you like to use? I have 3 girls and wanted to try curling their hair with a flat iron. Your blog is so cute! You have such darling hair ideas.

    Thanks!
