Wrap-Around Prim Braid | Catching Fire | Hunger Games Hairstyles

It looks like Lionsgate has been releasing sporadic photo stills from the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire!

The one that I am most interested in shows Prim embracing Katniss right after her sister returns home from the games.

Wrap-Around Prim Braid | Catching Fire | Hunger Games HairstylesWhat I love about this photo is that it symbolizes Katniss’ promise to her younger sister that she would return to her, a promise that she kept.

The released photo shows a good side shot of a super-cute braid that Prim is wearing! The hairstyle looks like a variation of the Katniss braid, but leaving some hair down in the back. {The movie still is credited here.}

Taking a quick look at the photo, my girls and I deducted that it is a winding braid, using a lace braid technique along the partline and forehead. Then, right about the right temple, the braid turns into a Dutch braid until just behind the right ear, then back into a lace braid diagonally around the back {allowing for hair down}. The braid is then finished into a simple braid that can be worn down in the back or over the shoulder.

For another super-cute look, you could continue the diagonal braid as a Dutch braid instead of a lace braid… giving your a beautiful variation of the Katniss braid from the original movie and Catching Fire!

Get practiced up on this hairstyle, because I feel it will be one that millions of young girls will wear to see Catching Fire when it releases in November, 2013!!!  I know Brooklyn and Bailey are anxious to see it!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, curling wand, 1 small hair elastic, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes without texture, 10-12 minutes with curls added.

Skill Level: Hard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. {Optional} You can use a TopStyler to add curls previous to braiding, which is what the Hunger Games hairstyle team uses, but I used a NuMe curling wand to add texture to the hair.
  2. Begin by creating a deep side part on the left side of the head…
  3. Pick up a small section of hair at the back left of that part, closest to the crown. Separate that section in to three smaller strands, and begin a Dutch Lace Braid.
  4. Creating a lace braid, you add in hair only on the side of the braid closest to the part line.  Continue directing the Lace Braid towards the face…
  5. As you get to within about an inch of the hair line, begin to curve the braid slightly to create a soft arc shape…
  6. As you complete the arc, just above the right temple, you will need to begin adding hair into both sides of the braid by using a few stitches of a regular Dutch braid.  This is because you will also want to incorporate the bottom hair so that it isn’t in the face…
  7. Continue the Dutch braid till you get to right above the ear…
  8. angle using the Dutch lace braid technique seen in the video.Once you reach directly above the right ear, you will want to switch back to forming a Lace Braid.  {You will only be adding hair into the top side of the braid nearer to the top of the head.}  Remember that Prim has long hair remaining below the braid that flows down her back.  Using a lace braid for the diagonal braid in the back will allow the bottom hair to remain, like a half-up/half-down hairstyle, just as in the photo.  From the top of the right ear to the bottom of the left ear, you will want to create a 45 degree angle using the Dutch lace braid technique seen in the video.
  9. When you get to the bottom of the left ear, make sure you tug the hair into the braid a little tighter, in that last stitch, to keep the hair from hanging awkwardly over the ear.
  10. Once you have gathered up all the hair into the Lace Braid, finish it off using a simple braid, and secure with a hair elastic.
  11. Spritz with hairspray, if desired.

Here is the video tutorial… enjoy!

Happy Hairdoing!

  12. I really love this one! My friend tries to do it on me in school and the teacher really doesn’t care as long as we don’t talk 🙂

PS when is cgh3 getting her own channel also does she have crush on someone or a boyfriend?! Bye!!! (happy)

  15. This hairstyle is so cute! My friend did this braid on me, but instead of leaving the rest of the hair down, she started another Dutch braid right under it, and it was amazing. It would be cool if someone did the same thing, but feathered the first one so that it would have a cool ladder effect!

  16. Mindy,
I want to start with a compliment. I have been following your blog for a couple of years and I love your ideas, you are great at explaining things. But I have been very disappointed in some of your posts lately. I know you understand social media. That once you post something anyone can view it. So I am surprised that you have encouraged and allowed your daughters to talk about personal experiences that make fun of kids at school or teachers. The boy in her class could easily find out that she said he wasn’t cute and the teacher she made fun of that was at kid history could hear about this. It is uncomfortable to listen to and makes you and your daughters sound conceited and unkind. I hope you consider dropping the social commentary and stick to hair.

    1. I respect your opinion, but they weren’t trying to be mean and their daughters don’t sound conceited or unkind. They were simply just trying to tell a little story which wasn’t intended to hurt anyone. If the boy or teacher did find it, it’s not like it would be your problem. You should let them be how they want to be on their own blog. Once again, I respect your opinion and don’t mean to be rude.

    2. I Don’t mean to be rude or anything…and I respect your opinion, but they were not being conceited or unkind. They were simply sharing a funny story that happened to them while Mindy was braiding so us viewers did not get bored of watching Mindy braid for a few minutes. And you never know, maybe that boy wasn’t cute. Being a teenager as well, I think that I would trust Brooklyn’s opinion.

  17. Mindy could you do a video of how to do the archivo of the braid oneself? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. This is so cute I will have to try it on my sister’s hair, or my hair. Thanks for sharing your amazing hairstyles. 🙂

  19. Hi Mindy! Just found your sight and love the tutorial!

Have you seen the trailer yet? I’d love to see a tutorial of the hairstyle Katniss wears to the end of victory tour party in the Capitol.

  20. By the way, there’s tons of cool braids in the teaser trailer! The one she wears to the capitol party, with the braids on top of her head, is also really beautiful!

  21. Thank you so much for posting this tutorial!! I have been wanting to try this braid since I saw the picture, and I’ve been trying to figure out exactly how it was done. So CUTE!

  22. Hi I’m a great fan of your lovely braids. Every time i see a new braid i try it on my daughters hair. So i do this one and it looks so beautiful to her!! I’m from Holland and í’m so happy with your website. My daughters looks always nice and beautiful with there hair!!

  25. Hi Mindy! I’ve loved your tutorials for years now!

Have you ever seen this full snake braid before?

It looks something like this. I work in Europe, and have friends in Poland, and I’ve seen so many women/girls with this hairstyle. Apparently, it’s super common. CCould you also do a tutorial on it, or do you already have one? It’s gorgeous and seems to be pretty similar to the Prim braid! 🙂
Thanks and have a wonderful day!

    1. That’s a really cute hairstyle! I think Mindy has one somewhat similar called the Dutch Flower Braid in the Updo section. Hope that helps 😉

  26. Great hairstyle and directions – thanks so much! I’m hoping my big girl will let me try – my middle girl just convinced me to cut off 6 inches;-( Her shoulder length hair will probably still be too short by November – but maybe this style to convince her to let it grow again!

  27. Mindy, this is awesome! So cute but easy! Please do more Hunger Games/ Catching Fire hairstyles! Brooklyn and Bailey should do Hunger Games Trilogy or Legend Trilogy book reviews next month! 🙂 you guys are awesome!
